You go kids and tell the old fart nanny-staters to naff off!
« on: November 20, 2013, 12:53:16 AM »
About time we oldies listened to the cry for freedom we enjoyed at their age but have amnesia about now-
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/more-than-1100-young-drivers-sign-petitions-urging-sa-government-to-reverse-changes-to-pplate-driving-laws/story-fni6uo1m-1226763176175
Shame on my old tosser generation. Shame!
There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.

I can't understand what the SA youths are complaining about, these laws or similar laws have been in QLD for a long time now.

Queensland Department of Transport
•P1 type provisional licence holders under 25 years

During the period between 11 pm on a day and 5 am on the next day, the P1 type provisional driver must not drive on a road in a car carrying more than one passenger under the age of 21 years who is not an immediate family member.

The new P plate law for SA, and what they are having a winge about.

"Allowing only one person between the ages of 16 and 20 in the car with a P-plater driving will mean that when people who go out on the weekend (they) will no longer be able to have a designated driver to take them home," Caleb's petition says.

IS THERE NOT A LAW IN AUSTRALIA THAT HAS A LEAGLE DRINKING AGE ? These people are talking about 16 and 17 year olds.
"These people will likely walk home and drunk people wobbling all over the road is not safe."

I am not going to bring politics into this but the sooner Australia brings in a across the nation set of standards, registration, licence's and regulations the better we would be.

And when they can start to observe and obey the road rules would be to their credit also. I know that this does not include all P platers but many of them ignore the speed limits, use cell phones while driving, tailgate and don't adjust their driving to the conditions when wet. In other words, many consider themselves to be bulletproof. These rules are put in place for their own safety.
Perhaps a Defensive Driving and Competancy course could be introduced and those that attend and pass it could apply to have their licence upgraded sooner. Just a thought.

and Victoria.

It has to be acknowledged that it is based on sound science.   The day you get your licence you go from belonging to the statistically lowest risk drivers on the road (Learners) to one of the highest risk group.

lts Change to the status  quo , & change while making things different can keep some alive . lf P platers are to be saved from themselves then do it .
We need young people to become the " Old Farts " that are buggering their lives . They can then bugger the lives of the next generation , & so it goes . They can't do it grinning at the lid .
Phones , face book , Emails , ipods & all the other " Stuff " played with today to distract them from driving to stay alive . Let them explain it to their kids
Never happened to us , did it . Apart from booze/drug bus , seat belts , speed cameras , point to point cameras , number plate recognition , road worthys  apart from that  . Did l mention consequences for you actions , apart from that
Grow up get into parliament & change the rules or , get on with it  ;D ;D

I would happily support these young drivers AS SOON as I see them not talking on their mobile phones, speeding past me sticking there finger up cos I'm only doing 10kph OVER the limit.
What an OLD TOSSER!!!

If you want respect, you need to earn it.
I know this is a generalisation, but as a driver on the road for up to 4 hours per day in Sh!tney, I see a whole lot of young drivers who have no fear or concern for others.
As usual this group is ruining it for the others who are doing the right thing, but consider your feelings if it was your family on the road next to them.

Sorry I can't agree, life is too precious. If they want to make a change, they need to change their driving habits.
I do know, I was that age once too.......

how often does that turn to multi fatality accidents...

From what I see driving around Sydney that's an under generalization. What you describe is just about most of the idiots driving. Fcuk statistics driver quality in this country sucks.

I still remember some of the stupid/high risk/dangerous stuff I used to do when I was young....

And most young blokes ( and some girls ) will do the same........

Anything to try and stop them doing high risk stuff has got to be applauded I think.....and as usual, it will also impact on the people that do the right thing....but doesn't that apply to us all at some time in life..??

Yep because no teenager ever drove stupidly in the past, never took risks, sped, raced, were in experienced. Only today's youth are that bad.

What a crock. 18 year olds are stupid and full of themselves, always have been always will be. They think they know it all and can do it all. Then they turn 30 and realise what idiots they were and thank the gods they survived

Yep agree or maybe it will also mean that they will need to have more designated drivers in the group so less of them are getting wasted and causing more trouble or damage to themselves or others.

Again generalising. Because no teenagers were hippies, or mods, or punks, or dandys, or skinheads, or sharpies etc etc

It is nothing new, just different.

It's not the teenagers it's the parents raising them who are the problem. They are the ones not teaching them respect, to think things through etc etc  kids learn respect, manners, responsibility from their parents, family, community so if they are badly taught well...

Yet the fatalities and serious injuries were even worse than what they are today.  As for respect, I'm tipping when you were an 18 year old know it all, the 'oldies' probably looked at you like you look at the current crop...

I don't know mate, my first car was a V8 Torana, it was wild & that thing was not meant to be driven by an 18 year old!!

That's because of much safer cars, much safer roads, stricter laws (like the P plate laws) and the public (on the whole) who are better educated about road safety.

You can't blame their parents at that age.  Most direction at that age is from their peers, which is the very reason for the passenger restriction.

No I had respect even though I admit to being a fool.
I would never have behaved the way some do today.

Absolutely Brian, you are dead right and putting the blame on parents, as has been suggested, is a total cop out.
Many of these teens come from great families who have brought them up with all the good qualities, however, when
they get out loose with their mate and peers their upbringing goes out the back door and they don't give a sh*t.
We may have been mischevious and pushed many boundaries in our youth but we did have respect and knew the
consequences. This is something sadly lacking with many of the young ones today and it reflects badly on the many
good, polite and respectful ones that do exist. One only has to observe the "schoolies" on the Gold Coast this past week
to see the difference. The good kids are great, but the bad ones are shocking.

Having seen the impact on a family that lost three kids in one night in a four fatality accident I applaud the SA govt for taking this stand. If it saves just one life then it's bloody well worth it!

Fear of the consequences my actions would bring.
