What next?.....
« on: September 25, 2015, 10:42:15 AM »
Morning all, thought I might make a contribution and let the forum know of my recent "hiccups" during preparation of a longish trip.
Me and the missus decided to get the old KK out and make a journey across the middle....Nullabor heading east and Plenty Hwy/Great Central Road coming home...all up 5 or 6 weeks.
OK....1st things 1st....charge up the battery. Charger doesn't seem to want to work, so I hook up an old trickle charger which, according to the light display, was working. Research and buy new 7 stage charger from Ebay. After a couple of days battery appears to be charged. Checked it...only 11.5 volts. Removed from C/T and found it's put on a bit of weight since we last met....massive bulge on one end. So research and buy new battery from local blokes.
Because of about 1700 kms of dirt roads on our upcoming trip I decided to fit some substantially large rear mudflaps (had these on my last car).
This involved removing the rear wheels to fit these mudflaps. My rear tyres have done 47,000 kms and from the outside look to have at least another 30,000 kms in them. Once off the car I could have a better look at the tyres....oh dear......the inside shoulder of the RH side tyre is showing bits of what we used to call "canvas". LH marginally better but no way would I attempt a 10,000 km journey with these.
Researched and bought  2 new ones (plus wheel alignment) from another local bloke.
I usually keep the KK parked in the yard but decided to back it into my garage to to some work on it including the wheel bearings. Long story short....the road verge is quite low and my recently fitted LHR mudflap got caught under the wheel and got ripped off together with the existing Mitsubishi fitted mudflap plus its mounting bracket plus a large plastic splash shield. While I was reversing I felt some resistance but just thought it was the steepish driveway so just (gently) put the foot down.
So most of yesterday arvo I spent repairing this little mishap...including removing everything off the RHS so I could see what the bracket looked like before I ran over it. So far I'm out of pocket $900
I have a bad feeling about this trip....and I haven't even left home yet.

I believe this is standard with Paj's...

Yeah, I believe so...my tyre guy said the same thing. I bought the car 2nd hand with near new tyres on it and I fitted polyairs straight away for when I'm towing the C/T.
The car has done 120,000 kms since I bought it (226,000 all up) and this will be my 1st wheel alignment.

and this will be my 1st wheel alignment.
From what I've read, its more to do with the suspension than alignment - airbags or not.

I think my tyre wear is due to the alignment being out...I haven't had the C/T on for a long time.
The Pajeros IRS will cause negative camber on the rear wheels if a heavy van or trailer is hooked on.....the polyairs will correct some, if not all, of this negative camber.
Hope this makes sense.

Just thought I would price the bracket and mudflap .
I've managed to straighten the bracket and get it all fitted back up but obviously it's not perfect.
From Mitsubishi the bracket is $77 and the mudflap is $86.....FFS!!!
Trying wreckers now.

When you get your tyres fitted and aligned, load the car up so it's carrying the weight it would be when towing. Makes a big difference to the alignment..

PS. Love the handle.. RAAF Ski club in Amberley used to have a boat with that name. Used to "Lane race" with it and the commentators referred to it as "Distant Waterways"
