Seems to be a sign of the times.  There quite a few bigger operators up this way who are doing it tough and a number who have also closed the doors.

Gonna be a lot of kit for sale now then.
Obviously a demand for the work, so I guess someone will fill the spot.

I remember them from my days at boarding school at Lismore in the 60's-70's. Had their depot on Whyralla Road just past the girlfriends place.

Yeh that's what little commonsense I have tells me, hence the question. I can understand closing a non profitable business and selling off the assets but just closing down a profitable business so you can retire is plain crazy. It's deep into the evening, am I missing something?

I guess if you are that well off and want for nothing, the hassle of trying to find a buyer that would cough up the sqillions its worth .. maybe its just as easy to auction off the rolling stock and lease out the sheds and land ..
Wonder if they will pay a percentage to their workers when its finalised, like a transport company did a few years ago .. each worker got a percentage share of the sale worked out on years of service with the company as a thank you bonus ..

i guess the owners will retire comfortably AND pay out their workers in full is why the decision was made.

You'd think as mentioned already they'd sell the business, would have to be easier to do one sale of all then get rid of everything seperately wouldn't it?
That's gunna be a lot of employed people now also isn't it?...surely it's a better option for the staffs employment to sell as a whole also?

Noel,
I think your thinking of Norton's Transport which were on Wyrallah Rd. Mills Transport were on Union St. South Lismore. I lived not far from Norton's Transport depot, they had German Shepards guarding the premises after hours... they used to scare the S@#t out of me when ever I walked past.

In hindsight you are right. The memory is not as good as it used to be. I remember the dogs distinctly too.

i recall seeing a similar story on tv several years ago, an American guy sold his asphalting business that did highway work to someone like Boral for several hundred million dollars. This guy and his wife decided they were no chance of ever spending all the money they'd just come into in their life time, so invited their employees around to their place for a company thank you picnic. The owner of the company gave each employee and envelope with a cheque in it as a thank you gift, depending on how long you'd been with the company depended on how much he gave you...some employees actually got a cheque for a million dollars each 8) 8)

I grew up in Casino and I seem to remember a good size depot there as well. Please correct me if I am wrong. But Casino and Lismore are about 20 min from each other.
