SM33.  I've used it for ulcers but it's suppose to be good for inflamed gums aswell.

OOH the pain of it.  How long have you been chewing the nurofen & panamax/panadol?  I know they are the medications that my dentist recommends (the one I work with).  Here's hoping the morning comes quickly so that you can visit the dentist to relieve your pain. He may offer Antibiotics and a chance to sort the problem out a bit later on.

I  couldn't be sure that sm33 would work on this TA by the sound of it:)

No need to hate the dentist cause he's the one who can fix your problem. (I agree with hating his bill at the end of treatment though).

cheers rellbell

GEt 2 the dentist ASAP.

You have probably picked up a secondary infection in the gum as well if its a molar/pre molar (know pain from experience).

Straight Scotch.  Sugars in bundy/beer wont be helping either!!

You can buy 'toothache drops' over the counter at the chemist. Very similar to clove oil only specifically designed for your purpose.

I've used that product - soak a bit of cotton wool ball in it and jam it into the cavity, 20 minutes later no pain, and good for 6-8 hours. Tastes a bit like petrol though, but that goes away.

Same problem. Went to my dentist, refilled and thought problem solved. Nope it got worse so back to dentist and one referral later I went to the Endodontist. Sure Wayne we can fix that but it will be next week and it will cost you, wait for it, $2775 for a Root canal. DOH! No thanks  I will get it pulled. Forgot to mention another 2000 for a crown.

Often there's an infection stirring things up and dentists seem to like to treat that before they do anything, which is the opposite of what us doctors like to do which is fix the problem and then let antibiotics mop up the stragglers afterwards.
So, maybe a trip to the GP for some antibiotics can give you some relief before you can get to see your dentist.

I tend to agree. Having been smashed in the mouth with a cricket ball at 21 I have (Had) 7 root canals done over the last 20 years and had infections in the eye tooth almost continually. just last Month could no longer save the root as it was fractured in 3 places as were two others and had them removed. Needed to get a bridge made while I wait for the implants. I've spent 43K on my mouth over the last 20 years.

For pain Nuro Plus has been the best and you can take it with Panadol. The doctor could give you some thing better. I find Tramol good for moderate tooth pain (Not much good for any thing else though) and not that I'm proud of this but I spent the last 3 Month on 40mg of Oxycontin as when I had the mold done for the bridge half the tooth was pulled out. I ell you it's not fun getting off that Shit.

if you do get antibiotics ask for a combination of Amoxill and Flagyl. The Flaygl works better in areas like root canal. No I'm not telling, not a Doc just suggesting from experiance. I think Patrol would agree with the Flagyl though. PS. You can't drink with it though. Makes you feel sick

So hang on to them if you can
Title: Re: mad tootheache
Post by: Patr80l on March 29, 2012, 09:41:26 AM
Flagyl is used for anaerobes (bugs than don't like oxygen) and not one I would have thought of for the mouth but I might try it next time!
Amoxil is the dentist's favourite but bacterial resistance is becoming common.   Augmentin (= amoxil with a second drug included to counteract what the bacteria do to resist the amoxil) is OK for anaerobes too, so that is what I had tended to use for dental infections.

You're right about the Flagyl and alcohol.   It is similar to Antatabuse, a drug sometimes given to alcoholics to dissuade them from drinking!   You will chuck!

Bring on tuesday. does anyone know how long i'll have to be off the sherbet for after i get the hooter ripped out? i have a wedding to go to on thursday and i would say it will be a big night.

i use Grapper that dose it for me and nurifin plus dose it too with the grapper take a good swig and swirl it around the mouth it was sting like mad but after a while its kills the nerve in that tooth

or if that don't work well go say hello to the dentist witch i hate

Good luck

Hey guys i'm a dentist. SteveandViv and Patrol got it right. Flagyl is the mainstay for deep seated suspected infection and combines with amoxil (augmentum) really well so its covers all bases of the mouth bacteria thats causing the pain. This combination in well known with dentists.

I said suspected because the primary cause of pain is from pulpal inflammation ie inflammation/ irritation of the stuff inside the tooth. Theres heaps more blood being pumped into this tooth and thats why it throbs.... so nurofen being (an anti inflammatory) should work the best.

Ifs its caning then take both, but ask pharmacist or GP bc i dont know your medical history.

removal of this tooth is a good option because trying to do a root canal on a tooth like this wont be too succcessful. So it'll be a $2500 gamble where the success is largely dependant on the skill of the dentist.

Hey PM me if you need more advice

Reading all the thread responses on dental treatments and the number of swaggers responding you would almost think half the swaggers who visit this website, have a dental chair as an optional accessory in their camper trailer.

Turn up to a swaggers national meet, to swap CT stories, have a beer, BBQ & root canal therapy all under canvas.

I'm thinking of the theme song from the opening scenes in MASH with campers all running from their tents at a Swaggers Meet with lignocaine and  a generator operated dental drill as a fellow  swagger staggers around with a tooth ache.

Cheers

18 years after my first appointment to get rid of  2 very suspect wisdom teeth, I finally actually turned up to get them removed just recently. 10am appointment 12.15 two teeth lighter.  4.30 relaxing with a XXXX. Went down very nicely.  Enjoy your wedding!

Modified to add the following disclaimer. I would not recommend following any advice from the this poster unless you want to! At your own peril ;)

Hi Mike... I'm wondering how can you say that root canal treatment "on a tooth like this wont be too successful", without knowing anything about the problem?? I've read the thread carefully and can't glean any information on the tooth's structural integrity, or suitability to save. It's fair enough if the OP has chosen extraction after getting advise on options/cost/chances of success etc, but I don't know how you have come to your conclusion / advice based on the information that, basically, it hurts like a bitch. Have I missed something?
No offence, just asking

It won't be successful on your wallet, that's for sure!!

I was in a similar situation to you, tooth was one back from the lower wisdom tooth. $120 to remove or $$$'s to repair/fix/diagnose.

Got a nice gap there now and don't miss it for 1 second.

PS if you get it removed then before you do google "dry socket", you might then have second thoughts about sinking piss or having a smoke for a while.....
Title: Re: mad tootheache
Post by: Shane083 on March 30, 2012, 06:48:07 AM
it is the one infront of the lower wisdom, i have reduced risk straight away from getting dry socket as i dont smoke, no history of it, and i dont dont any form of birth control, although if i have a massive night that can sometimes be birth control for a couple of days if you know what i mean ;D

If anything else hurt that bad you (and me) would just get it fixed.

try walking  into the public health (dentist ) if its really bad sometimes they will do it.(scream/moan a bit and they might just help you)

Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth
by Pam Ayres

Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth,
And spotted the perils beneath,
All the toffees I chewed,
And the sweet sticky food,
Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth.

I wish I'd been that much more willin'
When I had more tooth there than fillin'
To pass up gobstoppers,
From respect to me choppers
And to buy something else with me shillin'.

When I think of the lollies I licked,
And the liquorice allsorts I picked,
Sherbet dabs, big and little,
All that hard peanut brittle,
My conscience gets horribly pricked.

My Mother, she told me no end,
"If you got a tooth, you got a friend"
I was young then, and careless,
My toothbrush was hairless,
I never had much time to spend.

Oh I showed them the toothpaste all right,
I flashed it about late at night,
But up-and-down brushin'
And pokin' and fussin'
Didn't seem worth the time... I could bite!

If I'd known I was paving the way,
To cavities, caps and decay,
The murder of fiIlin's
Injections and drillin's
I'd have thrown all me sherbet away.

So I lay in the old dentist's chair,
And I gaze up his nose in despair,
And his drill it do whine,
In these molars of mine,
"Two amalgam," he'll say, "for in there."

How I laughed at my Mother's false teeth,
As they foamed in the waters beneath,
But now comes the reckonin'
It's me they are beckonin'
Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth.

half of the tooth was missing not sure how but it was, so the gum had actually grown in where the piece was missing so they had to cut the gum out from in the hole and around the tooth, i think they put four stitches in. its still quite tender this morning but it will be right tomorrow casue i have a wedding to go to

I'm starting to think this thread with all it's deep myswag dental technical advice should be moved a technical/ mechanical forum folder.

I hate to think what would have happened if somebody put up a post suffering constipation / blockage and the amount of myswag medical / technical advice you would receive if this toothache thread is a comparison to go by.
