G'day all,
I've been looking at a roof rack awning for the '200.. Spoke with the guys at Roo Systems, ARB and Tigerz11... Any sugestions?? The ARB seams best value out of the lot.. Would love to know any thoughts..
Dave

I like the Hannibal ones the best but they are also pretty expensive. Heavy duty canvas and no poles.
-
I bought this one and very happy with it
http://www.kulkyne.com/au/4WD-Side-Awning.html (http://www.kulkyne.com/au/4WD-Side-Awning.html)
I got it much cheaper as it was bundled with a roof rack and several other accessories.

I got mine from a bloke in brisbane, he has a 4wd shop though Im not sure what it's called.
I paid $185 for mine and its brilliant.
The biggest selling feature for me wasn't the price, it was the fact that all the other awnings I had seen only had plastic hinges for the legs.
Mine are alloy.

It seriously takes around 30sec to put up and maybe 2 mins to pack away.
If your interested let me know and I will pm you his phone number
Cheers

They all seem much of a muchness to me, though Evo's point about alloy hinges does stand out as quality.
I've got an ARB awning, it is excellent, though both the tags on the zippers have come off as they simply wear through. I'll start another thread on how to rejuvenate the bags, as mine is looking grubby now.
Even on a still day, put out the ropes and pegs. #hardexperience
-
Thanks guys they all look good! Evo, that would be great if I could have his number
-
I have the OzTrail awning, it too has the plastic hinges, but at $189.00 at the time, I could not beat it.
Explorer Canvas made an extension to suit too....
Jules, interested in your rejuvenation process....
-
Pm sent mate,
Comon Jules, don't leave us hanging like this........................

i think i paid $175 for my Roo Systems one @ their NSW store opening - love it
but i guess i could of gone to a curtain maker and got a retractable holland blind and made something up myself (this is also a good cheap way of buying a projector screen)
-
How much are you prepared to pay for it. I have a deluxe Supa Peg awning.
Proper canvas. Also have an extra wall thats used as a wall or lifted with supplied poles extending the coverage. Very solid gear and locally made. Cannot fault it in anyway.
-
Yeah Jules ! :worthles:
-
Geez, you blokes....
Here are some photos. This in no way suggesting that the ARB product is inferior, I am very happy with it and have noticed the same discoloration on other brands of awning as well.
See the dark spots. I can't wash them off.

See the missing zipper tabs
(http://gallery.myswag.org/gallery/d/43656-2/IMG_3670.JPG)
This is why; they simply wear out swinging in the wind. I found this one just as it was going to fall off.

Nice Jules!! What are you doing at home by the way??
-
Just got off the phone with Matt at Supapeg and he's droppin one of these out this arvo (except the patrol) wouldn't want one anyways  Thanks again all!

A couple of small zip ties will fix the missing tags and they
don't rattle.

Hi
Do you mind if I can ask the price?
-
Tassie, retail they are $399 for a free standing or $229 for a pole model!! Just got home and opened her up, impeccable workmanship, wax converters canvas and awesome cover!! Very impressed
-
Also guy who's got the option for walls on their awning?
As I know some brands don't allow that option.

Thanks trackabout I did have quick look at these and they did look good, evolution sent me some more detailed photos and they also looked and cheaper thanks Evo .

No worries mate,
I did look at the supapegs, and they were great! But I only had the cash at the time for the standard post one and I am a little lazy.
So I went with the cheaper/quicker option.
Just remember though, as soon as you get the awning Mr Trackabout we need photos!! ;D

I have the Supa -Peg also..
I went for the budget model that is 2mtr wide and 3mtrs out from the car , it,s not free standing I have to put 2 poles up , but from whjat I have seen all awnings need a pole put up in the intrests of keeping it from blowing over.
I liked the 3mtrs out from car as it can go all the way to the ground and still leave enough area to sleep under or put a pole at 1.5mts and then lean-too the last bit for added shelter.
In summarry I found the price $229 , the quality canvas and workmanship ,plus the different styles of set up of this budget awning far outweighed the negatives of not having a free standing unit.
This is the one I have

Been very happy for the price and quality...

That lean-too idea is GOLD!

Hmm, 3m out, that is good. I've slept under mine in torrential rain and at 2.4m long and I think 2m wide there's not a lot of overhang above my swag.
-
I love my Foxwing, worth every cent i spent on it.
I bought 2 walls/extensions too.
it's been used more for shade than for rain
Stevo
-
We love our foxwing too. Provides great shade and protection. Also keeps the fridges shaded in the back.

gday mate....was it this bloke you bought it from? http://myworld.ebay.com.au/aussieoutdoordirect&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID&_trksid=p3984.m1543.l2533 (http://myworld.ebay.com.au/aussieoutdoordirect&ssPageName=STRK:MEFSX:SELLERID&_trksid=p3984.m1543.l2533) had mine a few years after buying from this guy and more than happy with it
-
Can't wait Mr Trackabout, ( I'm a bit of a pic Wh*&r)
I don't think it is mate, The guy I got them from is from Brissy.
Does yours look similar?
He did say that a few company's run the same one that Powerful4x4 do and they just re logo it.
Cheers

Looks exactly the same as the OzTrail on my roof...

My neighbour has an ARB awning on his work van which has failed on him so I recommended Supapeg.

Or a bit of rope/corp. Tie it in a loop ND larks head it on.
No rattle. Lasts ages. No sharp bits.

These work well.

Another vote for the Hannibal ones. They had one set up at penrith camping show. It was the only one left up in the winds, very impressive.

As promised ladies and gentleswaggers' Spent my Australia day fitting my all Australian roof awning... Love it, its out in the yard getting rained on now, we'll call it seasoning??.. Also fitted the ARB roofrack I pulled off a week or so ago to be powder coated "Trackabout Aztec Silver of all colours" Looks great!
Had a bit$h of a time as one of the roof rail nuts dropped into the roof (internal) could not get to it from the inside.. Not happy.. Then the thread stripped out.. By then all of Moss St was all looking at Trackabout wondering who was getting assaulted in the workshop. So there I was fishing it back up through a 8mm hole and trying to hold it there as I mounted the rail (with all my 15 hands)... Being a fitter by trade you think I'd have this done in seconds however I think sitting behind a computer all day has taken it's toll..
Anyways I wish I had progress photos, however I found my phone over the road after I had finished... Next time I'll give ARB a call  Dave
-
That is veeerrry nice set up you have there. Good one.

Guey, do you like the Cruza but??
-
Lol its ok. I'll be nice as you just never know when you might need a snatch from someone. :cup:
-
That looks great Dave.
Is that the normal height of the work lights on your rear wheel carriers?
-
Thay extend up Jules, about nother foot and a bit.. Bright as too..
-
Looks like a good fit mate, I really like the color of the roof cage too. Very spoofy.
Cheers
Evo
-
I have one on the side and one at the rear, both are ARB and are very happy with them ! ;D
-
Paul at Cockatoo Canvas makes an awning that needs no legs.. Hes tested it driving with it setup on the side of the car upto 80kph without issue.
Im waiting for a great invention of awning that needs no roofrack.
I'd love a foxwing - by far the best idea.
-
Agree Bruce,
Foxwing would be the way.
