Title: Mine Workers.
Post by: Barrabart on December 12, 2010, 12:31:54 AM
G'day all,

Just wondering how many of you on here are working or have worked in the mining game and if so where abouts, just thought it might be interesting, who knows a few of us might have worked in the same places.

I'll start it off,

Charters Towers Gold Mine, Charters Towers
Thalanga Copper Mine, Charters Towers
Selwyn Copper Mine, Cloncurry
Pajingo Gold Mine, Charters Towers
Sepon Copper Mine, Laos
Lihir Gold Mine, PNG

I've thrown this topic up on another couple of sites, always amazes me who's worked where, sometimes people have been on the same mine site and not even known each other, or maybe, they've tried to forget, haha.

Catch ya's later.

Presently working for Swick Mining Services, doing field service on diamond drills underground, based at Cosmos Nickel mine (Xstrata) just north of Leinster. Travel to Jundee (Newmont), Agnew (Goldfields), Sinclair (Xstrata) and Gwalia (St Barbaras) on a regular basis. Previous to that I was based in Kambalda doing the same thing but moved to Perth just over 12 months ago.  The BOSS works for Thundelarra explorations in Perth but was working at St Ives for Goldfields when we were Kambalda based.

Freeport is a huge operation I haven't been up to Grasberg for over a year now so it would only be getting bigger. Its an incredible place up there. They were moving around 700 000 tons of dirt a day.

Being a contractor I get to see a lot of places. I could list all the sites that I have worked at but it would take up way to much time. One nice advantage of the job is I get to see the a fair part of the world.

Paul,

I look after the the processing side, they move approx 200,000t of concentrate per day and make $300 per second. They are ramping up for the block caving of the underground that will make grasberg look small.

Gday All,
I've been in the Agricultural sector for 20 years and the last 10 years operating an Ag contracting business. We make pretty good money but the spiralling cost of replacement machinery  and the constant chasing money from clients has me thinking of a complete career change.
Ive  been thinking of maybe trying to get a job in the mining sector as a machine operator as I operate large machinery (prime movers, loaders, tractors etc) on a daily basis. Although nothing as big as the mining gear believe I would adapt quickly.

What tickets/qualifications would help me gain employment in the industry?
Whats the best way to get a foot in the door?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Almost got a job cataloging at the Sepon Copper Mine, Laos but South Africa won out instead. Didn't like the idea of 4 weeks with no contact with the outside world...

Done a fair bit of cataloguing for mines but never ventured out of the office in Sydney to do them, cheaper to shift data to the expert than the expert to the data.

I wouldn't mind a change, don't get me wrong, i love Live Line, but we don't seem to do enough of it. Contractors make alot more, but talking to the boys from Thiess, they make alot of sacrifices too. Our apprentice came from the mines, they make the same or more there with a family friendly roster. I wouldn't mind learning how to drive a few machines, or even a whole new trade, you can't have too many qualifications i reckon

I lived and grew up in Weipa for 10 years, and did my apprenticeship there as a Fitter and Turner for Comalco during the last 4 of those 10, after leaving school, so every time i go back to Cape York Peninsular,, i,m not only heading back to home turf , its also a massive, personal trip down memory lane for me. While the drive to "The Tip", may be new to so many My Swaggers,, i can compare the road differences between recent and what it used to be like, in the early 1970,s.  ;D

Worked for Rio Tinto Aluminium in Weipa (was Comalco when I started) for just over 20 years.  We left in December to the Cooroibah on the Sunshine Coast.  Seen the best of the Cape, from the fishing to the camping and the people.  The wife is still working for Rio a couple of days in Brissie and the rest she can work from home.

Working for a mining company has been good for us and I have lasting memories.

Russell.

Hey all,
i had 21 odd years in the Australian Army, decided i'd enough and gave the mining industry a crack about 7 years back, work for xstrata in the Hunter Valley, (open cut coal), and now operate, dozers, graders, loaders, trucks, etc, great job, nite shift sux, but the roster makes up for it, and as a bonus provides me and the family with plenty of time for campin, yeah ha i say.

PS money is great to.
