Parents anguish over a Childs 18th birthday
« on: July 28, 2013, 07:44:53 AM »
I have to share this with you.
A good friend eldest is having her 18th, so Mum goes into overdive fuss mode.
Asking the million questions of what the daughter would want for her birthday, “I wont plan anything, it is what you want” says mum.
Daughter replies, “just a quiet one at home with my friends is what I want”.
So food, cakes agreed on, younger brother told to move out for the night.
Mum decides to get a selection of Vodka Cruisers to have on hand, 5 x 4 packs of different flavors, with the intention of grabbing more should the night be going well.

Well, you can imagine Mums disgust when the morning comes and a total of 2 drinks have been consumed. Yep, 2 only cans, 1 of which had some in the can still.

“Damn rebellious kids she complains now, what this world coming too???
I never behaved like that when I was her age!!!!”

They probably had a sip of the drink to swallow the pills.

Did mum actually ask what flavours they drink? Would speewa, for example, drink anything other than a green can?

Is she the eldest daughter? Experience in our family is that the second one will make up for it!

Love them both to death  :cup:

Our son has just turned 18 and had a similar experience.  Good on em.  From my experience alcohol is the worst social drug we have so our kids suddenly realising how stupid getting drunk may be a good thing.

Ha!  No, stopped those shenanigans years ago. Certainly gave it a nudge back in the day but just the odd glass of vino or a cold beer on a hot day, these days.  Life is too short and there's far too much to explore than to be suffering from a hangover!

And just to keep the thread on track... it is great to see that young people are making good decisions about alcohol.  At least in our time there was no such thing as UDLs or pre-loading. It was Emu Export or Wild Peach Cooler for us (ughhh). There are so many get-drunk-quick options now and so it is fab to hear that your young'uns are being smart  :cup:

Our daughter who turned eighteen just on a year back now was the same. I think #1 son is going to give it a red hot shot come december when its his turn.
#2 son is 16 soon, I think he will be a quiet one as well.
#2 daughter is still only 10, we are getting worried about this one, her and the little lass next door are already getting into
mischief, I have a sense of things going off tap around 16 - 18  :-[

I'm glad my sarcasm was seen though here.
Yes, my friends are blessed with a very responsible young lady, she is excelling at Uni in a discipline which is a typical male thing to be doing. She has a cool looking car, but not interested in drivin git around and rathers the bus....

Its funny, I remember in my days down the pub after work, as an apprentice, always having a laugh at the 1 guy who had no money, as he was buying a house for way less than $10,000 at Scott's head in NSW on a large plot of land overlooking the ocean. Now who is laughing........ I just wish my parents steered me the same way.
Mine are 8 and 4 (Twins), so I got a way to go yet before the worries begin.

Some funny replies......

Better anguish over buying alco pops not getting drunk, thanspending time in A&E or worse at the morgue cause things got out if hand.

Sad when you have to worry about gatecrashers and Facebook invites and damaged property or gang fights.

Be blessed they had a quiet night.

Better than remembering it for all the wrong reasons.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

No. 1 son had a big 18th. We ended up hiring the local community centre as we didn't want his "mates" at our house. We also hired a security guard and informed the Police of the party. When there were more gate crashers milling around the outside of the venue (the security guard worked) we called the cops. They turned up and very pleasantly told them they are not going to get in so they may as well go elsewhere. Worked a treat. One of the girls commented at the end of the party that it was the first 18th she had been to where there wasn't a fight!!!

No. 2 son had his 18th at home with half a dozen friends. Fair bit drunk on the evening but nothing stupid and no troubles.

No. 1 daughter is going to be a handful in 5 years time!!!
