Its time to upgrade the wife's car and I was considering a Jeep....$27,000 approx. drive away...
Anyone had any experience's with them ...good or bad any feedback would be appreciated...

Which model?
Lots of good (and real) info to be found here on every model.
www.ausjeepoffroad.com.au
My favorite was my KJ. My WK2 is ok, but possibly should have bought a LWB JK.

could be the Compass (mini SUV), or the Short Wheel Base JK Wrangler. Both small inside so depends on how many in your fam and whether you want to tow. Maybe google the Jeep website and see what's on special.
www.carsales.com.au also a good place to check prices. Just search Jeep>All models>new cars>price range $25k to $35k and see what comes up

just remember if you go down this path, you'll find lot's of new friends:-)
I was in the high country last weekend and climbing up a particularly steep section on No.3 Road came across this lone horse rider coming down a narrow part of the track. Sure enough as I pulled over to one side to give her and her horse room she said "so, you bought a Jeep?", to which I replied "well yes I did, thanks for asking but more importantly what do you think of my big boat?". She said "what boat?" At which time the Toyrota add cliche kicked in and I said "uh oh, bugger!"

I've had two Jeeps over my time, both bought brand new, and have been member of a Jeep Club since 2004.
Never again would I even consider buying a Jeep again.

I've only had 1 Jeep, but otherwise this comment x 2

I've had two diesel KJ Cherokees since 2003 and I love them, but the only Jeep I'd consider now is the Grand. The smaller ones (Compass, Liberty) are Jeeps in name only as they don't have anything like the offroad ability that one associates with the Jeep brand.
Jeep's biggest problem is the cost of spare parts here in Australia - standard parts cost at least twice as much here as they do anywhere else in the world. Diehard Jeep enthusiasts get round that by importing our parts from the US or Europe, but for a general daily driver they are probably not the best option: OK whilst under warranty but expensive once the warranty runs out!
-
My wife bought a jeep, 2 1/2 years ago (I encouraged her a little bit).....
Jeep wrangler 2 door (petrol). They are fun but they are not that comfortable to drive especially when compared to my Prado. Also city driving in Brisbane it uses 14 litrs per 100 kms.....
We will be selling it soon.
-

that can be said for many cars these days.. they aren't designed to last 20 years anymore...
-
I think the $27K ad you saw is for a 2wd Patriot. We looked at them (AWD though) when we bought the wife's Forester. We both found the biggest problem was seeing out of them. The seating was quite low and the window line quite high. very hard to see around you. The gearbox was also very clunky compared to the Subie.
-
We have a 2004 KJ Jeep, and to be honest, its a fairly decent thing to own.
We paid $15,000 for it two years ago with 120,000 on the clock and in really good nick.
I cooked an auto tranny (my fault) in it a while back and at $5,000 to fix, it was a hit on the wallet.
Parts are fairly dear, fuel consumption it excellent, it uses plenty of it.
However, it does perform pretty good on Fraser etc, except for when I buried it on Inskip a few times. (Just in the soft sand after no rain and not dropping the air press, so not the Jeeps fault.
Would I sell it..... no, I like it.
Would I buy another.... not sure.
I've owned a few new cars in my time, but would never buy another new one.
I think our next 4WD will be an ex Govt. jobbie from the auctions if I can find a good one.

You don't have a brother do you? ;D
-
ive own numerous jeeps from 96 cherokee (xj) and three kj cherokees 2001 2002 and 2004 , also had a brand new 2013 jk wrangler . as a family 4wd the kjs lack luggage space and well jk wranglers have same issue unless you get the unlimited which is what i would but tomorrow if i had the money too.
-
I LOVE the idea of a Jeep.
I don't think I have the mental stamina to own one.
The Wranglers look sweet though.

sorta like "Im thinking of a lobotomy"
-
We have a 4.2l Patrol and recently (December) swapped the red KK Cherokee for a 2door JK Wrangler.
The Patrol is less likely to break and much easier and cheaper to fix when it does, especially in the bush. But the Jeep is way more fun. Hence having both.
Is the Jeep right for you? Well, since you haven't said what you are actually looking for it is impossible to answer. But if you decide to go that way, let me know and I'll put you in touch with some folk in your area.
PS. Jeep club tonight was at the the dealer who showed us the new Cherokee. They are starting off by importing 10,000 of them, so they expect them to sell well. 9 speed.

is this the new shark nose model? Not doing it for me, but suspect it will go ok.

Geez 9 speed, my work Nissan is a 9 speed...... crash box, 2wd with Detroit locker. Technically its a UD but its made by Nissan Diesel, and has a remote controlled crane!
Back to topic, I was once told that everyone at some stage in their life should own a Jeep, so guess its your time! If they ever make a dual cab version I would consider a test drive.
-
I believe (but can't confirm) that the new Cherokee is based on the same platform as the Alfa Romeo Guilietta. If so I can't see how it could ever have the off-road capability of the previous Cherokees.

A la the new Nissan Pathfinder ?....
-
Yep, happy to stand corrected, but it seems like the SUV style is the veehickal for the masses and the Wrangler is their dedicated offroadie.
The WK2 probably sits somewhere in the middle as the caravaner's tug of choice or in a few of our cases, we've had to spend $10k armour plating it for touring and offroad. Some may say not a big amount in the scheme of 4wd's, but my biggest frustration was and still is the lack of aftermarket.
The 3 letter aftermarket companies (excluding ECB and LRA) are starting to catch up but only now based on the amount sold. Their lack of initial support has turned me from a avid customer to a never step foot in their shops/trade stands ever again.
I offered my WK2 to any aftermarket company for any amount of time they needed it. It was only a local Melbourne guy that does work for other Jeep models that said 'yes please'.
Interestingly I now understand a designer from a major 3 letter company has left them to join him at Uneek4x4 and on their latest website update, they're now doing winchbars for GU's, Suzuki and FJ's.

Another important point to note. A neighbour of mine is Alan from Terrain Tamer. I bumped into Him at my local servo and He was quick to coach me on the dangers of running a modern CRD as a town vehicle. Unless they get regular good hot operating temperature runs, as opposed to local school and sport runs, there is a thing called a Diesel Particulate filter on late model CRDs that has the ability to clog up and **** the engine up really quickly.
If you're a city dweller, recommendation is to get the petrol motor.
open the floor for further discussion.

It looks better in real life. I don't hate it like when I saw the first pics.
Now Fiat owns it they are going with the more European styling, because it sells.

My inlaws have a 2012 CRD Overland with 20,000km on the clock in showroom condition and in true Jeep fashion never been offroad. They set off from Brisbane at the start of April heading toward Adelaide to start their 6 month half lap.
They haven't made it past Sydney and the Jeep has spent over 30 days in three separate Jeep Service Centres and still isn't fixed and seemingly they don't have a clue how too. Would I ever buy or recommend one..... NEVER!

Sorry to hear that coiled. I hope it gets sorted for them.
-
Took a work jeep into the dealer at essendon in vic. In the doorway of the drive in service area were three used engines out of jeeps. Hardly inspiring I thought. The work jeep was one of those 4 door soft tops. Lovely willing and smooth engine but everything else was vague as hell.

This used to happen a while ago with the DPF filters but these days the computer fixes this by every once in a while making the car run really rich which i am lead to believe causes it to run hotter so it burns the stuff out of the DPF some even have a light on the dash to let you know this is happening in case you notice any performance changes or smoke

no, you're right, definitely have to think about trading up to a newer model:-)

We were super keen on a new Grand Cherokee but decided against it in the end. They're a great looking car, but i've got one friend with a WK2 and one friend with a Wrangler, and both have talked about warranty issues and trouble getting parts. I haven't heard anything in the past 8 months or so, but back then they indicated there was a shortage of spare parts in Australia. That said, both of them were given a car to drive while theirs was out of action.
We've also got two friends who work for car dealers. One is a buyer for Q Ford, the other does fleet sales for Zupps. They both warned us to stay away from Jeep. I suppose there'll always be someone ready to say bad things about any make or model, and it's a shame to hear the negative feedback because i had my heart set on a Trailhawk, but i'd rather be disappointed about not getting a car than disappointed about getting a lemon.
Good luck with whatever you get.
Mike

I can 100% sympathise with this guy as I endured 6 years of grief with an 2002 Grand Cherokee, albeit mine was obtained 2nd hand in 06 with 112k's. The stigma and ridicule from everyone got to me eventually, not to mention the repair bills and inconvenience of having the vehicle not available, and I rejoined the Toyota fold after a 15 year absence, never to be parted again.
They may be selling heaps but thats zero indication of the resale value come end of warranty. Talk to any fleet managers, car dealers or non-jeep mechanics and you will get an idea of what to buy and what is a risk.
-
Interesting, I've got a mate that got rid of his 80series and joined the Patrol ranks.
Similar story, bought it with 120k on the odometer and ended up spending over $15k keeping the 80 on the road.
Plus the resale value isn't valid when you take into account the lease interest payments on a $100k vs $60k
-

Scarps, my repair bills topped $30k with no end in sight.
I had a 1982 FJ45 troopie, then stupidly sold it instead of replacing the engine and had a bankrupting courtship of a series 3 V8 rover, then unfathomably went to jeep so have now come full circle. But that is off topic and nobody else cares, the point is that this particular brand has a poor reputation in the aust automotive industry compared to most jap makes and for very real reasons and not just the whining of a few. Im sure the majority of jeeps are ok, but the chance of having issues is a point to consider when buying in my book rather than price alone. I could have bought a brand new GC overland and loaded half the ARB catalogue onto it for the price I paid for my used sahara. And that is the ultimate insult on Jeep.

don't necessarily disagree but you are incorrect on your statement re ARB.

Okay, a quarter?? I would have had over $10k which at the time would have bought most of the available goodies, though I understand there are now lots more supported products.
I was looking at the GC but then multiple stories surfaced about the 4wd system going into meltdown and disengaging the front axle. That and the fact that the gearbox was still only technically a 4 sp auto with an extra overdrive (the currebt 8sp would be nice) were enuff dis incentives for me.

agree:-)
I must just be one of the lucky ones. Started with a KJ V6 and now the WK2 Laredo CRD. Outside of availability of aftermarket access, great experience to date. Plus I love the banter, keeps me motivated:-)
I should also consider myself a bit fortunate, at least I'll never have to worry about his issue....
Plus Jeep chicks are hot!

I had the same with a Nissan Navara owned it for 12 months from new 3 months in the dealers . Unable to fix so gave it back Would I ever buy or recommend a new Nissan No.
-
Lots of haters so thought I better give some balance to the argument. I've had my Grand Cherokee for over two years now and I honestly believe it's the best value, best driving vehicle in the segment and I guess this is reflected in sales volume. It is a little softer offroad (not that I've bogged it yet) but it has three great engine options including a diesel that kills everything in the class and quadra lift air suspension that is is fantastic option.
It's let down by a lack of underbody protection, in particular around the bumper which they recommend you remove before heading offroad. They've also been plagued by a bunch of software bugs which I think are nearly sorted as you hear less and less about them but things like the sand driving issue was very annoying for those affected.
I've noticed the aftermarket is catching up with ARB releasing a bar and lift in recent times, also a company called Cheif doing good work with recovery hooks and underbody protection. Murchinson's, Uneek and ECB were on the band wagon earlier so good for them.
I'm pricing a new one at the moment along with a Ranger and a Prado, the only reason I'm considering anything other than the Jeep is because Chrysler Australia are a joke when it comes to parts availability - it seems that everything I've needed is 2-4wks away and as I need the car for work it's not acceptable and really has me questioning my loyalty.
Here's my baby, isn't she pretty!

Just an update, the Jeep is still in the Jeep Service Centre unable to be fixed and they have missed out on their half lap with friends and family.
