Gas bottle refills - anyone do it by weight?

Hi all,
Went down to the local BBQ Galore yesterday with a 2kg & 4kg bottle to be refilled.
Put through the till as individual items totalling $26.95.
Asked why I couldn't pay for 8.5kg refill and they could keep the extra 2.5kg of gas for free - said he wasn't allowed to do this.
Has anyone come across a place that would?

Everywhere I've ever had bottles filled, it's dearer per kg for smaller bottles.
Makes sense when you think about it, as there is a fixed amount of time to hook up and disconnect regardless of the bottle size. You are paying for the gas, plus the labour to fill the bottle.

Across the ditch they charge by how much they put in. Great I think. Particularly touring, allows you to top bottles up when you can and only pay for what you use.

I throw my bottle on the scales to see how empty they are before taking them for filling.
The amount they weigh when they come back from being "filled" varies greatly. Some how the price never changes though.

I'd love it if we paid by actual weight here. Every filling station should have a simple set of scales.

The last time I took the 2kg bottle in for a 'top up' I told the guy how much was in there. As he had to put less then 1kg of gas in he did me an awesome deal.... It only cost me $8 instead of $9.

I don't know anywhere that would give that many Shits as to save you money on a gas fill. Even the shonky little Asian run corner store that didn't check dates on my cylinders has gone now

I get my bottles filled at "B & E gas" in port kembla (near wollongong) & they charge by weight.

The 'swap n go' website actually says they will swap out of date cylinders, as long as they aren't damaged or badly rusted.

When I do swap and go, I check the date on the cylinder I'm getting, and when I give out cylinders, I find the ones with the longest date to give the customer.

There was nearly a punch up at the Straddie Roadhouse over Christmas.
The guy behind the counter refused to swap an old bottle with no swap and go sticker on it. Old mate with the empty bottle lost his lollies, but the dude behind the counter kept his cool the whole time and the 30 odd people in the store pissed them selves laughing when old hot head left with his empty bottle in his hand....

The bloke behind the counter was wrong.
The Elgas 'Swap n go' site says they will swap any 9kg or 4kg gas bottle, regardless of brand.

To be honest I walked in on the middle of it, the whole scene had started before I got there.

While I was filling the car there were 2 guys at the swap and go box swearing their heads off.
As I walked in to pay for my fuel there was a big crowd already lined up. Old mate came storming in with his old bottle still swearing his head off, he slammed the bottle on the counter and went ballistic at the young guy behind the counter for about 10 minutes.
Obviously I couldn't see any dates on the bottle, but it clearly wasn't a swap and go bottle and it looked ancient.

The young guy could only say "I'm sorry, but I can't take that bottle".

Perhaps it would seam the young guy was possibly wrong (now that I've seen these previous post here).
But at the time it all seamed to me the young guy was right and the old guy swearing his head off in front of about 10 families was wrong.

Yeah, the date doesn't matter, but they won't swap them if they are damaged or very rusty.
It's all spelled out pretty clearly (and reasonably) on the web page.

Also agreed, very poor form for that bloke to go off tap at the young bloke and in front of everyone.

Yep, and if you need a new gas bottle they normally have a spot for old gas bottles at your local tip, just grab one and take it in.

Was passing through Julia Creek not so long ago and needed to fill 9kg cylinder.....pulled up at the local hardware shop to find out they weighed the cylinder and only charged for the gas they put in.....gas was a bit more expensive than home ......But we found it refreshing to find a store that only charged for what they supplied........

haha, you have to pay a "donation" at our local tip, but you can't buy one from them because it's illegal for them to sell old bottles.

For the OP, I have seen a spring scale used to weigh bottles that I have got filled, but it would be a few years ago now. And the woman at one of the local servos refused to do a swap and go on one of their bottles that was out of date once, even though I explained that it was their bottle, and what the site says etc. The bottle was clean, no rust and clearly stickered, just 3 months out of date...Got too hard, as she was a stubborn old cow, so I took it up the road to another servo and no problem.

Could be the difference in getting ya dinner cooked.

There is a cylinder testing / gas supply place which I normally get my bottles filled at.
He does them on a scale, but I've never taken one in which wasn't empty, so I have no idea if he charges less for a part fill.

They are exactly the same. The 9kg nominal bottles should only ever be filled to 8.5kg, and the 4kg to 3.7.
