Camper Trailer Insurance
« on: October 22, 2010, 02:47:04 PM »
Just thought I would share it may be of help to others.  Today I spent on phone ringing around getting quotes for insurance after ringing about 10 companies these were the best 3.  Take in to account though I insured my camper trailer for $10,000.  The price to get exactly what I have now.
All three of these companies offered full comprehensive, fire theft and accident as well as accidental damage they each cover for towing, emergency accomodation etc.  It was hard for me to decide out of the 3 as they were all close in price ranging between $185 - $285.  I did however settle for Suncorp as that is who I have other insurance with and they offer a discount for multiple premiums as did the other companies.

CIL - automatically offer $1000 contents insurance, and new for old for first year $200 excess
NRMA - automatically offer $1000 contents insurance, and new for old first year $200 excess
Suncorp - autotmatically offer $500 contents (but you can upgrade this) new for old for first 2 years if you are the first registered owner $150 excess

Hope this may help someone if they are looking for CT insurance it could be a starting point.

Good post,
i just went through the same process and found that alot of the policies were identical.
In the end it came down to CIL and QBE who i have another policy with so the loyalty discount got them over the line...

Good Post Dragonsgirl.

I might also throw this in for discussion (yep I have a bit of insurance in my varied background).

CIL do a "new for new" in the first year ... full replacement with a new camper.  Not all of them did this at the time I took out my insurance.  Just something to think about if you buy new.

Insurance is a peace of mind thing for me.  This way I know it's covered no matter where I am, what it's doing, or even if it's sitting at home making sure my puppies behave.

We just insured ours (2010 customline) with cil,  Just received the pds today.  While I was researching cil,  I found out they are joined with vero, the same insurer we have our house and car through.

look at what they will do if you are stuck at the cape. Cil will cover the transport cost from the cape where most companies will only cover the first 100 klms.

So no companies do cover like Club Marine do for boats where you can nominate months of the year you actually use it?
Thus reducing your premium ..... bugger

We used them when we hired out campers that went to the Cape. It costs about a $1000 to bring a camper back from Coen that is only half way up the cape. Most insurance companies will only cover the first 100klms.

After comparing different insurance companies for a while we chose RAA

premium $86

contents $2000

recovery of CT up to $400

relocation of CT up to $400

emergency repair up to $800

accommodation for 4 nights and up to $400

liability $20,000,000

new for old first 2 years (from first rego)

also cover when driving off road (no restrictions)

I found that some companies would not pay out on contents if the walls are made of canvas or any other type of cloth or material  ??? ??? (pretty useless for the mojority of CT's)

Our regular insurer Allianz is one of these but they will cover our camping equipment on our Home & Contents policy ??? ??? ???

We have used the same insurance broker for 20+ years & he told us that CIL have the best policy wording by far compared to other companies.  When we insured with CIL they sent us a discount card, the discounts we have received at caravan parks etc have almost paid for our insurance.

We went with CIL as they cover all gazetted roads including dirt, cover contents in canvas and pay out unless canvas is slashed, $1000 contents cover and less than $50 for each extra $1000, agreed value, no extra for pay by the month. Their travel saver card is handy as well ;)

We live in ours, so need best coverage.

My situation is that I'm purchasing a new Ultimate Xplor for pickup next Feb/Mar 2014, live in the ACT, not impacted by age or driver experience excesses etc.  Looking at the numerous threads on MySwag you end up seeing the most recommendations for CIL, TCIS, AAMI and State Motoring Associations - NRMA, RACV etc.  So, I concentrated on those first three plus NRMA since I live in the ACT. All four companies understood what a camper trailer is and some even define them in their PDS.  They still use the term caravan throughout the policies though.

First, everybody will have differing priorities, campers and expectations regarding Insurance.  So, my two bits worth applies to my situation.

My top priority is for coverage 'new for old' since I am purchasing a brand spanking new Xplor.  This moved me towards the NRMA and CIL policies as they cover 'new for old' for two years compared to only one year for AAMI and TCIS.

NRMA and CIL both require optional cover for an Annex.

While CIL details their contents cover very well, there are a lot of limits.  Both companies insured up to a maximum of $1000 total; however, CIL has limits in certain areas.  A higher cover is available as an option for both.

Where CIL and NRMA differ markedly is in the area of Excesses (aside from age and experience).  NRMA has two excesses - Basic $200 and Hail or Cyclone $200.  However CIL has four types of excesses - Basic Caravan $200, Basic Annex $200, Off-road $200 and Transportation $100.  So in the case of CIL if you are off-road (which is where we like to be), have a loss or damage to the camper and requires transportation, your starting excess totals $500!!

Emergency accommodation - CIL up to $100/day for a maximum of $500.  NRMA is up to $100/day for a maximum of seven days ($700).

So for my situation the NRMA policy seems to provide more for what I require.

Finally, the policy costs for 12 months cover for my situation. CIL $920 and NRMA $850.

Once the Xplor is over two years old and the 'new for old' is no longer required, I'll probably go with either AAMI (have other policies with them) or TCIS.  TCIS was $715 and AAMI $814.

How do people go getting insurance on a homemade camper. I asked Suncorp (who we have most other stuff with) and they said I need to go to an evaluation center before they will insure us. Anyone had any experience with this or otherwise?
