Title: Camp oven legs, what for?
Post by: Axl on March 10, 2013, 11:04:45 AM
I recently brought myself a 10 piece Spinifex cast iron set from Anaconda, as this is my first camp oven I am wondering why they have legs? If I wanted to sit the oven directly onto a hot plate (Ozpig) it wont beacause of these little legs.

That's true, but if you stand them on coals the legs help with air flow so the coals stay hot

G'day Axl,

Yep, apparently the legs will help with keeping coals / heatbeads etc burning as the pot isn't sitting directly on the hot stuff.... though in saying that i've never cooked with a CO that has legs, and never found an issue with not having them.
None of my pots have legs under them, but plenty of CO Makers over the years have cast them with legs. All horses for courses really. If u don't reckon you'll ever need the legs, grind ém off.....

With regard to using a CO over an Oz Pig, i imagine i wouldn't be using the CO on top of a plate, i'd just be putting the CO direct over the open top, that's what i'm thinking anyway..... Do the legs get in the road if u tried this?

The other option is leave this CO with it's legs on, i'm not sure how many people u normally cook for, but as the CO in your set is a 9qrt, you may find yourself needing a bigger one, so buy the bigger one with a flat base....... oh and don't rule out buying yourself a spun steel unit, i'd recommend the "Aussie Camp Oven" from Southern Metal Spinners.....

Either way, welcome to the world of Camp Oven Cooking, enjoy yourself and always remeber to keep the fluids up when cooking.

Thanks guys, Barrabart your right mate the PCD of the legs allow the CO to fit on the Ozpig with the hot plate swung out of the way and that is the way ill use it.

I was thinking more along the lines of keeping it warm on the side plate. Ill give it a go as suggested and if it doesnt work I can soon cut them off.

I had one that had legs on it when I bought it and mostly they were a pain in the a$$. It tended to wear holes in things it was stored in... until one of them broke off. Fixed that with a 4" grinder. Haven't looked back. It's cooked some good stews in it's life too and haven't missed the legs at all.

I've been close to legless when cookin' with the camp oven........... reminds me too, it's handy to be aware of the stop, drop & roll procedure, the run scream and flap ur arms routine is entertaining for a crowd, however lacks in flame extinguishing qualities.....

I think you only need legs if you want to get another   and CO's are useless at that with or without them.

None of mine have legs ... I haven't missed them at all.
