New trailer tyres - Are these off road tyres?
« on: July 15, 2016, 12:37:27 PM »
Hi there,

Just picked up my new camper, it is shown in the show room with muddies on, and has come with something different.  the tyres are not very aggressive and are stamped with

'standard load'
'Tread 1 ply nylon +2ply Steel + 2 ply polyester'
'Sidewall 2 ply polyester'

the tread looks like a road tyre.  so could this fall into the 'off road' tyre range?  or would it seem reasonable to go back to the manufacturer and ask for some off road tyres? ???

Cheers

They look like HT or highway pattern, unless you specifically asked for or have a need for muddies on the trailer i would leave it as is.
Only time i would put muds on is if i was putting new tyres on the tug and the old tyres still had life in them and will fit the trailer wheels.

Yep I would leave them unless you have all the same wheels on the tug and camper and are planning on swapping them around for better wear.
Never understood why people put mud tyres on trailers but each to their own.

Might pay to read the fine print of the sales brochure ..

Talking to a couple of sales guys, if the trailer doesn't have mud tyres and independent suspension at the camping show, most of the weekend warriors walk straight past. Even 22 foot 'offroad' vans have them now. My camper came with mud tyres - first time for everything.

To the OP, yes, that tyre looks like it will have AT (all terrain) in the name somewhere which would put it in the offroad category. So long as the load rating is correct and it has an Australian standard on it I wouldn't be too stressed.

My last camper did 10 years on a set of cooper HT's that were leftovers from a cruiser I bought.

Well, let me explain. When you run the same wheel pattern on the trailer as you do on the tug it stands to reason that you would run the same wheel and also the same tyre. If you don't then you are losing the big advantage of having the same pattern.

If you do run muddies on the tug, as I do (but not actually for mud ), then running the same tyre across all 9 rims means you have many rotation options and you can save your trailer tyres the embarrassment of languishing forlornly on the driveway for most of the year going hard in the sun  ;D

check the fine print on the tyres, Like GBC said "if they are Australian tyres then I wouldnt worry" the troubl;e starts when you buy a CT imported from China. Mine had "Coopers all terrain" on it when it came, I thought...not happy, but they will have to be reasonable to carry the "Cooper" name and headed to the Kimberlies.

It was only after I got home and tried to change the tyres to something that was an "off road" tyre when I found out they were Chinese rubbish made in China at the Cooper factory.

Cooper Aus will not warranty anything that they do not import.

Chinese tyres are not made for Australian conditions.

I have included pics of what to look for on the tyres, and what the tyres look like after 10 klms of Gibb River road.

W e were lucky we were driving slowly, no damage to the camper. Wheel and tyre were stuffed due to the weight of the camper [not overloaded].

In the pics you can see the splits in the rubber around the rims [i was told by the people I bought it from they had been slashed] that was after 3500 klms on sealed road.

It is not worth the risk. Check your tyres and where they are manufactured.

Wow, the load index of those ones is low - only 112 (1120kg per tyre)  - Normal Coopers ATs are 123 (1550kg)

MattNQ when I complained about what I thought were "under rated" tyres, or tyres that were too close to their "rated limit" [because this is what I was told from two tyre dealers with years of experience - one was an Australian Cooper dealer] to the person I bought my camper through, I was warned "To Be Very Careful" about what you say and what you put on social media.

Hence, I haven't done a trip report and have been very careful not to bag the company nor the camper manufacturer.

My thoughts on cheap Chinese Tyres are a different matter.
