Title: Gun license renewal
Post by: lino6 on October 19, 2014, 05:20:57 PM
Just got my renewal notice in the mail last week so going through the process now. Usually I would just get an EOI for hunting pest animals on crown land as my genuine reason. Just wondering though, does anyone know what the minimum land size you need to own to be able to put down hunting on your own land? With the foxes and rabbits running around our place I think its a genuine reason, but if the minimum size is xx hectares then I will just stick with the crown land permit.

In relation to property size to determine a genuine reason for hunting, the minimum is 5 acres

States it at the bottom of page.

You will have to justify why you want a centre fire (ie to shoot injured cattle etc) as they will  only give a rim fire, so I read.

Thanks for that.

I have a 410 shotgun for the foxes and rabbits and an air rifle for the smaller rodents. Should be right I reckon.

If it starts to head south I'll get another hunting on crown land permit from DEPI if need be.

You might as well go for A&B. That way if for any reason you find a centre fire in your hand, you are covered

Yeah mate I have an A&B licence, that I am renewing.

Just reading through some info, it appears that if you don't have the genuine reason as target shooting (with a club membership) you are not allowed to shoot clay targets on private property, only on approved ranges? Seems strange to a simple bloke like me...

I'll buy you some clay pots for Xmas filled with geraniums. They deserve to be shot!

That will be you can't get a license because you just want to shoot clays on your own land, you must be in a club?

That's what I had been doing Swannie, just thought our 8 acres might be big enough to hunt on. Last time I just went into their Benalla office and got one over the counter.

Wonder can you have more than 1 genuine reason?

I think you can, jump onto vic police, download a firearms form and have a look at the options

I think if you going the SSAA you hunt on their land and this should suffice for a genuine reason.

I got that paperwork that says what the reasons are and it say you have to provide 1. Think I'll just send off with the rates notice and see what I get back.

If it's only a renewal and nothing has changed ( NSW) you don't have to fill out genuine reason as it's already on there.

Same as Vic, but you still need to provide evidence of that genuine reason, like a rates notice, or club membership etc.

Has anyone ever got an unregistered firearm registered? Is it a hard process?

Has anyone ever got an unregistered firearm registered? Is it a hard process?

I would wait for an amnesty then do the paperwork.

Vic police extract....

Want to possess a firearm that has not previously been registered?

Ask a police station or licensed firearm dealer to store it for you in the interim.
Ensure your licence allows you to own that category of firearm.
Apply to LRD for a Permit to Acquire and then pay the associated fee.
Take the Permit to Acquire and firearm to a dealership so the dealer can transfer ownership of the firearm and arrange for the firearm to be registered as yours.

In NSW just take to your local gunshop they take all details and send to the registry, gun is yours next day. The trick is to have your PTA already in your hand.

I ended up going in to the DEPI and getting a crown land permit. Figured that's what I've done in the past and seems to work!

Will head in to the local gun shop and ask them about registering unregistered guns.

  for the info guys!

In Qld you have to at least 44 acres to shoot a longarm on your own land, I allways submit 2 genuine reasons, one sporting so I can shoot at ranges and one land owners letter so I can hunt. Up here if you only provide one of them that's the only endorsement they put on your licence and you can't do the other. Of course for my pistols  it's only sports target shooting at an approved range.

^^^^^ I would get a pistol but the laws are crap. Being forced to be a member of a club, supervised for 6 months and attend so many times per year.
