Insurance Renewal
« on: August 14, 2018, 08:38:54 AM »
Having search the web for information and most seems to be out of date in regard to insurance for the Patrol and Camper Trailer.

We just got the renewal from Suncorp and our cover went down by $4000 and the premium rose by $100.  I rang them to enquire why this was so, and they said that based on the statistics of the bureau of Meteorology that we were now susceptible to fires.   WTF, we live in tropical Cairns - More likely to be blown away and in a fire. They wouldn't budge on the premium so I told them we may look elsewhere.

We started getting quotes from other like Budget etc but most wont insure modified vehicles because of the DP CHIP or the camper trailer.

Anyone got any suggest on good current insurers? for the 2007 Patrol and New Camper Trailer?

Thanks in advance.

I have been with Suncorp for around 20 years now and have never faulted them. Yes sometimes they need a reminder about what they have changed but they usually come to the party changing it back. I believe insurance companies are like health insurance. It’s better of staying with the same company. Sometimes they look after you and sometimes you can’t beat the rules and regulations but it usually works out in the end.

I found cil to be similar or same price as suncorp, but cil had some better conditions with regards to replacement value and new for old

+1 for Shannons - we have 2x cars, 1x motorbike and the house contents (renters) with them. Camper trailer will move next year to someone else, and the last motorbike will come over to Shannons as well in time.

The best thing is that they just bundle all your vehicle premiums into one payment, so that makes managing it easier...

Also your coverage will drop in nearly every year as the assets depreciate - the exception is when you're running a classic (I think in a few months time, I'm going to be upping the Land Cruiser HJ45 to about $10k looking at prices)

Yep. Shannons are 100% owned by Suncorp. As is GIO, APIA and AAMI.

Just looking for some help.
I'm in the process of building a HDJ105 Turbo.  Something Toyota never introduced into Australia.
Not even sure they offered it elsewhere, but still.
The process so far is, dropping a 1998 Diesel turbo into a 2001 body with Auto box.
It's just a bolt up assembly from all Toyota parts.  The diesel is still ADR approved until 2002, so that isn't an issue either.
So being as it's a special build, I'm wondering if there's any Insurance out there that's going to be reasonable for my situation.
Currently have RACV roadside Comprehensive and CGU full Comprehensive for the vehicle.
Which, as said, depreciates the value every year.  And whilst they're happy to accept the risk on the N/A 4.2, as it was produced by Toyota.
I'm sure they'd wipe it if anything was claimed with it as a Turbo.
I was hoping to piggy back on this thread, if that's ok.

I went with racq for the camper. From memory CIL don't cover actions of salt water etc so if you tow on a beach it is an issue.

Thanks all,

For the Patrol we went to Bingle insurance (Nice Name). Their reviews seemed pretty good and their is no problems with the modifications and DChip.  It was all pretty easy and a lot cheaper than Suncorp. But what is strange Bingle is a part of the Suncorp group.

Still review insurance for the camper and will most probably look at RACQ.

After your discussion here I called Shannon's and resulted in a Quote for sight unseen value of $25,000 for a Turbo'd 105 (2001) at
$1,179.00 for 12 Months or $98.32 a month.  Excess of $650.00
Free glass replacement each 12 months.
Will cover remote recovery, as long as the cost of the recovery doesn't exceed the value of the policy.
If it does, they write-off the vehicle.
Quote is good for 12 months, so hypothetically I could ring again in 11 months time and they'd be bound by it.
Unless there was a cheaper option in their plans, and I decided on that.

They come up with all sorts of reasons why a quote can or will be so dear, but my "old" 2009 200 series is $800 for insured value of $50,000....( $650 excess ) which I thought was dear....but still at twice the value of your 100 series ??

I've never had glass replacement, and have never done a windscreen in 40 yrs, so it's another policy cost you have to weigh up.

I liken them to banks.....whinge about how tuff they're doing it....but still post record profits for the year ??

Thanks Gronk.  His problem was, 'the vehicle isn't standard, you won't find another one like it out there.  So it's hard to actually put a value on it'.
