Track suggestions out of Licola
« on: August 08, 2013, 07:07:32 PM »
Some may have read my threads in the touring section about our pending trip to the high country later in the year. I have planned several days of camping at the Wellington river camping area. I am looking at suggestions on tracks to do whilst we are there. I already have planned the Butcher country loop which will be a big day. Anything either west, east or south of Licola would be awesome. Ive searched the net but have come up with nothing. I have a detailed map of the high country so can follow the track names if you are keen to share where you have driven. Thanks heaps. I guess if the Admins deem this thread to be in the wrong section i'm sure they'll move it cheers.

G'day Rocky,

Lots of places to check out if you're base camped in one of the Wellington River Camps. Some of the better tracks would be;

Butcher Country

Caladonia River Track (runs almost parallel to Butcher)

Mt Wellington out to Millers Hut and the Sentinels

Mt Margaret Track (from in the National Park and then either north to the B1 Track or south to Hickey's Creek)

Kelly's Lane - nice easy drive but with a few huts to check out.

All bar the Mt Wellington Tracks can be done as a loop. Don't forget Billy Goats, there is a loop you can do but last time we checked the river crossing was out on the alternate track near Rock of Gibralter off the Wonnangatta Road)

If you need track conditions closer to the time give me a yell - we're always up around the Licola/Dargo areas. If you need a 'guide' I might be available too for a day or so!  ;D

Tim

PS - some good tracks off the Jamieson Road too!

Agree with Tim.

Kelly's Lane is a nice drive and Billy Goats is good fun.

Yeah I was going to say Billy Goats into Caledonia into Butcher Country, gives you a bit of everything in the High Country all in one trip.

Burgoynes Gap Track is another good one. Last time I was up there, a few years ago now, there was some challenging sections.

Also, it's a bit further out than Licola, more Dargo way, but Blue Rag Range Track is a great track to do.
The track from Wonnangatta into Dargo is also great, going via Herne Spur Track. Wonnangatta is a great camping area.
