Itinerary ideas here
« on: August 21, 2013, 08:42:35 PM »
Ok so it,s time to start building the itinerary..

Based upon some reading 4 nights out and 4 back seems to be a good comfortable pace so that's 8 nights days in the desert with up to 2 at MT dare and surrounds.  This would give people time to THOUGHTS ?  More /less ect

As far as the actual crossing goes Im still researching and plan on speaking to some friends soon who have done it a couple of times for their thoughts, so I dodnt have any input to offer there, but for us leaving from Tassie or Port Melbourne, what would work for us is to make our way to Birdsville via a couple of the corners and meet the QLD and NSW people there I guess?

We would also only be looking at this trip as only being about a 2 week or so holiday. So I guess a few days getting up there, 4 nights or whatever is decided to cross one way and then a few days getting back.

We have done the western side of the simpson just recently and a couple of years ago so there is not a lot more we would want to spend too much time doing once crossed. I am not sure at this stage if we would go back across, so we would most likely just head back home once everyone else departs to return.

I can recommend going out to Old Andado Station and obviously Mt Dare pub once on the Western side.

More to follow as info comes to hand.

Just did some map study,

If we made INAMINKA our meet point this would be closer for southern members .

we could then enter via the public access road heading north past walkers crossing and intersecting the Birdsville track turning west then north onto the WARBURTON TRACK and intersect the RIG ROAD travel through on this and then intersect the FRENCH LINE just outside PURNI BORE and then into MT DARE. Issue I see here is Fuel as the KMS are up there at about 800kms inaminka to mt dare. and could pose problems.

Or meet INAMINKA and then onto B/ville fuel up and then onto QAA line as per norm.

Some good information here:  http://www.exploroz.com/TrekNotes/Deserts/Simpson_Desert.aspx

We weren't planning on this trip so soon, so I don't have much info at the moment, but will be looking into it a bit more in the near future and hopefully can make some useful contributions.

Cheers,

Chuyen

My only concern with going in from the bottom end is the extra KMS added on, but the southern tracks seem to offer the best variety and then for those not heading back west to east they may miss Birdsville.

So not sure will have to see what everyone thinks,

Am happy to come out at INAMINKA on the return west to east , we could still all meet at Inaminka stay 1 night there then up to B/V a night or 2 then out from there.

Day 1 -Meet Inaminka
Day 2 Inaminka to Walkers crossing (camp to be confirmed) 150-180KMS will be short to give a little recovery from the big days put in to get to inaminka so short day will be good.
Day 3 - walkers crossing to B/Ville 225km (more recoevry and short day )
Day 4 - B/Ville. pre departure check and fuel up day etc look around ect
Day 5 B/Ville into simmo (QAA line to popel)
Day 6 Simmo (knolls track onto WAA line)
Day 7 Simmo (WAA line)
Day 8 Simmo (French line)Purni bore
day 9 Simmo  (french line) dallhousie
Day 10 Mt dare
Day 11 Mt Dare
Day 12 Head back through Simmo French line onto RIG Road
Day 13 Simmo Macumbba oil well on RIG
Day 14 Simmo Poolwanna oil well on RIG
Day 15 Simmo Rig road onto K1 back to popell
Day 16 B/Ville

Places listed as are just for reference on estimated distances and proposed route actual camp site are anyone's guess but the oil wells are easy to trace on the map .

This totals around 10 nights in the desert with 2 x 2 night stays B/Ville & Mt Dare.

Those not wishing to return west to east can head off from Mt dare.

Groups can tee up travel to inaminka .

Thoughts ;D ;D

[

we can just push from INAMINKA to b/ville and gain an extra day to spending the desert which looks good too but 350km trip . Average 70kph 5 hrs ?

If all are happy with this lets look at locking in this

Thoughts ?

I will probably only have the time to go one way, I've heard west to east is easiest. Any chance to swap the route?

Im hoping to have a good chat to some mates who have done the simpson several times next weekend so ill have more to offer then but Dalhousie is another option as everyone likes a swim in the hot springs although they do not allow fires there anymore :(
I think I read on here that the pub at Birdsville is far better than anything else on offer?

Mt Dare allows fires even though Dave is within the national park. 3 Oclock creek is also an option worth considering. I can tell you with certainty that the mozzies at Dalhousie are killers, they eat through clothes so bring some good repellant oh and did I mention the flues during the day??

For those that are leaving to go home and not crossing again, I wouldnt mind spending a night at the new accommodation at Hamilton Station purely to inject some money their way as they are fantastic people and saved me big time a few weeks ago.

I doubt we'd be looking at crossing again, as seeing we're both going in the same direction and I have no idea about what's about, I'll probably just follow you.
