What’s your ancestry DNA?
« on: January 28, 2018, 10:55:48 AM »
Just saw the add on tv and began to wonder if we know our heritage which could make for some great campfire conversation.

From research to date, it turns out I’m not actually from Mordor or the Shire, in actual fact running through these veins is Scottish, Irish and French blood. So depending on the day, you could get a different personality and explains why I like dancing around a campfire🕺🕺🕺

My Scottish ancestors came by boat into Newcastle and settled in the hunter and New England region and one of them married into a French Jeweller family in Sydney before settling around Southern NSW/Corryong/Beechworth area.
My Irish ancestors were shipped by boat to van diemans land and became constabulary as a result of good behaviour and standing before moving to Goulbourn and the southern highlands.

Mine arrived on the same boat trip, I'm assured he had a bunk on the lower decks.
He happened to be a black African, and married the daughter of another convict couple a black negro American and his Irish wife.

I got into the family tree a few years ago to try and pull all the bits and pieces together before it was lost.  I found it was quite interesting. Also uncovered a few scandles.
Most of mine arrived early to mid 1800’s with one 1 the late 1800’s
1 Welch for the surname.  A bit over half were poor Irish the rest were English with one token convict who married someone we can’t track, likely a convict.

After being Medically Retired I did get into the Family Tree thing a bit.  Gave me something to do mainly.  Anyhow trace it all back on my side and pretty boring really, all bloody whinging poms with the odd convict (not first fleeters) thrown into the mix.  The Family name I can trace back to Staffordshire and my Grandfather coming out from Sunderland to Australia.  On my Mums side, it as from Warwickshire.  But I have Ancestors scattered over most of England.

In Australia, Dad's side is mainly New South Wales, while Mum's side is a mix of South Australia but mostly New South Wales.  Pretty boring really.

My wife is a bit more mixed.  Again predominately English with a little branch of German and Danish and again arriving in Australia via South Australia and mainly New South Wales.

Last year our son and daughter in law had our first grandchild so I bought my boy a dna kit.  No real surprises.  English with the usual Viking mix and a trace of german.
Cheers

Al and/or Jan

I was Born in Ramsgate, Dad in Gillingham, we lived in Maidstone for a bit (apparently) Grandad was born in India, but moved to England at the age of 26, and was a copper in Maidstone (I think). The pubs were all over the place.

From many reports I am also from Kent.
I get called that a fair bit but for some reason they spell it slightly different. They use C for the first letter and have a different vowel.
But Kent plus some Irish and Scottish and touch of Wales plus other Brit areas is my ancestry. My folks got around a lot but apparently weren't Gypsy's.
