Title: HID driving lights, any in a small size?

I want to get some HID driving lights but can't find any that are in a smaller size light housing, I'm aware that they need space to store "ballast", but can't help to think that some one has got around this problem, or can someone point me in the right direction to where I can source some lights from.
Every HID light seems to minmum size of 200mm diameter, I would prefer to be able to get something smaller ;D

One way to do it would be to get which ever size you want and then convert them to HID.
Then you can place the ballast behind the grill or under the front bar.

HID produces so much light I'm guessing the larger housings are more effective. LED lights are more commonly found in small form factor.

Post by: SUPA105 on February 26, 2012, 08:42:43 PM: Narva & Hella both do compact HID.....Narva in 80mm & 100mm and Hella even smaller I think.....but you will need a second mortgage on your house to buy them, as others have said, buy the lights in the size you require in a quality halogen and convert, cost less than half.

I'm pretty sure your right Jules, if you go too small with HID you end up with a pencil beam of light that can blind a flea on a roo at 5km but doesn't illuminate the one about to become your new hood ornament 50m ahead. ;D

Post by: OffRoadDave on February 27, 2012, 07:52:21 AM: I'd say the only reason led lights are only in small form factor is because a large lens makes no economic sense, high power led lights have the lens as part of the led itself which is where the majority of focused light is emitted, with only a very minimal amount of light being redirected forward by the external reflector.

Going back conventional lights for a tic, as far as beam pattern is concerned, that all depends on the design, for example on my own Lf170's, I use a standard lens for range, and a combo lens to give a wide spread, the combo lens gives me excellent light with an arc of about 80 degrees in front of the vehicle to a range of about 50 mtrs at the widest point, and getting further as you come back to centre with possibly 200mtrs straight ahead.

I will say that this was only possible with hid inserts, the halogen never had enough light output to give the range so I used the standard covers on both.

The model is 'PreRunner' and they are apparently designed for 160km/h night racing in the desert.

They going onto a frontlift garbage truck, I spend a bit of time early in the mornings down back roads and really, really would like, no, NEED a bit more to see with, hence HID's.
The lights have to be mounted on the grill to stay out of harms way, really limited choices, I might even have to mount the lights into the grill which means cutting and hacking into the front of my $197000 pride and joy, will consider mounting behind grill with some fins cut away for light to get out, but has limited room

Yeah they seem pretty good. More of a fog spread pattern but still bright.

That second vid was very impressive
