I would like to thank a few people for there kind and generous help, yesterday the right hand stub axel sheared off on my Camper trailer after hitting a pot hole on the Peninsula Development Road 40Ks out of Coen, the Camper flipped onto it's side causing a lot of damage to the camper ending our dream holiday, these people came to our aid as soon as they found out what had happened, I would like to thank Maureen, Kevin, and Nev from the Cafe in Coen who organized to retrieve our camper, get my wife to the clinic for a check up (all good) and organize accommodation for us at Coen Homestead thanks Linda, thanks also to Nev, Cath, Bruce and Nola for staying with the camper while I went for help, if ya ever passing through Coen stop at the Cafe for a cuppa and chat or stay a night at the Homestead, there all top people in a top little Town.
We can't thank them enough

Bugger, glad to hear you're both ok and the locals helped out.
-
Good to hear that you guys are ok, we to had some issues on our trip. The people up that way are fantastic.
Cheers hutchie
-
It's typical of the locals up there well done. Main thing everyone was ok. The roads can be treacherous sometimes even if they look ok.

Bummer guys, glad everyone is OK,...................... it's always good to hear stories of the Aussie '' help if you can '' attitude.
Cheers

Good to hear everything was ok and no major injuries :cup:. Our friends, Steveandviv had to take up the Local Coen Hospitality as well, for a few days due to mechanical failure, but I'll let Steve tell you his story.
-
They are the same people that helped me out in 09 when I blew the clutch in the Nav.
Wonderful people. I grew up out west, and it is good to see that hospitality still exists today.
-
Bugger about the trailer and holiday, but as long as nobody is hurt.. Good to hear your all ok...
Good to hear people still interested in helping others these days...
-
I,m glad that nobody was hurt, yet reading about the hospitality aspect brought to mind an incident of my own (not wishing to detract from this one),,that some may find interesting.
I was driving back to Weipa, just a young fella, in '82, by myself, in one of those new fangled hilux,s, (the one with the axles under the springs), and south of Coen i passed a shorty L/cruiser on the side of the road with the bonnet up. About 20 k,s further, i came upon an aboriginal elder walking along the road. I stopped and offered him a lift as i suspected he was headed to Coen. After some chit chat, and finding out that the shorty was his, he made a comment to me, that i,ve never forgotten, to this day. " You must be a local', he said, "Them bloody tourists are frightened of us Abo,s", "none of them would stop for me".
Yes, i lived in Weipa for 10 years, and grew up there.
Despite the progress in communications, vehicle technologies, and more road houses, the distances are still the same, and the cape road still takes its toll on travelers. You just never know when you might need assistance from a stranger, as it could save your life as well as material possesions. This is one of the reasons why the local people up there are so good.
Take care.

Another example of true 'Aussie Mateship' that this country was founded on.
Glad to hear all turned out well.

I have now heard/read several good things about the people of Coen and based on that I will drop in on the way through there on my trip to the cape. I am a believer of what goes around comes around and bit of my tourist dollar is my part in this.

A short letter to the editor from a family that encountered some bad luck up near Coward Springs.
I am proud to say that Colin and Dave are close friends of mine. Dave has nearly finished fixing the family's trailer. Repaired the drawbar and new (second hand but not bent) springs included...

And Dr Peter is not only a friendly and great doctor at the local hospital, he also runs a youth group as well as teaches music (including violin to my eldest daughter), plays in a local band...
-
I here Coen getting a bad rap now and then, maybe from the once in a lifetime adventure Latte set, But i think its a top little town. They have also put a lot of effort into the town in the last 10 years so make the effort to stop, spend some money, and repay them for their effort.

Peter. We saw you there as we also waited for a part for the Paj. We were camped down the back and I would have walked past you when they were welding the Camper up - what a small world.
But you are so right, they are a great bunch. We also had them help pick up parts and let me use the work shop manual to put our belt back on.
So I echo all you say - Thanks Coen, what a top place to need some help

Really.. Well - there are a few others in your predicament then - bummer. Sorry just assumed it was you. Glad you guy are OK though. The other lot also had the camper come away from the springs. Not sue how though.

Great to hear no one was hurt.

Gday Mate Great that no one was hurt. Hope your insurance coughs up no hassles  Phil

Glad no one was hurt. That is a bummer of a way for your trip to end. Hope all goes through with your insurance. Great story on the helpful people of Coen.

Wow, lucky the camper didn't take the car over with it. What did Pioneer say?
-
That's a bummer, Main thing is no one was hurt.
Great to hear there are still some good people in this this country.
Looking at the pic's , it amazes me the chunk of the drawbar. Looks to be one of the larger ones. (size wise)
Then looking at the weld area around the stub axle, they seem to have gone the other way. (very small weld area)
-

I thought the car was going over for a moment, I have sent pics of the dodgy welds and spoken to Pioneer and not much joy there, it's out of warranty and they have got there money!

Yeah a real dodgy weld job, makes me as mad as hell when I look at em.
-
That must be hugely disappointing for you. Can you pick up a rent-a-camper in Cairns and have another crack?

That's the plan Mate, as soon as I know what's going to happen with my camper were off for another go.
-
In 09, I stopped at Coen for fuel and lunch, I thought it was a nice little community, every one smiled and should be proud of the level of customer service offered, it was far better than most of the big towns and cities. I'll be stopping there next trip too, just to spend some money there, my tourist dollar helps the whole community prosper. ;D it was good that you all escaped without injury.

sad how so many companies have that attitude...

Good to read stories like this. Will be travelling to the cape in just over a week so will be sure to stop at the cafe in coen. Interesting reading the roxby downs story. Having lived in roxby for 12 yrs some 13 yrs ago and being a member of the local volunteer fire brigade , many trips to collect roll overs etc on the oodnadatta track took place. Many of these events were tragic enough but extremely rewarding with the praise from the people involved. Quite a few sad memories of some of those incidents but won't go into those. We pray we won't require the assistance of kind hearted people like those of Coen in the next few weeks.

Exact same thing happened to this person's Pioneer camper near Warburton WA

Thanks for the offer Mark, we have leased an apartment in Port Douglas for three months as I think it may take this long to get a result, can't think of a better place to hold up for three months- FNQ just love it.
Once again thanks for the offer :cup:

Don't suppose you know how long ago it was that this one happened? I'm not a member on that forum so can't ask questions and have I got a lot of Questions for MR PIONEER.
Cheers
Peter

The date on the post was only a day ago.
-
Peter,
I would be sending a PM to one of the moderators at Pradopoint asking for the Guy with the Pioneer trailer who suffered the same problem to contact you.
If you both approach them with the same problem, then they would have to come to the party.

Got word from the insurance assessor that they have written my Camper Trailer off, now the search is on for another.

You going to replace it with the same camper?
-
You going to replace it with the same camper?
Not sure what I will replace it with as yet, I do know it won't be a Pioneer, real keen on the KK
-
Cozzie see if you can take gear off the old camper.

Got most of it my gear out of it, going to get my dinghy and folding boat trailer off it on Monday

Good to see that the insurance is sorted out now Pete.
At least that gives you a chance to get on with your life.
It sounds like there should be a recall on all that model trailer because of serious safety issues.
I wouldn't like to be travelling past you when that happened. It could have been a really serious accident with loss of life.
cheers

I agree Dave he they should do a recall, I have informed the owner of Pioneer and sent him photos of both mine and the other Pioneer camper that came to grief in near the same way as my Pioneer, apparently he is in the process of selling out to an eastern states company, I guess they are left holding the baby now, I can't even begin to imagine what would have happened if we were travelling at speed on a sealed road.
Hope Silverton goes real good for ya Mate I'm sure it will.

Interesting isn't it.
Rumpig had a failure in his KK and they responded quickly and comprehensively, reinforcing their reputation as a maker of quality campers. Pioneer have the opportunity to do the same here, or lose their shirt based on a lack of consumer confidence in their build quality and especially, their lack of commitment to their product. Let's hope they take the better course of action and look into this.
-
G'day Cozzie,
Just wondering where things are at with Pioneer?............. How'd you go chasing up another trailer etc?
Hope all is going well anyway.
-
IIRC he bought a Jayco Swan...
-
The Pioneer was written off by CIL the insurance company and they have paid us out, and as D4D mentioned we have ordered a Jayco, we have rented an apartment in a resort at Port Douglas while we wait for the Jayco to be built, were doing it real tough ;D
Getting real itchy feet though
