Gday, this has probably been done in the past, But
What tyres do you all run on?
i roll on Cooper ST's. 255 75 16.
They replaced my Toyo AT. Personally i have loads more confidence in the dirt and also in the wet stuff.
And Road noise is comparable too!!
Cheers
-
Had Cooper ATRs and did Ok but destroyed them fast. 40000K
Now have MTZ 4 rib, great tire in the mud and on the dirt, useless in the wet, 4wd drift everywhere.
Wear is Ok but will struggle to get 80K out of them.
Noise is acceptable. Certainly compared to my exhaust system
-
I would like to see a Poll attached to this thread if this was possible, with all the tyre brands listed as options.
My Patrol rolls on: BF Goodrich All-terrains (265R75.16) for highway touring
: BF Goodrich Mud-terrains (305R70.16) for off-road touring and play
My Camp-o-matic rolls on: BF Goodrich All-terrains (265R75.16) all the time.

BFG, KM2 mud terrains.
35 x 12.5 x 15..........camper and car.
Traction on dirt / mud / rock /sand is excelent, but in the wet it's not hard to make them break out >:D
Happy with the wear, been to the Cape twice and a fare amount of off road work, no chipping or cuts or flats.
Noise..............can't hear them for the motor ;D
-
BFG's for the Navara all terrains 265/70 r16's :cup:
-
BFG's KM2 muddys for Tassie. 285/75/16's
-
BFG KM2s 33x12.5x15 for road and touring, and 35x12.5x15 Maxxis Creepy Crawlers for Play...

KL71 Kumho's

BFG AT 265/70/17s for highway and limited off road use.
BFG Muds 285/75/16 for the more serious off road stuff!

BFG's KM2 muddys 285/75/16's were put on the Patrol just before the Cape trip this year. I'm wrapped in them. Not as noisy as I thought they would be. The traction is very good off road and very good on the dry blacktop. Waiting for some rain, to see what they are like driving on the wet blacktop.
The CT has BFG 285/75/16 A/T. They came off the patrol and straight onto the CT.
-
Cruiser runs on Wrangler Kevlars in 285/75-16 and camper runs Bridgestone MT 30x9.5-15.

Currently, 285/70R17 Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 Rib. Will go back to BFG Muddies when these wear out......

32" Cooper ST Maxx. The Man loves staring at them ??? They do look good on the ute. And they are relatively quiet.

Yes and no. They have been good but still prefer when I had BFG Muddies....
-
Currently 265/75 MickeyT MTZs but these are just about shot, not sure what I'll go with next to be honest, after the MTZ I am over tyre noise, but I do like the grip they give both offroad and on the tarmac, at this stage the next tyre will probably be BF KM2 muds unless I find a compelling reason to go with something else.
-
MT ATZ 5 RIB - Find them to be a great all round tyre.
Cooper CS4 Touring on the wife's soft roader

BFG KM2's, in probably the smallest size on this forum (245/75r16) ;D. Love them. As the others have said, quiet on road, huge grip, bag out well, love to climb. Have done one wet season with them on, and wet weather grip was ridiculously good for such an open tread. Same tyres on the camper, same size, interchangeable with the car. So far, wearing very well.
The KM2's replaced a set of Maxxis ATs. If anything, I think I had a bit more confidence in fast, loose gravel with the AT's. The KM2's like to fling the gravel away and skate a bit whilst hunting/digging for grip. The AT's seemed to drive over the gravel a bit better. AT's were perfect in the sand too, but so far the KM2's are just as good in that regard, if not better.
I'm too lazy to have two sets of tyres ;D

Pirrelli Scorpion ATR's.
No complaints for what they do which is 90% on-road. Pretty quiet, good in the wet, OK off-road ... at least compared with the diesel engine. Done around 15000kms so far and are just starting to show signs of wear.

We'll see if I've changed my mind after our trip to Lake Eyre in September :D

BFG AT 265/70/16 on the Prado and 245/70(?)/16 for the trailer if they ever arrive!....(265's not enough guard clearance sadly)
If BFG supply doesn't improve I won't use them again - one stuffed carcass and I'd be unable to replace, which is a worry.

-
Just put a set of Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx 265/75/16 on the Hilux.
They look like a very good looking tyre with an extra heavy duty carcass.
Upgraded from Cooper ST in a 245/75/16.
The new ones are very quiet on the road compared to the oldies, plus they fill the front guard out much more.
-
I have used BFG ATs for over 10 years, and think they're fantastic! I was really surprised to read in 4wd Action that they came only 3rd or 4th in a comparo of AT tyres, with the Pirelli Scorpions 1st I think.
I've been getting 80,000 out of each set with ease, and 100K is possible though they're no good for 4wding by that stage.
I'm keen to try KM2s next.
-
We can add a poll. Let me lean on a few of you to list the tyres you want in it and I'll create it.

that there is a joke in itself! We had them in the Ex-mistakes Pathfinder, and they are nothing close to an AT, trillionteen % closer to a HT

After running BFG's in both A/Ts and Muds on previous vehicles, I decided I wanted an agressive A/T somewhat more than the BFG A/T but not a full muddy.
With the common Cooper issues and also not being a mainstream follower I finally came up with some ProComp Extreme A/T's in 265/75 R16 for the Rodeo, so far they have exceeded all expectations with remarkably good performance in the sloppy stuff even out driving a double locked Hilux at LCMP, the wet grip on tarmac is more than I care to push the car and their durability offroad so far is excellent although they havent been out on the gibbers yet. I also got them for a good price and now with 6 (2 spares) they shouldn't need replacing any time soon :cup:

KM2s for me as well, in 235/85/16, 2nd set of these, good grip offroad and very quiet for a mud tyre, only downfall, they don't wear well, I think I got about 45,000ks from the last set.

i have been running the Terra Tracs for the last 2yrs or so, have taken them up the Gibb, Cape Leveque Bungle Bungles as well as heaps of local tracks in both WA and now here in Qld, they have been a great tyre, and now have about 50000k on them apart from a few chips etc from the terrain we have been thru on them they have been a fantastic tyre.
I have been looking at the Trail Digger from Hercules (who make the Terra Trac) and discovered that now all the herc tyres have been bought out by coopers and are now made at the coopers factory in the good old USA, so now i am on the look out for a new tyre,

You seem well versed in this, please tell us more ;D
Don't be shy.
-
Just put some 30 9.5R 15 Terra Trac At's (Hercules) on the Rodeo. $200 fitted. Cant wait 2 get them dirty.
-
picked up some second hand General Grabber AT2 245/75/16. Better than the stock Bridgestones I had. Will test them this weekend.
-
General Grabber's have a very good rep over in the US - seems they're a tyre of choice over there. I didn't know we had them in Aus? Much the same, but to a slightly lesser extent for the Terra Trac's - seems they're very popular in the land of the free as well.
I think both of you (hempo and amaso57) will be very happy with your choices.
Thanks!
Matto :)

BFG Muddies 315/75/16 Just love em this is my 2nd set. 1st set was 285/75/16 I got about 80 000ks from them.
-
Mickey Thompson ATZ 4Rib and MTZ's.
The 4Rib is a brilliant tyre and drive on them most of the time. Drop the pressures and they can take you most places
-
cheers Matto, had them balanced and Tyrepower fella said he doesn't sell many because they are dearer than the Coopers etc. Odd thing with them - 3 were marked Made in USA and two were Made in Mexico. Picked them up on 16x7 black dynamic rims.

Hi all,
MRF Highway LT 750/16 or MRF Super Traction 750/16 depending on the terrain.

I run Goodyear MTR's 285/75/16
I buy em cause I can get 4 for $1000 with the buy 3 get 1 free deal that comes around every so often. and with the goodyear warranty when I stuff one I only pay a % of the new tyre depending on how much tread is left.
They are a softer compond IMHO and do get ripped up on rocky ground ,but for corro work and mud I love em.
I would try the KM2 but only if they offer a tyre protection plan.
Jetcrew :D :D
-
Well I've had a gos run with the MT MTZ over the last 4 years but with a lot of the big tracks done I like the look of the MT ATZ 4 rib for my next tyres which will need to be real soon as after the 10,000K for our Cape Trip just completed there is not a whole lot left of them :D
-
I have 225/75/16 Electra ironman LT66.
Have had them for 6 months, so far so good.

BFG AT's 265/75 R16 on Chappy the Disco.
Wrangler RT/S 265/75 R16 on the CUB and
Dunlop Grandtreks 205/70 R15 and Hankook r06's in 205/70 R15 on the mighty Sporty. :cup:
Why because thats what they came with when purchased apart from the Sporty which had to have two tyres replaced for Rego a couple of years ago.
Want 285 muddies for the Disco (probably in a KM2)
Cub cant go any biger than the 265's and the tyres will last a long time.
Want an aggresive all terrain for the Sporty either in 215 75 or 235 75 when it is time to upgrade.
Cheers, Chris

Maxxis 33 Bighorn
Been running Maxxis for many years now and no complaints
-
Sumitomo Serengeti SL840 33x12.5x15 - on 3rd set over 8 years average 40,000 km per set. Not much in mileage compared to others but it's the price I pay for rubber to do all I want it to do and more.
-
I am running 235/70R 16 A/TS geolanders they have been great tyres on all types of terrain. Would i have them again ? yes
-
Running Maxxis 761's 265/65/17 on the R51 Pathfinder and they seem like a good tyre. Helps when you actually get a good wheel alignment. Went looking for BFG's but decided that it was easier to find a needle in a haystack.
-

Why were you surprised by that, $WDAction have such excellent comparo's >:D
I have been running BFG ATs (285/75 16) for ten years as well and love them. I don't do enough mud work to justify MT's and as a daily driver the AT's perform well in the wet around town for the family when we are not able to be off camping.
-
BFG certainly seem to get a lot of business from us.
Another set of KM2s here, 285/70R17s on the Patrol and the trailer.
Supply is indeed a problem, especially if you damage one or two while out and about. In a pinch you can put any other tyre in the appropriate size on, but certainly not ideal. The good thing is that the KM2s seem to be pretty tough.
I got all eight of mine from the US, even at the latest exchange rate you certainly won't pay more than local even with shipping (just got to watch the $1000k duty threshold), and at least you can have them a week from now rather than six months from now.
The KM2s replaced STTs. I liked the STTs, I love the KM2s. I might try Kumho KL71s next.

Call me Stupid, why is everyone so keen on BFG?

Hey Stupid, ;D
Nah, seriously,
It's a P&^%ing comp. Thats all it is.
I wouldn't put either on my Cruiser, I don't play enough in the mud to warrant having a Mud tyre and Coopers well, I've never tried them, but I've heard mixed stories about them.
I'm happy with my Bridgies(604V), they've served me well.
I also feel, that not every tyre is suited to every vehicle. you can can put Coopers on one vehicle and get completely different results to another, just like you would with Bridgestones. And everyone runs different tyre pressures, I'm happy with 42-44psi in mine, I don't mind the harder rider, others are happy to run 34-36 in theirs, so that changes the life of a tyre as well.
It's also a loyalty thing as well I guess.
Have a good one
-
Cheers, thanks for the reply.
When i was looking to re shoe the PF, i spoke to the guys at my local tyre outlet, his words to me where "there have been a few issues with coopers, but we need to expect that. The more they sell the higher % of market they have meaning that they still have a 3% fail rate, and because there are so many on the market that 3% looks massive"
That make sence??
??? ???
Cheers
-
Coopers are rubbish, I went through 3 sets before I gave up on them, chipping, lugs tearing off, wearing out, the warrenty was the only reason I stuck with them hoping that eventually I would get a good set and they would last.
I wouldn't put Coopers on if you gave them to me >:D

If a company is interested in improving their product, the % failure should decrease as the sales increase. Otherwise they are reinforcing the same mistake.
Typically however companies try to offset the cost of improving engineering/production by spending more on marketing - you know like saying a tyre alone has the capability to pull a semi-trailer out of a bog - or other bs.
-
you know like saying a tyre alone has the capability to pull a semi-trailer out of a bog - or other bs.
Agree, Marketing plays a big part of it as well.
Get people talking about your product enough and the bad points seem to disappear.

I think BFG's have a good name, they seem to last as well. My mate had BFG ATs on his Jeep Wrangler and they were a good tyre. I have coopers ATR on our Rav4 and I have not been happy with the wear rate. The rear tyres have worn VERY quickly in the centre of the tread (and no they arent over inflated) and I think as an AT they are closer to a HT tread pattern. The other gripe I have is that the Cooper tyre warranty only applies if you live in a major city centre. They will not warrant tyre regularly driven on "rough" rural roads, and I thought that was the idea of an "ALL TERRAIN" tyre. ???
I personally run 33" Goodyear Wrangler MTRS on my landcruiser ute, and I have pulled about 60 thou each out of both sets. If I can find the $$$$ I will certainly go with the same again. Like John Laws use to say , "When you're on a good thing, stick to it!"
Cheers Chippy :D

Bridgstone Duelers 694 AT in LT construction and run them at tyre placard pressure on the Rodeo - dirt - gibber -mud -and asphalt , we get it all just to go for a grocery shoping trip of a 250klm round trip so who's going to continually change pressures ? 5 wheel rotate every 10 thou or so , 50 thou so far and recon will get another 20/25 thou before getting to wear marks,,,, Put same on wifes Jeep Cheerokee after Coopers only lasted 30 thou due to chipping and lugs failing , Coopers warranty not worth the toilet paper its printed on.
-
mate of mine was declined warranty because they reckened he was not running the right pressure ???
They tried that on with us too, I told them I run the manufacturers recommended pressures for my vehicle and offroad pressures recommended by the tyre outlet that Cooper recommended, you can check the pressure now if you like, his reply was, Oh, OK, (STs)that was 6000ks, they replaced them no questions asked with STCs.
The second time I brought the car in to have the tyres checked(15,000ks) they said, they don't look that bad, when I pointed out the cracking at the base of the lugs, his reply was (and I quote) "it only seems to be on a few, not realy enough to replace them"WTF??
We did a high country trip, then took the car back with complete lugs torn off, around 5000ks later, apparently that was enough >:D they were replaced with STTs, a slight cost to us because of the milage we had done ???
Never again, I replaced the STTs with 25,000ks on them, they had lugs missing and further chipping and cracking, to dangerous to continue with them, I went to Nankang Mudstars as they were cheap and I needed tyres for our upcoming trip.

The Ssangyong runs 18" tyres
I measured their height compared to a Nissan Patrol with Bridgestone Dueler A/T's and found mine were a bit taller ;D
-
I am sure some of the Cooper high end tyres are alright (although you do hear bad stories about them as well) but they also make a heap of low end garbage and people just lump them all in as one. My old man for instance, read a 4wd action review that said coopers were the best so just went and bought the cheapest coopers, which are actually garbage.
As for me I have to good of a run out of my BFG AT's to change as they are a big investment so you don't want to buy duds so I will stay with them.
-

Talkin with Awill4x4 his new Paj had 18's to but theres no selection of decent tyres for them... he has gone 17's.. what tyres would you change to, or run them out first?

250klm round trip so who's going to continually change pressures ? 5 wheel rotate every 10 thou or so
Don't blame ya for not changing pressures. But the key is to rotate.
I do every oil change(5000k) maybe a little to often, who knows.
I first noticed this when I first had the new rubber put on. After 10000k's of towing and a fair bit of weight in the back I measured the tread depth and the rears had worn a Tad more that the fronts. So I started to change them every 5000k's and they are wearing the same now.

BFG just seem to be very well proven, and most people who try them seem to stay with them. I might change to Kumhos simply because they are also known to be a good tyre and you might as well try different options.
I got KM2 because Mrs Squalo wanted quieter tyres, and the KM2 is comparable to an AT despite being a brilliant mud tyre.
I quite liked my STTs, so have nothing against Cooper at all - they held up well to some severe offroad (ab)use while playing at Glasshouse Mountains. They were totally dead at 40,000km though. And overall they just aren't as good as the KM2s.
-
I run Cooper ST's on the cruiser 285/75R16,to be honest they were on it when i purchased it..I had ran Goodyear MTR's on my old cruiser and found i didnt do enough off road stuff to warrant the MTR's..I don't have a problem with the Coopers and haven't found any damage of the tread as yet but will keep my eye on them from what i've read here..The camper run's a set of Kuhmo ATR i think but cant recall the actual size?maybe 235/75R15???
-
I've had no problems with the Coopers ST 285/75R16. The first set did 80k on one pair and 90k on the other pair. That included the GRR twice, the Tanami and the Vic high country with everything in between. Sure I had chips out of lugs and the odd crack but nothing to render the tyre unserviceable. It's also the sort of wear I would expect from use on those kind of roads. So I've stuck with them as I think that they provided very good value for money an excellent balance between wear/ride/grip qualities. Now 20k into the new set with no problems. I'm pretty religious about balancing, rotation and pressures, though.
I hear bad stories and good stories about Coopers, but then I do hear them about most brands. Some of the bad stories I sympathise with, some I do not (particularly those about tyre damage after having been flogged on proper low range tracks - tyres are a consumable item and the harder they are used the faster they will be consumed). The 100 series had Kumhos fitted when I bought it but I could never get them properly balanced. Have had no such trouble with the Coopers.
Like the Toyota/Nissan debate, it's each to their own...
-
We run BFG 265/75/16 on the Prado and the camper trailer, they have over 50K on them now and still a fair bit to go wear wise yet. Also makes it easier, as they are all interchangable between the vehicle and camper trailer, they have the odd cut and chip out of them but nothing real bad just normal wear and tear for off road tyres as far as I'm concerned,
cheers Andy

Run Maxxis 751 Bravo on the Rodeo Ute and Sava RV on the camper, so far happy..but then I'm not an aggressive driver and my vehicle and camper don't get the punishment of trips like the Cape York Run....so as they say horses for courses..Ive had heavy lug tyres in the past but have found them to noisy on the bitumen..as such happy with the Maxxis..
