I am a member of several other forums, one of which has been recently torn apart via internal conflicts.
I have suggested there that a Forum Etiquette Sticky is required.
We have one here:
http://myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=2.0 (http://myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=2.0)
Which is pretty basic.
I have suggested to the other forum that one like this may be more appropriate. Note, it comes from
Mozilla, so mentions them.
What do others think, do we need something like this?
Ground Rules
There are a few ground rules for participation in forums hosted by mozilla.org. Please respect these rules, and each other.
Be civil.
No personal attacks. Do not feel compelled to defend your honor in public. Posts containing personal attacks may be removed from the news server.
Stay on topic.
Most of these groups are high-traffic and read by busy people, so please pay attention to the topic of your messages, and check that it still relates to the charter of the forum to which you are posting. Off-topic discussion not taken to private email, mozilla.general, or any place where it is not considered off-topic, by someone who knows they should be taking it elsewhere, is eligible for removal from the news server.
Be kind to newcomers.
Newcomers may be annoying. They ask the wrong questions, including ones that seem obvious (or whose answers seem easy to find). But lots of valued contributors started out this way, and treating newcomers kindly makes them more likely to turn into the valuable community members we all know and love (and cut some slack when they mess up).
So while you don't have to humor them or suffer them gladly, and it's fine to point out when they make mistakes, point newcomers in the right direction in addition to turning them away from the wrong ones, and be kind to them in the process of correcting their transgressions.
Let sleeping dogs lie.
It's tempting to revisit controversial decisions you disagree with, but it's rarely productive to do so, since it almost always results in the same heated, lengthy, and time/energy draining discussions leading to the same conclusion that was reached in the last round.
Therefore, for issues already raised, discussed, and decided upon, reopen the discussion only if you have significant new information that would reasonably prompt reconsideration of the original decision.
No large attachments.
Do not send binary attachments, including screen shots, and especially including screen shots of textual dialog boxes. Many people read these messages through slow network connections; try to be respectful of them. If you have a large file that you would like to distribute, put it on a Web page and announce the URL instead of attaching it.
Trim your follow-ups.
Do not quote the entire content of the message to which you are replying. Include only as much as is necessary for context. Remember that if someone wants to read the original message, they can; it is easily accessible. A good rule of thumb is, don't include more quoted text than new text.
Identify your subject matter.
Not everyone has time reading all forum postings. To ensure that your message reach the right people at timely manner, identify your subject matter clearly in the subject line. Subjects like a “question” and “Mozilla problem” are not very helpful.
No “test” messages.
Please do not send test messages to the newsgroups except to mozilla.test.
Cheers, Mace.

Is this all because I said my farts smell in a thread last night Al? ;)
But seriously all forums need guidelines but who ever reads them?
I find most of that common courtesy and I like to see people act the same way in a forum as they would face to face..... Big ask at times I know!
-
Fully agree but sometimes it's great to watch the banter in the electrical section. ;D
I think being more polite to newbies, yes they may ask repetitive questions but letting them post their opinions keeps this forum going.
I remember when I first joined 600000 beers ago, I was not sure what to post and whether I would be shot down but the warm welcome was appreciated.
Let new members find there way and it is so easy being cynical typing on a keyboard but always think before posting. There are some great threads from some very clever and talented people on here.

Exactly, that was a page long and had no camper or 4x4 pictures in it so i didn't read it.
Better just to say if you would not say it to your grandmothers face don't type it.

"Better just to say if you would not say it to your grandmothers face don't type it."

I don't have any grandmothers *sob*
Waaaaaaaahhh!!

Neither do I anymore :'( but we all did once and chances are if they were still around, we would be polite to them.

Perhaps the half page edited version now in place may be more appropriate.
Yes, people mightnt have the inclination to read them, however, they are a reference point for moderators which could make their life easier, and act as a reference point for new members.
-
Be nice, or I'll rip ya bloody arms off.
The forum is a collective of folks who share an interest in camper trailers, camping, 4wding etc, but we're all individuals. As much as it's incumbent on everyone to be polite it also helps if folks don't arc up too much when another crosses the invisible line. We all have bad days (refer to my opening statement) from time to time. A gentle rebuke is fine, or an enquiry as to their well being.

I think that is the real worth Mace as the fact is less than 5% of people would read these on any forum and rude people tend to be rude no matter where they are. Having a guideline to point these people to with a behave or leave message is important. My experience with forums (and I think at last count I am a member of over 20) tends to make me believe that nothing changes these people and they tend to end up being banned in the end anyway.
-
....did you say something?? :) :) :)

Agreed. The Forum that Im in that had the problems is now sending both an Etiquette Guide and a Copyright message with the introductory email to all new members as their login is confirmed. They had an issue with members ripping of posted material for commercial gain.
Those issues dont look likely here, but do happen.
Anyway, just a suggestion for an improved process, up to the mods to consider. I thought if i posted it, at least they would get some feedback.
So, even if you think its a cr@p idea, post up.
cheers, Al.

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW,
C'mon fella's (and ladies), I love the leccie section.
Sure the banters good fun and everyone here has a sense of humour, but I love reading some of the threads in the sparks section.
Gives me a laugh, and helps me remember that no matter how cranky my day has made me, someone else is crankier!!!!
Always remember that some people are only alive cos you reckon its not worth going to jail over!!!! >:D >:D >:D >:D

Yawn. . . .

As much as people bag the electrical section it is still the busiest of the technical subforums, if you look at the number of questions asked it is pretty easy to see that a lot of people get value out of it. Sure it gets heated at times but you can't say people are shying away from it.
-
Mace you have done the impossible ;D you've started world peace, only 7 billion to go :cup:

Not me ... I notice and read the headings. Common Sense ... hands up those that have it? *Kit_e noted just over 8,000 hands* Right. So it's just the Electrical Section then. ;D
I doubt you'd ever get disbandment of a camper trailer forum ... unless those disruptive ones from that other forum you mentioned find their way here ... >:D

That's right. Us with any electrical knowledge are shocking people. We always provide Resistance, stay at Ohm and our partners think we are reVolting.
I was staring at a globe the other night and my wife asked "Watt are you doing", I replied " A little light reading...."

LOL! Reminds me of before we bought our solar panels. We were in camp and out of the blue, he says "How much are those 120's?" I replied "120 what?" We both laughed at my reply. We'd been thinking about 120 WATT solar panels. LOL!
Just a little light humour for you.
