Ok,

So my wife had her 45,000km service on her 2012 Kia Sorento 2.2l Diesel today

Lube mobile charged $500, which included Air filter $80 and "Premium Oil" $180.

Is that a fair price??

I have only ever used Lube Mobile once. Found them no cheaper than the main stealer........................despite the fact they have minimal overheads compared a garage. They did not use 'genuine' spares either.

Ask them what brand it is and tell them to you'll buy some from the local store and they can come pick it up and give you the difference in $

20ltrs of good diesel oil (EG: Shell Rimula X) aint much over $100/130

Have to agree, that oil is very exxy. If its a standard service, dealerships (and I presume Lube Mobile) should be able to give you the price when you book in.

Yep, 5L = $46.99 x 2 in the current Repco catalogue.
I'd be calling their head office and complaining.

Maybe list everything on the invoice so we can see how the costs have been applied.  $180 for oil is okay if it includes his margin (which he's entitled too), disposal of old oil and labour.
Expect to a pay a premium for these come to you services.

Agreed, if tha price includes disposal etc etc but if it is solely oil only then that is about 91% mark up which I way excessive.  I would expect 15-20% mark up

It was $180 ex GST, so nearly $200 for oil.

How much oil does the Kia take? 6 litres?

$500 bloody hell.

A service on my 500HP Mack Truck isn't that much, $200 for oil is just crazy it shouldn't be more than $70 even then thats a bit rich as they would buy in bulk therefore reducing the price, cricky I think it's $200 for 20lts of "premium oil" for said truck.

seems odd they charge you labour then charge to change the air filter then the price of the airfilter whats with that?

+1 whats with that,
also whats the differance between Van consumables and consumables?

I'd be ringing them up and asking them to justify that invoice

Can't imagine it taking any more than 7 litres?  They come in 5 litre containers, did he give you the leftovers?
Looking at the invoice, he's got about 100% mark up on the oil...

Without knowing the car, the air filter might be fair job to change, hence the separate labour charge?

Maybe give the bloke a call for a please explain?

My mate runs his own workshop and gone are the days of bulk buying oil for most general workshops that do a wide range of cars.
He has a large tank that gets pumped full of a mineral 15/40w, as that covers most basic cars.  Most newer cars a pretty oil specific, so he generally buys retail pack oil as needed for each service.  Maybe not the most economical way, but at $1200+ for a 205L drum of full syn oil, it's alot of money tied up in slow moving stock.  Add to it, he has quite a few customers that a specific about the brand of oil they want.

It is odd why he would list it separately?  Some blokes sometimes just quote directly out of VACC price books and the likes, maybe that is what is listed?  Spin it anyway he likes, $200 for 7ish litres of oil is taking the pi$$.

I would not think that a 2.2l engine would hold any more than 5l of oil, however I am happy to be proven wrong. Supercheap sell the oil for $53.50  http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Penrite-Enviro-Engine-Oil-5W-40-5-Litre.aspx?pid=324403#Cross

A service on my 2009 lancer aspire is normally $250 to $300. No offense but its a Kia not a high performance car.

Seems very expensive, but I suppose you have to pay for them to come to you somewhere in the price.

Yep reading that invoice it seems you have been done on materials. Not sure why they would list the air filter separate. Labour is labour

Think I worked out the air filter labour.  It says 45k log book service.  I'd say the air filter is not part of the log book 45k service, but on inspection it need replacing?  Looks like 1.5 hours is allocated for the 45k service (roughly $105ph inc GST) and 15 minutes for the air filter. Hence it's listed as an extra.

According to Penrite, 6.7 litres for a Kia.
