That was in the days of bias ply tyres. Yes, you would increase pressure to help the tyres survive getting sidewall cuts. All changed when we went to Radial ply tyres. Now we drop pressure to survive getting sidewall cuts.

Dan.
Spot on! The old cross plies were still pretty tough.

And pinch flats on the tubes. Let them down enough to drive on sand and the stupid things wouldn’t go round corners either haha. It wasn’t like any of them had a heap of HP for the soft sand so it was always a gamble.

PDR Update 22/4:
Road Open with Caution due to Water over the Archer River Crossing.
Peninsula Developmental Road 4WD only, recommended High Clearance Vehicles due to Rough surface & boggy conditions.
Subject to a 5 tonne GVM limit
PLEASE DRIVE TO CONDITIONS

Hi Tony - we are currently in Chillagoe and will be in Cooktown by mid week hoping to head to the Cape.

The QLD Traffic app still shows the PDR as being closed to thru traffic. Does this mean as travellers we can’t head north or should it be no trouble??

I am also assuming the OTL will be a no go this early in the season.

Cheers.

From what I can see the roads are all open, limited to 5T

We're heading off on Wednesday and planning to do a lot of what the Cape has to offer. Got 7 weeks to see it so should be right by the time we get there (ex-Melb)

Quick update - we are in Weipa and the PDR is not too bad.  A few washouts to look out for and most are well signposted.  We won't be doing the whole OTL this trip but will update on the conditions for the sections we go and have a look at.

Cheers

If cyclone 'Ann' stays on current path the Cape road could be closed again soon.

The cyclone is no more... there will be some rain from the system, but it is unlikely to have any significant effect on any of the roads up here as we haven’t had rain for around a month now.

Keep making your plans!
