So many talented people are on here and we should have a separate section for the ingenuity some members have come up with.
We could nearly have a dedicated area for this. Mods let me know what you think.

The Touareg's well for the spare will only hold a deflated space saver so if you want to carry a full time spare you need another way. This uses an old 50mm square hitch welded to a bit of square tube & plate. It needs to drop (via a 2 pin connection) to allow the rear hatch to open.
Inventions don't need to be complicated.
And I could still tow the Jayco with it.
If anybody is interested, PM me for more photos/details.

Great idea , but is it legal welding onto a tow hitch like that? How much does it move around while your driving? I don't know about wall thickness , but it looks like 50x50 RHS. If it was me I would have some gussets and something under the wheel to take the weight instead of just the studs/bolts or whatever is holding it now. Insurance might be another problem if it decided to part company with your tug. I hope I'm wrong because I do like the idea for the camper. ???

Not my invention, but I do think the MYSWAG forum is a good invention.
How else would we share and pinch each others ideas.

The tow hitch was off a Patrol and longer than the VW one. The VW will accept 350kg ball weight and the wheel plus Jayco weighs less than that. There was a little free play, which couldn't be avoided to allow the hitch to swing. I think there is only about 1-2cm sideways movement at the top of the wheel. Dad (the inventor) used to make mobile crane jibs from scratch, so I trust his expertise when it comes to how strong to make it.

Please take this the way it is intended. There is a set of rules for lifting and there is another for carrying. Mobile cranes are designed for loading/unloading trucks etc. so I don't doubt Dads spare holder would be strong enough to support the spare for years. Once you put carrying into the mix , the rules change. You have a wheel about 15-20kg hanging off a piece of steel about 300mm long , so that's where the flex comes into it. I might be wrong but I don't think a mobile crane can travel with a load, so flex doesn't come into it.Before you ask, yes,I have worked with steel. I don't care if I'm right or wrong , just make sure your butt is covered insurance wise.

No, I didn't take it the wrong way, and I don't want to sound overly defensive. I have no idea at all about welding. I mentioned Dad's experience as he was a fitter & turner by trade and has built things that lift many tonnes. Crane jibs are a couple of orders of magnitude above this piece. You see a lot of similar carriers on the web, both DIY and commercial designs and this one is at the heavier end of the spectrum. I reckon my alloy wheel is not much heavier than three or four bicycles and your standard 4-bike carrier is quite a bit lighter and wobblier that this wheel carrier. Also, the carrier wasn't for everyday use but it was only ever put on for trips. It'a all academic now as I no longer have the Touareg. Thanks for your valid concern; we all need to look out for each other.

Fridge slide for a 100 series cruiser.
For a 40 L engel buy some 12mm ply and cut to just a bit larger than the 40L engel. Go to a Big W or K mart and buy 2 skate boards with the wide wheels. I paid around $12 each.
Remove the wheels and rebolt them to the ply equal distant width and in line. The bolts fit perfectly.
Fridge slides real easily across the carpet and either set of wheels just drops into the small gap when the tail gate is down. Fridge then sits on the tail gate for easy access. All up cost about $30.

A piece of blue tack on the side of the thermostat knob on the Engel to hold it set, a little bump soon turns everything soft into iceblocks

Mine is just a 10 watt solar panel plugged into the charge socket of a cheap jump pack from super cheap. I put a USB plug in the cig socket and use it to charge iPhone , iPad , iPod camera batteries and my phone . In the last three months I've had to charge the iPad on power twice. Cost all up was less than $70. I was going to say $69 but there are too many twisted people on here. No wonder it feels like home.

how bloody simple is that, I've lost count of the number of times the daughter has buggered the temp on the engle.

I used to blame the kids for years for playing with the thermostat, till I figured out when you open and shut the lid the transit cover sometimes catches the dial. Only mine usually turns up and starts freezing stuff. Blue tac sounds like the answer. Thanks.
Lemo.

Mine would have to be (might not be my idea but I thought of it one day and did it) my throne. I cut the bottom out of a milk crate and cable tied a toilet seat (with lid) from the green shed. We use this when camping remote on the beach! The kids love it as you can go up in the dunes and do a poo with a view!
:)

Fridge slides easily on the carpet in the cruiser and stops at either front or rear wheels when it hits the join to tailgate. I just strp it down with a cambuckle strap to stop it tipping over when travelling.
Would probably work on any 4WD with a flat tailgate.

I did something similar but used a small O ring, one on the Engel and one on the Redarc remote head brake controller to stop accidental movement of the knob.

Are we allowed to nominate ideas that have not been invented?
If so, I propose some technical whizkid comes up with a short distance transmission device so emergency vehicles approaching controlled intersections either manually or automatically activate flashing lights mounted above the traffic lights, to give a visual warning to road users that an ambulance or firetruck responding to an emergency case or police car going to Macca's for a meal has a better chance of not being held up by people who either have the music so loud it breaks shop windows, or women and subbies on the mobile phone , who don't seem to get out of the way.
This way, anyone coming to an intersection with a flashing light can take a bit of care and try and see how they can avoid delays that could cost lives, or cold Big Macs.
Cheers

go to www.solarroadways.com (http://www.solarroadways.com). Their solution could do exactely that, infact even better it could change the lights to give them all greens and warn drivers 500 mtrs up the road to start pulling over etc....

Installed some courtesy lights under the Jayco for late night toilet visits. Lights up the steps and rear hand washing area. Just 3x leds leftover from some strip lighting. Possibly saw it on this site a while ago but not sure where...

This already exists in one way. Sensors at the traffic lights detects a special strobe on the emergency vehicle and cycle the lights to green. It was installed in Melbourne at major routes to hospitals during the commonwealth games. Not sure if it still operating

This is the next thing I need to get I have been talking about getting one for ages and just don't seem to get around to it.

I put loops on all the zippers. Much easier to undo.
I also have a length about 1 metre long for the annex roof. Makes it easy to attach all by myself. Easier if the wife helps and all I have to do is hold them in about the right position

Love that one Jonesy, especially for the awning zipper.

Shower Base.
This is something I put up here a few years ago, but still use. So thought I'd put it up again. This shower base is made out of a discarded bread create and 17mm ply sealed with some left over marine varnish. The down side is it doesn't pack small, but the wife loves it. So it stays.
-
Thanks Mumbals !! Now my wife wants one, she's not happy with just the foam mat ...... Good thing is those bread trays seem to grow in towering clusters around my work .. Might just have to find a discarded one
-

A small camping shower rose set up using 10mm I.D. ball valves and air line fittings plus a stainless U - tube .. fitted onto a garden stake ..Wired up with a waterproof on / off switch on the side and a connecting lead back to the shower pump / water supply / heat exchanger on the truck..
-
Love that one Jonesy, especially for the awning zipper.
Found some pictures of the awning zip.
the first one shows the tab that bent when I thought using a pole to move the zip might work.
THe second it before I cut it a little shorter. works real easy when you hold the 2 zips about 2 foot away from the tab and pull.
-
Needed a soft roof rack to hold the surf rod for our Fraser Island trip ..Some web straps and clips cut from an old car cover and left over roll cage foam [ pool noodle would have done ] a bit of PVC heated and folded for the grips, plus a bit of coat hanger .. I'm not into sewing so some industrial staples and gaffa tape binding did for the joins in the webbing straps ..
-
Over pulling the heat shrink of the trailer plug. Taped out plug and fitted a air fitting to hold the hose covering the wiring.

lts not my idea but l will claim it . When camping in winter , the fire keeps the front warm but the other side gets cold . Get an old fry pan , dixie or something like that shovel red hot coals out of the fire . One small scoup will do , then place it under the chair . instant warm of the lower back end . Works a treat last for 15 mins or so then change coals . Was tried & tested at Knockwood . The looks you start this are soon replaced by a toasty bottom :cup:

Tent peg puller. Just cut off half of the claw. Good to use as a pick if I hit it in too far and has great leverage for ones that are really stuck
