As a driver of a semi and b-doubles, I am astounded every day by peoples attitudes and behaviours around our heavy vehicles. Now, I know there are rogue truck drivers around, but from my experience light vehicle drivers are the worst offenders for doing silly and unnecessary things around me. At 40+ ton as a single and 60+ ton as a double they are messing with something that will destroy them if it all turns to poo. I could list a thousand things I have seen that make me shake my head in disbelief.
How about we start with the basics. Learn to respect our fellow road users. Have a thought for that truck driver beside you and how your actions affect what he may have to do to compensate for your stuff up. We all want to go home in one piece to our families.

Eliminates any chance of an emergency move by the truck.
Friggin great duel wheels, spinning around within metres of their car.... I just don't get it.

I've always tried to give truckies the respect they deserve, telling the wife as well, either sit behind them or pass them.

Give them space, 60 tonne vs a micro hatch will always end badly for one of them.

I am more than happy to sit behind a truck (naturally at a safe distance in case of a mishap). They generally sit right on the speed limit and sometimes I,ll have a chat on the radio. Have seen a few idiot truck drivers...but way more morons who shouldn't be driving on the road!  Respect for each other and knowing when its is safe or unsafe to overtake will save more lives. I get really pissed off seeing idiots overtaking in highly dangerous places.

One of the stupidest things I've had happen to me was west of Rockhampton. Raining pretty solidly. Huge spray coming of the truck. Cruising at a few below the limit. Rounding a long, gentle left hand bend on double white lines. Heard a call on the 2 way "Coming round ya big fella". Didn't even raise an eyebrow because I thought that he couldn't possibly talking to me. Well, F@#k me out of the spray emerges a dual cab Hilux passing me. Mid bend, in the rain on double whites. So I call this bloke up and alert him to the fact he might be a bit of a retarded muppet. His reply was "Don't stress mate. Plenty of room for both of us. It's all good". A few more colourful words were exchanged and he disappeared into the distance. Could not believe what I had just seen.
All of our trucks now have cameras, data system and tablet for electronic logbook. Whilst some drivers kicked up a big stink over it, I was all for it. We have an event button to send instant video back to head office and I reckon I could press it several times a day if I really wanted to. I do activate it just so head office can see what we are putting up with on the roads.

I've always respected the job that truck drivers do and it comes as a genuine surprise when very occasionally you see one do something stupid.  I try to give them space, which includes being able to tow at a reasonable speed.

Is that the one where the mid coast transport double just pushed the guy off the road?  As an ex long haul driver (24+ years ago when I was very single) I was horrified at that.

I think most truckies at some stage deserve a medal for not killing entire families due to the stupidity of other motorists.  As an observation though, the "457 steerers" are nowhere near as competent behind the wheel as the Aussies and Europeans.  Having mates still in the industry, they tell me it's these guys who have the bad safety records because they're happy to do whatever it takes to get a load somewhere on time

Agree with the sentiment, but It's hardly just a truck thing...try driving a 4wd towing a work trailer in big city traffic each day, the amount of wankers that cut into the safe space you leave infront of you is beyond frustrating...pretty much the same stupidity truckies complain about dealing with daily.....this is why i now have a dashcam in my vehicle.

I drive to work on a truck route most days and I also see some stupid things from all drivers. My pet peeve is when the 60T b-double driver sits in the right lane to pass his mate in the left lane as he's going 1km/h faster and wants to keep a constant speed.

Agreed, I don't assume that a truck driver is any more responsible or courteous on the road than any other driver, an attitude that has come from ample experience. Couldn't count the number of times a truckie has made overtaking far more dangerous by putting their foot down as I'm trying to overtake.

I find most truck drivers to be good, some even slow down when passing on gravel roads, then there's those that don't.
Then there's the road trains, again many will pull over and slow down, then there's the occasional one or two I seem to
encounter on each trip going flat chat around sweeping bends where the last trailer swings out over the center line and forces
me to head bush, on the last trip it was a steep embankment with a near vertical drop over the side leading up to a bridge
with armco, how the trailer missed the van and I missed the armco could be considerd a miracle! We only have a small Vista
if it was a large van it wouldn't be here now. I cringe these days whenever we pass a road train on a sweeping bend just
waiting for that last trailer to drift across.

Like all things there's a lot of good considerate truck drivers out there then there's a few that aren't, same with car drivers,
but as there a lot more cars on the road than trucks one expects to see more idiot car drivers!

I watched the news the other night, a cyclist was saying how scared he was to ride on a public road...... So Don't.
I'm Shit scared of heights, so I don't bungee jump, skydive or Shit like that.

The Aborigines wanted sorry and they got it, now they want Australia day changed, more land rights, sacred sites, the rock the list goes on.

The gays want to be treated like normal folk, be able to marry and all the rest of it. Well, don't parade ya bare arse down a Sydney street at the Mardi Gra

Some deaf chick wants a "signer" supplied at a concert so she can hear in her own way.

It never ends, nobody is happy with what they have anymore and want it all on a fukkin silver platter and then bitch its not good enough.

I'm pretty much over the lot of 'em...... 

On a happy note, I got a mention in the Australia Day Awards up here too.
I turned up there to mow this morning and the head guru guy called out my first name, the name of my business and told me to fukk off and mow some other time. 
About the best I could ever hope for really.

No argument from me. To put simply, don't make allowances for trucks and suffer the consequences.
I find that comment very narrow minded and dangerous. If your not prepared to make allowances for a 63t B double, which will cause you serious harm or death, what else do you not make allowances for? Children in school zones? Elderly crossing the street? Just saying........

I had a situation where this could have failed.

I had a 20ft container of marble slabs on from Italy heading down Canterbury Rd. It was a regular stupid heavy load heading to Padstow...
Coming to a set of lights, there was a school group at the lights that had hit the pedestrian button...
Doin my best to stop in good time, thought I had this all under control when some ****tard decided that he had to be in my lane at the lights (its a 2 lane road each way for those that dont know) - as did his mate...
So it went from not much to worry bout to code brown in an instant.. Grabbed the horn, the teacher blocked the kids from crossing road any further, and the 2 ****tards shot off through the red light with I hope a little poo in their pants with the teacher giving them a mouthful of abuse..
I managed to stop fine, teacher shook his head and all was good.. but if I'd have hit those cars, with a bunch of 20+ kids crossing the lights - all could have been different and what i'd have had to live with

I don't miss driving for a living, was worse doing tanker work. Some of the Shit I see daily on the road just makes me cringe. Mostly seems to be people who havent grown up in this country seeing how things work. or P plate girls in tiny cars on the phone texting

Hi Cb, Yes I bet you have seen some wallies alright, I drove a UD tandem tipper for three years locally around Gympie, And they had good brakes but not fantastic brakes so I would leave a fair distance between me and the car in front and some wally would pass me every time and cut in front of me, I nearly turned a couple of 4 doors into utes, But there is a few Cowboys truck drivers on the roads still as you say, As when I head north up the cape with my 5m tinny in tow I am loaded the tinny loaded and I am sitting on the the speed limit, The amount of trucks that sit right up my ass I loose count of,  98% of the time I see them coming and call them and let them go, Fire truck it Shits me when they sit so close, Theres no need for it, Craig

Pass a truck on an uphill doing the speed limit, get that same truck all the way up my ass coming down the other side of the hill at the same speed limit. Pretty sure a lot of us are younger and of the same opinion... I'm 44, and most of my mates are similar age, and we're all cut from the same cloth...

We all own million dollar plus homes from working our fukking rings off and upgrading our properties to make the most of growing real estate markets, and we're all completely non-sympathetic to Gen Y-Me.

Not a single one of us has ever had a handout aside from our school fees being paid by our parents, and our kids are all being bought up to think the way we do

it defies logic eh! Like parking assist - I thought reverse parking was in your driving test.. if you cant do it you dont get a ****in license. They are aiming for "new Australians" who have no idea about courtesy or now you should drive in traffic in AU... There was a classic on one of the cop shows other night, a "new Australian" whose cousin (or bought it in Box Hill) I guess must have done the license test cause this thing was clueless - the cops pulled up behind it, and hit the lights nad siren - it pulled over and then drove off again - with the cops following with lights and sirens going for a good minute !!!! Pulled up and she said something like i didnt know what you wanted me to do...  The cop almost didnt want her to drive off saying he didnt think she understood the road rules... Well ****in DER mate
