Some unscrupulous blokes are getting the copies cheap and then selling them through farm clearing sales as 'real' Stihls....buyer beware.

Clearing Sales and chainsaws there a match made in heaven. People go mad on chainsaws at clearing sales, often paying as much or more for a used saw as new one would cost with out knowing the work history of the saw.

I have had my stihl farm boss for 17 years and have abused it sensely.  It has built (with my help!) 20+km of fence (including dropping the tree, post making, slabbing for the rails, stay building), several farm buildings, more firewood than I care to think of, track clearing, storm clean ups, prunning in our 2000 tree orchard, plus many other tasks.  Still starts thirds pull and has only had an occasional service (three in 17 years).  I can't recommend it more highly for durability. 

I have a mate who is a Husky fan and I have used his a few times.  It seems lighter, but not as torguey.  Still a good bit of kit and he has also had a great run out of it and I think it would also be a viable option.

One comment about bring/sending chainsaws.  When they are sold new, often they are test started and tuned at the shop that sells them and so has a little fuel still in them.  This is not received well by the shipping company or airline if a bit of fuel leaks out during transport.

I've had a Husky for years, no drama's, always starts first go.  Also had a Husky mower for almost 20 years and it has only just died.  I'll buy a husky everytime.  Had stihl whippersnipper from early 80's and it was a good machine, replaced it with another stihl which was crap, won't go there again.

Looked ok to me, rackers leading the cutters? Still wpuldn't entertain one though.

both husky and stihl have consumer range stuff, (ms170 from stihl and the various re-badged talons that husky sell) which is mostly pretty cheap and chearfull,

on the other hand both still sell serious saws such as the pro ranges such as magnums (stihl) and XP range (husky) that are an entirely different range.

and the smallest rear handles quality saws are the 50cc stihl ms261 and the husky xp346 which are very hard to split .


its not a fair comparison to compare any stihl or husky consumer product with any pro product.

Just bear in mind that a brand that was good 5 or 10 years ago may have changed since; under cost pressures from Chinese makers, an inadvertent result of worse management etc etc.

I bought a little Stihl ms170 on sale last year. It's ok, can be hard to start but next time I'm going to try an Echo, they're supposed to be very good.

Over the years I've had Stihl, Jonsered, Poulan and Husky.  They've all been good.

When you look at what pro timber cutters use, it's Stihl or Husky.  The goss is that Stihl quality has declined however.  And even some of those guys are buying cheap Chinese jobs as backup machines.

For occasional use, I'm not sure that the brand matters that much.  The key to performance is to maintain the bar and chain properly and not to use stale fuel.

That said, the current tool is a Husky 345E with an 18" bar and it goes gangbusters.  Easy start every time; low vibration; good balance.  Got this from a gray-market importer on Ebay.

In the bush, it pays to take a couple of plastic wedges to avoid embarrassment, a decent length of non-stretch rope and a spare chain (at a minimum; take sharpening gear if out for any length of time).

I grabbed the Ozito one of these about a year ago from Bunnings for $99 on special and it's been an awesome saw for camping firewood, if I had a fireplace at home I'd buy one of the better brands without a doubt, but for a saw that does about 1-3 hours cutting a year it's perfect.

how do you come to that conclusion, the current ms261 has prolly the best antivibration and air filtration of any chainsaw ever built,

and the talk i hear is the M-tronic 460s are fantastic,
