I've got an 09 Pajero with the 3.2DiD, currently has 198,000km and has been fantastic for touring. Rock hopping look elsewhere...
Fuel economy when towing was around the 12L/100km, empty it averages between 8.5-10L/100km
I'm on my 2nd Pajero. As suggested by eman, they are great tourers (and in sand) but others are best suited for rock hopping.
My '09 NT also gets similar fuel consumption as reported by eman (auto diesel).
I'd recomend getting an NT ('09+) or newer. They have substantially more power & torque (like 20% more), a much better auto, and highter tow rating compared to the older models.
Just be aware, Pajeros have a lower ball weight limit compared to other brands.
