What's the go with taking kids out of school??
« on: December 05, 2013, 09:48:35 AM »
Back when I was a boy, it was a treat to get a Friday arvo off when we were going on Hols, more likely the parents would pick us up from school when we got out.

Spent a few days at Point Plomer a couple of weeks ago & was surprised to see lots of school aged kids running around. Now I'm not saying it's a bad idea to take kids out of school a bit early [before the Christmas rush] BUT a full 4 weeks seems a lot to me.

I am sure the reason is prices go through the roof for anything around holiday destinations during school holidays so the parents drag them out of school a little early just so they can afford to take them some where, the education department will soon be cracking down on this but a simple solution would be the tourism industry should stop jacking the prices up during school holidays.
I just had visitors over and they could not believe how hard it was to book a trip across to Tassie on the spirit with short notice they thought they could book a couple of days prior but had to wait 8 days to get on and I explained to them that all the grey nomads get here for the cheaper fairs before the school holidays start.

I am taking my kids out of school for a couple of weeks after the first term school holidays next year saving me over $2000.00 in just the air fairs just to cross the paddock to see their relatives. If I was to go during the school holidays it just wouldn't happen simply could not afford it.

Agree with the above comments, but also I think getting leave from work is also a problem these days, well at least were I work, in some ways you have to take a holiday when you can get it.

Ive had to apply for leave more then 12 months in advance to get leave, because of ratios at work, but to also tie it in with some school hols so I don't disrupt the kids to much, that's prob not to much of drama for the more organised ones out there, but not for me, I don't know what im doing next week, without thinking 12 months in advance...lol

I think more and more we have take what we can get with hols and if that means having the kids out of school so you can enjoy a family holiday, then that's whats got to happen.

I reckon both above are correct... specially some of the prices and *Min* stays required when you dont really wanna stay that long.

got to agree with that myself, i know at my wifes work they have cut back staff numbers so much over the years, that these days only one person is allowed off on holidays at any one time. try working that system into school holidays and Xmas time off etc for those with families to plan around, and you can see why many would choose to take their kids out of school when they do.

Whenever we go away it's generally always outside of the school holidays. We just took the kids on a cruise. We went with friends who took their kids. The price for us during school holidays was too prohibitive. A lot of tourist destinations during school holidays are too expensive for families. Another reason we go outside of school holidays is because it's very hard for me to get leave at those times.  It's also generally not as busy outside of school holidays as it is during.  At the end of the day a week or two during the year is not going to affect their education too much.

We've taken our son out of school a fair bit when he was younger and we travelled a lot.  We organized with his teachers to have set work for him to do whilst away.  Never hurt him any.  We figured 6 weeks traveling in Europe was beneficial for him as well.

Have to put my ex-School Principal hat on here:- You are probably right, depending on how you do it. Talk to the teacher/s. See what's happening at that time of year. "Catch up" on any new work happening. Get your children to do a little bit of reading while they are away - can be as simple as the map notes or local takeaway menu etc. Depending on their age, get them to do some practical stuff with money eg work out whether the change they were given is correct etc etc etc There are lots of practical things they can do that will reinforce their education. Probably the most important, though, is to not let the kids see that their schooling is irrelevant. Unfortunately, some parents do that and are then surprised when results suffer.

I appreciate where your coming from and fully agree with you. There is no point in taking your kids travelling with if they arn't going to learn something.  Where ever we go we always like to teach each our kids about the area we visit or the people who live there. When they get back to school they always tell their class about what the learnt for news.  These things can be as simple as the name of a significant landmark of the area. We make sure we extra school readers sent home before we go so they can at least continue with that.

Some good comments here, and being [formally] DINKS, now NINKS we certainly try to avoid peak times. Mainly due to the extra people, didn't realise that the $$$'s factor was so high, I think S O's remarks are very prudent.
