Hi, we are very keen to get an Eagle or Swan Outback ordered but at this stage in the year will be ordering a 2014 model, for resale reasons.
Does anyone have a heads up on any changes Jayco will be making? A dealer told me they are moving to independent suspension and a stronger furniture model - do you know of anything else?
Also, any thoughts on Swan vs Eagle? Eagle is big enough for us (one child, 3, but hoping for more!) but I noticed more Swans on Gumtree and wondered whether demand and resale is higher for Swan? The extra storage is also appealing but maybe not worth $2k+.
I bought hubby Weber Baby Q for his bday, camping-themed pjs for anniversary, have camp chairs sorted for Christmas... Now I just need him to get serious and order the trailer!!

Hi The 2013 models have not been out too long so I'm thinking it will be awhile before a new model is out. I have the swan because I wanted that little extra of cupboard space which comes in handy, especially when you can open the door and just grab something from the cupboard. Plenty of eagles getting around also

+1 for the Swan, we nearly went the Eagle but decided
on the Swan for little extra room, glad we did now

Swan for sure. It's definitely worth the extra. The extra room is worth every cent.

The details on 2013 models were available to dealers in late jan 2013. May have been earlier but definitely by then. Took few more months before they updated their website. I ordered a swan in late jan, and picked it up nmlate April.

hi there.

I just ordered a jayco swan outback 2014. Changes are new interior colours, and the big change is jaycos new independant coil suspention which will be standard on the outback (hence the price jump). Don't know what the interior colours will be, as the dealer will ring us when they know. Outside will be same colour.

Now the painful wait

What is the obsession with independant suspension
It is not like you are riding in it or anything

Most people have some sort of articulating hitch these days so where does the benefit lay

Indeed, how long are they making you wait? Which options did you order?

Have to wait till about March April. Hey Chester with the suspension, the independent has lots of advantages. Tows better, turns better, tyres last longer. And I'll be doing a lot of beach tracks so clearance helps. Have friends and family with both and there is defiantly a difference. But in saying that I wouldn't have spent the extra 4 grand to get it on the 2013.

16" wheels
extra water tank
extra gas bottle and fittings
HWS with 12 volt water pump
outdoor shower
kakadu bed ends
fiamma wind out awning
wind up antenna with booster
CD player with in ext speakers
tap and gas fitting on draw bar
120 watt solar with 100 amp battery
rv control panel
kitchen awning

and I'm sure I missed something

Still debating on getting the extended draw bar or not.

Nice list of options there mate. Just on the stereo and speakers, just get a wireless speaker and run your music through your phone or ipad. Not only will it be cheaper but you then have the portability with the speaker and not necessarily need to be sitting right at your van.

One thing I read about the extended draw bar is that it can reduce clearance when going over bumps, but makes it easier to reverse. Extra real estate on draw bar is main advantage I wanted.

Have a think about where you want the gas located on draw bar. Mine is further forward than I wanted.

I really appreciate getting shelves in wardrobe too.

Yeah this is one option I thought of a fair bit, in the end I thought with the money I'm spending I may as we'll get it I think it was only an additional $250. I rather regret getting that not .
But I do like your idea.

I probably would have got it if the funds had stretched but do find the portability great. Will be a ripper setup and looking forward to seeing some pics

not to sure on the tyres comment, having seen jayco build quality I hope the IND susp is not made by them

I really like jayco as the product is well positioned in the price point and is good value for money ..but if they up and up the price I think they will become less value for money.

Just out of curiosity what car will you be towing it with offroad.

Anyway congrats

on your new purchase, be good to see some pics of the new model once out

Coil spring - now that should be an improvement over the current independent offered that still has the same stiff leaf spring on each side

Re clearance, unless the tow vehicle has the same underbode centre clearance with no diff pumpkins to drag on sand tracks, it's a bit off a moot point really?
Tyres last longer? Can't buy into that one. You will not wear out a set of tyres on a camper before they get old and hard. (6+ yrs).
I covered 25,000k around Oz in the first year of ownership in mine, you can barely see any wear. When I replace them, they will be far from bald..

Congrats on the purchase - you won't regret it. Did they increase the prices much over current models?

I have a Hawk, which is the same size as Eagle, different layout.
Re the kids bed, The Eagle/Hawk have the double bed at 4ft, and the swan's double bed is 4ft 6. so a bit bigger. This won't really matter now, but when kids get a bit older, they will appreciate the larger double bed at their end.
Resale appears relative, given the higher initial cost of the swan. My 2011 (Jan) Hawk OB was $23.5k new (last of 2010 dealer stock), and I'm pretty sure I could get close to that back selling it nearly 3yrs down the track.
Also, If you intend to store the camper undercover, make sure the longer swan will fit

Independent gives a better ride for the stuff you have in the trailer and behaves better as a tow vehicle.

Other than that no benefits - certainly none for offroading as you point out - the trailer articulates at the hitch.

I suppose another advantage is that I store all my excess timber and other stuff under my camper when it's parked at home - and the lack of an axle means I can stack the stuff a bit higher

I dont think they make the suspension in the current models, all Alko gear so I would assume that the independent is also Alko or some other off the shelf brand.

I agree with Chester, I dont fully understand the obsession with it, to me is a 'nice to have' rather than a 'need to have and will pay extra for'

Pretty sure the same bloke has been there for a long time... my 2003 Dove has the same signature marks as some of the newer ones I have seen

Hey guys,

As for tyres chewing out more on single axel setup, it was on a discovery channel on different suspension show there made and how they perform. As for the tug, I've got a 1995 turbo diesel 80 series landcruiser.
