Urgent , Mt Kozie walk to the top advice needed.
« on: November 13, 2015, 02:41:16 PM »
OK swaggers, advice needed
We are from WA and on the road at the moment.
Our time line is a bit fixed for a week, but before that we have a a few days spare next week and would love to walk to the top of Mt Kosciuszko. We want to leave the van in the Bega area and stay a Monday and Tuesday nights in the Thredbo area.
Besides the caravan park is there any other secure places to leave the van in Bega area?
Also does anyone have suggestions on accomodation up there. Looking for a nice apartment/villa, but not mega $
From what i understand we need to go to Thredbo and take the cable car to the top, then walk the last part. I assume I can arrange it all up there (not accomodation, we want that sorted before we go)

I was up there 2 weeks ago. Kosi express chairlift was closed for maintenance, snowgums lift open. Just means an extra 500m steep walk. Makes the approach from Charlottes pass a better proposition. Thredbo was absolutely dead at the time.
Getting warmer now so will prob be busier.

Based on my brothers & sister-in-law's experience make sure you carry your wet  / cold wx gear. They experienced snow showers on Christmas day.

Agree. Walk up from the top of Charlotte's Pass. Don't need to use chairlift. Also you could seek out accommodation at Perisher or in fact Charlottes Pass.

For two nights storage you might be best to leave the van at the Cvan park in Bega.

Staying in Jindabyne is normally cheaper than Thredbo, but you miss out on the stunning views and atmosphere.   The older units on the side of the hill in Thredbo have much better views, but the new ones down in the valley are obviously going to be in better condition.  My old favourites were the ones just under the Alpine Way(higher up the hill)  harder walk up and down, but lovely to sit and look out across at the ski runs.

You can walk from Charlotte's Pass to Kosi, or take the chairlift at Thredbo and walk from there.  Charlotte's is longer, but it is an old road so slightly easier., whereas from Thredbo you have the metal grate path.  Pluses and minuses each way, really.  For a first visit you will want to take the chairlift anyway for the experience, so you might as well do the walk from there.

Take wind proof/rainproof jackets and sun protection and snacks for the walk.  They will tell you the weather changes rapidly up there, and they really mean it.

  • If in doubt, grab a handful of 2nd gear.

Pretty much nailed it.

The Lantern Apartments in Thredbo have awesome views across to the ski runs, as described they are up the slope from the main village area which is a nice walk. The management there are brilliant.  Parking is provided but the undercover spots are tight and roof high limited. Another option is Lake Crakenback, a short drive away. The accomdation here ranges from Chalets to Apartments. Mid week deals aren't to expensive. They have awesome restaurants and plenty of activities, we are off to Crakenback next weekend.

As mentioned the weather changes very quickly. The defference between Thredbo and the top of the chair lift can surprise. If its sunny take plenty of sunscreen. Pack a warm jacket and rain gear. We take the Jetboil hiking stove to enjoy hot drinks on these type of walks. From memory its a 12 kilometre walk from the top of the chair lift and return. This is one of our favourite areas in Australia. Enjoy.

Cheers,

Disco teddy.

That is the one I was thinking of.  Stayed there multiple times.

And as for weather, we got caught in a blizzard up the top on Australia Day one year.  Light pack with clothes in it regardless of what it looks like from the village, or what the weather report says.

We ended up staying at the Snowgoose Apartments.
SWMBO got an online deal.
They are new, central and excellent views over ski runs
