What's your dollar spend per day?
« on: December 29, 2017, 09:57:13 AM »
Hi everyone, I'm sure we've all done the exercise, particularly on those longer trips but what is your average dollar spend per day, including everything you spend on.
Fuel, food, site fees, admissions, repairs, insurance, misc etc.
We have done a few 10 to 12 day trips with not too much travelling and are running at about $90- 100 per day.

We're budgeting $150 a day, or even up to $180...

2 pax, diesel ute 4wd, 12' van...

That's to cover everything:
Contingency fund for on the road repair, if needed..
Dinner out - (local RSL etc).
Bought lunches on the road.
Snacks, coffees.
Fuel
Overnight fees.
Tours as needed.
Souvenirs, bits and bobs, as needed..

I can honestly say I have never sat down and fully worked out what we spend,  and I have absolutely no idea what each trip cost us, let alone what each daily cost worked out to be. I have no idea how many litres per klm my 4wd uses, I just know roughly how far I get before I need to refuel again. We did get home from Cape York in 2006 with no money in our bank account and a few overdue bills that needed paying, so not the best financial planning on our behalf...was a great trip though...lol

This is one of my jobs for the new year.  I have a 1st cut of a spread sheet atm.  Rough itinerary that produces klms and nights that will feed in to fuel, camp fees and food estimates

Clearly there are huge variations depending on how you travel.

I wonder if I will get a better estimate than the $150 - $180 per day mentioned  ???

I normally do not take food and grog into account when going away , as we gotta eat at home and I don't normally drink more when away .
So the extra costing that I work on is fuel ( I know roughly how far and how much fuel ), park fees ( either caravan parks or national parks- paid for before going away most times ), Boat fuel and yabbie/fish bait, tours ( normally booked and paid for before going away)meals in restaurants/cafes .

Hi Pottsy, When the wife and I and our 4 kids from 10 to 18 go away up two 12 days it costs us around $450 a day thats food, accommodation in Cabins or units, attractions, I chopper ride for our mob if we do one, But we pay the insurance and redgo before we go and all maintenance is done before we go But we take extra cash if we need it, But If my mate and I go away say up to Cape York for a month fishing at Pennefather River, it cost less than $100 a day for fuel up and back and food and outboard fuel, But all maintenance is done on the 4wd and boat, motor and trailer before we go, and tires and spares are bought well before the trip, but I still take extra money incase we need it, Craig

Back in my previous life I knew of a journo  who used his long service leave to take the wife and kids from WA to the Cape with all the attractions in between.

He kept a record   of every dollar spent on the trip and wrote about it in a series of articles from the travel pages in the paper.

Riveting read that was. Much  about how much things cost rather what a great experience it was.

When he returned to work he was promoted to a management position with responsibility for budgets! The bosses knew a bean  counter when they saw one.

I never keep a record of my costs except for fuel and that is only because I log that as a means of keeping track of distances travelled.

As a solo traveller I don't spend much,  probably similar to at home  and with a bit extra because of a few nights of pub meals and accomodation. Probably around  $100 a day (plus fuel which is a variable) but with spouse and kids in tow that would skyrocket I guess.

It’s not hard to figure out total spend on a holiday. We take out either $500 or $1000 at the start of the trip depending on where we are going.  Give half to the misses the rest is spent on the card. Tally it all up at the end of the trip

So no need to write down every single $ spent

A holiday is like going out for dinner.
If you need to look at the price list instead of the tucker available,
You shouldn't be there.

... there was someone here once that was trying to ensure they could make it to the Tassie ferry from some regional center like Bathurst or similar on 1 tank their budget was that tight...
What sort of holiday that would be I cant imagine.

Not everyone has $$$$$$$ lining their pockets, even more so the self employed that spend the money on the trip and then miss out on income during that time away... I'm not rich, nor am I poor, the latter because I try not to waste money! No need to budget to the dollar, a general idea of cost will allow me to save for the few months before a big trip so when the trip comes no need to hit the credit card!!!

We allow $1000/week, this is reasonably accurate for us on the few 3+week trips we have done, 2adults, 3kids including food, fuel, accommodation etc.

I envy the people that don't care/know how much their trips cost!!!

Fair enough - what you say makes good sense....

To get into semi retirement / semi grey nomad mode for 2018 - we're planning 1 x big $K OS trip, and 3 x 3 week caravan trips away....

Considering the van hasn't had one trip out all year 2017 because we've been flat out working - (grrr disgusted with me self) - 3 x 3 weekers will be a big deal for us, and something to look forward to....

We are budgeting 3 trips away x about 3 weeks each trip x about $150 a day....  = $9.5K ...simples...

We are hoping to do touring type trips, base camps in one spot maybe approx 3 days, and have an off grid set up....

I reckon if we're chilling around the campsite; just enjoying the scenery, doin some gourmet cooking, and movies at night etc - then the spend rate will be less then the 150 a day...

But we are allowing for that so that we can also take ourselves off to RSL type dinners, afford lunch on the road, sightseeing tours and souvenirs, coffee and snacks etc etc - at will and whenever we want to.....

For the up coming 3 month Kimberley trip I am roughly estimating approx $100 per day. If we go over
that I will use the price of alcohol as the problem.

Prior to the trip any bills due such as mobile phones etc will be paid 5 months in advance. We will be unemployed heading into the trip but we should have a job waiting for us when we get back. Well that's the plan.

I budget when doing trips with the kids or boys trips away. When the wife comes I do my best to not find out what she spends. I am a bit of a miser. She buys experiences that I enjoy much more when I don’t know what we have paid.
As for not checking prices in restaurants - I could never do that. Some of the wine lists I have read would bankrupt a small country.

We also allow around the $1 per K, did the Savanah Way this year over 10 weeks around 10K travelled in 10 weeks.
Spent just under $10K so this was around $1000 per week which is what we budget.
