digital radio. any good?
« on: August 22, 2014, 10:02:37 PM »

I was wondering if anyone has any feed back on how these digital radios are going. Specially in more remote areas such as between darwin and perth via the top end.

I can't help you on your specific location question but let me relate my experience with my digital radio on my desk at work.
I had a traditional radio on my desk and would get poor reception but great digital mobile phone reception so I thought a digital radio would be better than the other one I had. Fail. Even though radios and phones use different transmission towers etc I used the anology that if digital phone reception can get to my desk then digital radio could too.

I can only comment on my fathers experience, located in a poorer signal area in the burbs
of Melbourne, am radio worked ok, fm worked ok, digital won't work unless external antenna
connected as it keeps dropping out.

Usual digital experience sold as the bees knees but really only ones that benefit are the Government
as they can then sell the old frequency spectrum to the mobile phone companies when they can
get every one to move across.

Like digital TV, was sold as better picture, for some maybe from a interference or poor signal
perspective when you used to get ghosting etc, though in those cases digital generally doesn't
work at all.

Form where I am I have line of sight to the TV transmitters, old CRT picture was heaps better
than the current Panasonic Plasma, real disappointment watching the footy etc with all the pixelation
when quick movement is involved and they sell it is HD TV!

Hi,
my son had one, and his ISP provided free bandwith for the streaming on his home network.

Do you know how much bandwidth you will consume? I am presuming this will be on the mobile network if you need it on the road.

cheers

Last time I looked, Digital radio, using a radio receiver as distinct from the internet, has no coverage outside the capital cities.

Cheers all.
I think I just stick with the good old standard radio.

I tried one in the wilds of Logan City. 32ks as the crow flies from the transmitters. Nada, zip, nuthin! Don't see how it would be any good in remote WA.
Cheers, John.

Yep it's a shame as Double J's a great music station. I listen to it on the TV quite a bit.

x a guzillion.

As stated above, digital radio is only in the capital cities. There is a website with a map and all the info.

I am using DAB in my car when inthe city.
Last Saturday we went up to Lancelin, but before Yanchep the reception was dropping out. That's 50 kms north of Perths CBD.
Everywhere else I love it.
