Here we go.
"Legal Aid lawyer Tim McKenzie told Magistrate Susan McGowan he would seek to have a psychiatrist prepare a report ahead of Blackley's sentencing."
Our legal system sucks.

Yeah, he's clearly got mental health issues, although I'm surprised it's not alleged

Maybe leave him in the car while it's being crushed?

Always amazes me when the cops pull someone over and find a suspended\cancelled license that they think giving them a fine and having them go to court will change their behaviour. They obviously have no consideration of the law in the first place, the fines will be on a payment plan with state debt recovery (or your state's equivalent) so they will have to pay them off at bugger all of nothing a week.

The only way to stop these morons from driving is to lock them up at our expense.

But the bleeding hearts will cry that they have rights.........and it's society's fault or their mother didn't breastfeed them, or the system failed them, or any other excuse.

Find the damn lefty bleeding hearts, and send them over to their place to live for a while. Let them take care of them, feed them and give them their "rights".

Please don't blame the police for doing their job enforcing the laws that our Parliament decide on. They are just doing their job. I not sure what you would expect them to otherwise do without committing a crime themselves.

I don't blame the cops for what goes on. It's the overpaid dicks with the fancy wigs that are the ones that fail the system.

Interesting progression on this thread

We live in a country that was a penal colony for people who committed minor offences.  Was this an effective deterrent?  They kept coming until we stopped taking them.

As for 5 star accommodation, please don't invite me to your Hotel

Having said that I don't know what you do with unreasonable people who wont change their behaviour.  I guess we end up paying for them to be incarcerated in prisons that COST more than 5 star hotels

That's the problem with our judicial system most of the magistrates etc come out of the legal aid system and they generally are bleeding hearts, good solicitors / barristers make much better coin defending / representing their clients then the muppets handing out the rulings it's a system bound to fail I reckon mandatory sentencing and a three strikes policy like hey have in the us would change a lot here in Australia.

That's worked so well for them that they have the highest rate of incarceration (almost twice the next China) http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/hi/uk/06/prisons/html/nn2page1.stm

Why anyone would use the USA as an example to follow is beyond me.  I prefer to copy someone who is fairer and a fair go is the main rule.

I know!
We can hide in the bushes and take photos of them, then send them a letter with the photo and a small fine.

Guaranteed to change their behavior..... :) :) :)
Apparently there’s plenty of studies out there that prove this technique works a treat... ;D ;) :)

Suspended/cancelled/disqualified are all chargeable offences. Police cannot fine them for these. It goes to court for the magistrate to let them off lightly because they had a hard upbringing.

For someone disqualified that long in NSW they will shortly be able to get their licences back quicker with a change of legislation

My apologies, having re-read my post I realise how it came across.

This was in NO way meant as a stab at the Police, they can only do as much as they can do and the overwhelming majority do a fantastic job with what I imagine is a lack of resources. Not their fault the idiots are aloud back out on the road.

The court system is also constrained by resources so whilst I personally feel they could do more, they almost certainly need more to do more. Pretty hard when you have a docket list as long as your arm and are pressured to get through all of them.

When it comes to scum like this bloke..who is interested in Fair?  I,m not. Oxygen thieves need swimming lessons. Starting with a drop off 200klms out to sea. If they swim home , maybe then we will give him a fair go. Eye for an eye...thats fair.
Having lots of friends on farcebook is the same as having lots of money in monopoly...means absolutely nothing!!

Well the current system is as effective as the US one isn't it? Something has to change - correct?

I also agree with fish - **** fair. the current crop of scum don't understand "fair"... And most of the crims in Melbourne at moment come from countries that don't have fair - they have 1 strike and your dead.

How many chances do people need to be "fair" ??? ???

How can "I had a bad childhood" be a defense in every crime - did nobody in this country have a good childhood??

That means because I have had a good childhood and have respect I will have the book thrown at me. I was brought up the wrong way.
