1971 VH Valiant Charger R/T E38 Big Tank | Tuff Touring Cars

Genuine and rare, 1 of only 224 E38 Big Tank R/T Chargers ever made. Factory Bathurst Big Tank Charger in hero Hemi Orange colour with original T1 Tan trim.
To add to its uniqueness, this E38 is one of the first 100 built and has the J82 option which deletes the quarter vent windows in the doors and adds the opening rear louvre windows, which is extremely rare in a VH Charger. The change in ventilation was designed for improved distribution of airflow for the racetrack.

The E38/E49s were successful as race cars and now widely recognised as one of the sexiest Australian cars ever built (according to Wheels Magazine).

Bare metal rotisserie restored approximately 10 years ago and still in spectacular condition. Running the famous high compression 265ci Hemi headed six cylinder engine fed by those amazing triple Weber carbies. Original factory 3 speed floor shift manual. Interestingly, the factory records show the engine fitted as D363B00031 whereas D363B00032 is actually fitted to the car.

Immaculate original interior, wheel, dash, gauges all in perfect condition. These were one of the nicest seat/dash/steering wheel combos of the era.

Beautiful paint and panel on a dead straight rust free body. Complete with its legendary 35 gallon (160 litre) Bathurst tank strapped in the boot.

Multiple trophy winning R/T Charger showing 103,247 genuine miles, and signed by Bathurst Racing legend Leo Geoghegan in the engine bay at a WA Chrysler show in 2011.

If memory serves me correct the last one is a Chrysler Royal .. Still remember driving around Dorrigo in a metallic green / white  trimmed one as a little kid, belonged to our neighbour in the caravan park that we made friends with, Apparently it was George Wallace and his wife ..
All I remember of the time is the car,  him and her sitting with us  singing songs over a few meals and drinks and them giving me soft drink and treats  ;D ;D

Remember a few yrs ago ( maybe 10 ) you could pick one of these up for approx 50K or less.  They certainly turn heads and the best bit, no super expensive euro parts in them.

A mate from a few year ago has owned two of them. I got to take one for a short drive.  In those days you could get the oil filter, points etc from Kmart.  One of his had a really lumpy cam & competition clutch which he ended up toning back.  Great for fast drives but hard to take off without stalling or spinning wheels.

But it least they did not use leaf springs & drum brakes from the old fords.  Plus mid engine.  So could handle & stop much better than ..... old fords & holdens.

I've finally got myself an old cruiser. Been wanting one for years, seriously looking for the last few months, when this 1975 Mercedes 280S came up in my budget, original paint, original books, no rust I couldn't say no. Kids absolutely love the springy back seat!!

Nice. Always had a bit of a soft spot for the old Mercs. A mates mum had an earlier one that we used to cruise in and siphon fuel out of when we were a bit short. I'd love to grab one and LS swap it. Not make it loud and audacious. Just a nice cruiser with  bit of poke. That would nice with a set of wheels.

I've also had a soft spot for them since my mate's mum had one identical to Edz pic about 30 years ago. It seems like everyone I speak to had a mate who had one, no one had one themselves hahaha!!!

It's a carby 6, I was after the V8 version but out of my budget, if this motor carks it I'll do a V8 swap for sure. The body and interior are like new so it's a prime candidate for an engine swap. It is so smooth  over the bumps and on the highway, literally like riding on a couch. It's no speed demon, my Ranger would kill it to 100 haha but even the kids and missus commented how comfy and smooth it was.

Went out to the shed at 9pm last night, just keen to try some polish on it as there were a few "cloudy" areas on the paint. Got carried away and did the whole bloody car, finished at 11pm but it looks so much better now!!! I'm like a kid at Christmas (well it is my belated 40th present to myself...).
