Title: What luck ....
Post by: McGirr on May 29, 2013, 04:59:02 PM
Well the cruiser had all of a sudden started making a clunking sound and after going to 2 mechanics the bearings at the bottom of the motor went putting metal shavings through the motor.

The verdict a re conditioned motor plus the radiator was not the best. Total cost $11,000  :'(

The mechanic said the damage to the motor was too much to rebuild and it was better to get another.
After the initial shock and adding more money on top of spending the $11,000 to buy another cruiser I decided to get it done.  :'(

The mechanic said everything else is in great condition with the car. At least I will have the cruiser buried with me in the future. It only had 136,000 on the clock.

We are not sure how it happened but it did and it will be ready in a weeks time to give it a good run in before the Gulf Trip.

Donations can be sent and tax deductible  ;D

Its a Jeep thing.... :D

Bugger!

That sucks mate - I really feel for you. Still - it could have been worse if it let go half way across the gulf. At least you get to repair it on your terms. Not much comfort given the $$$s involved, I know. All the best with the rebuild.

Cheers,
Matto

This 4wding/travelling gig is an expensive hobby, but it's always worth it in the end.

Hope this means you'll have a trouble free trip then :)

Bugger Mark.  But better than in the middle of nowhere and having to pull out of the trip plus organise tows and finding a way back home.  Eleven big ones must hurt.  I would have to sell a kidney  ;D  Good luck with everything.

Ouch...thats gotta hurt...

Between you relying on your cooking for your beer supply, and relying on JK's singing  for money for the plate, you are in for one LONG trip.......

BUT then again...if I planned this correctly...........I might have a talk to Kerry.........we might just take along a camper of beer and $2- coins...for that we won't have to prep, cook, wash up, and we get evening entertainment.......there maybe something in this....... :cup:

Ouch!

How long have you owned it?
With just 136Kkm in 13 years, it may have had lots of short trips and if it hasn't had its 'severe use' servicing every 2500 or 5000km (?) an autopsy might show the oil pickup to be blocked due to sludging etc

The problem is I could get a motor from Brisbane cheaper but with freight and warranty it was not worth it. I will be talking to the owner of the mechanic business when he comes back from holidays on Monday regarding the price. The old motor has been taken out and the new one will go in today or Monday.

"The mechanic said the damage to the motor was too much to rebuild and it was better to get another."
but I'd be interested to see what was damaged beyond repair.

Anyway, time is an enemy and getting things wrong is ****ed if your not a mechanical kinda bloke. Some of us have to suffer and pay up the coin :(
Title: Re: What luck ....
Post by: McGirr on May 31, 2013, 05:43:25 AM

We think the damage was caused by the air conditioner compressor seizing up putting pressure on the motor causing the problem. I went to the mechanics and he showed me the damage with all the metal shavings in the sump.

Still in negotiations with them re price and I am pretty sure I can get the bill down to around $9000 as I also need a new air conditioner compressor.

Re building the motor is out of the question as I work weekends and don't have the facilities to work on the motor.

Mr McGirr,

Buy new motor, stick in Cruiser.

Keep old motor, rebuild yourself slowly, and stick it in a go-kart when done (although, to be honest, that's my solution for any left-over motors that happen to be lying about). It would be a hell of a ride!

Cheers,
Matto :)

Indeed, but no way I could do it for $12k. I'd probably have to pay someone to do it too, and then the car is off the road for that long, etc. Plus you have to live with one of the gauges never working, and the cruise control not running right, or XYZ. I've had a imported car before, and it was hard enough getting parts for that and having to explain "well, the motor is from this Aus-delivered car, but the suspension is more like that one...". It's good fun, but living with them day-to-day can be annoying. Having an uncommon engine conversion would be even worse, I'd expect.

When I toasted the engine in the FIL's ute, he had it swapped for a reco engine exactly the same. Was the quickest, easiest, cheapest way to get the car moving again. Also, you know that it will be exactly the same as it was before. Whilst I can see the attraction of setting up to a better motor, I can also appreciate just doing a straight swap. A week later the car was back on the road, all done and dusted.

Cheers,
Matto :)

I haven't swapped an engine since about '88, and then I think it cost me $800- to keep the Mrs, mighty Corolla up and running.

Just wondering how you know, how many klms on the engine your buying these days?

My error there Mark, I missed the "reconditioned engine" bit in your previous post..... I was thinking you were going for an "exchange" type engine, like an import low klm donk, I've always wondered as a buyer, how a fella is to know where or what the true history behind those engines are...?

most dont have a choice due to budget limits.
I know a bill of $11,000 would ruin many of my mates. they would probably sell their car as parts.
Title: Re: What luck ....
Post by: McGirr on May 31, 2013, 02:00:06 PM

I had to make a decision either sell the car for parts , its in great condition and set up how I want it, buy another second hand one or bite the bullet and get the repairs done. I decided to get the repairs done.

I have had 2 other quotes and will be seeing the owner of the mechanics place on Monday to compare prices. The company does all our company cars. Talking to the mechanics there they reckon it would be close to the other quotes of around the $8600. I still have to get a new air conditioner compressor on top of this and have been quoted about $700 fitted , re gassed etc.

Monday is discussion day  ;D

when you pick it up check to see if they have included a cooling system service and maybe a fuel delivery service as most engine reconditioners speculate that they must be done as warranty may be void.

With the 4.5L petrol own thing that can catch people out if changing or replacing the coolant. These motors are prone to getting an airlock and do whilst they seem to be full of coolant they aren't, get hot, crack the head.

Solution is to fill it with the front end elevated a bit.

Good luck Mark, you know you've got a good'un now.

It's a problem with quite a few cars, radiator below the heads and heater hoses.

Get youself one of these radiator funnels to help bleed the system.  Locks on over the radiator cap, spill free filling and allows you to fill up past the highest point of the cooling system to bleed it.  Also has a plug for the funnel so you can remove it when full.

Geoff

Yes all included in the price. It's great to have it back. Will be getting everything ready over Sat and Sun. Taking it for a good run on Monday to see if anything appears. Need to get 800 K's up before Thursdays service. Talk about cutting it fine.
