Pest control
« on: May 07, 2013, 11:03:21 PM »
After our recent trip to Lake Lyell we brought home a couple of crawly beetles on the camper - to be expected I know BUT I'm not overly fond of bugs and don't really want them in my bed either. So tell me.... Do you douse your camper in bug spray each time you camp as you're packing up? And will household spray do the job?

I'd be a bit worried if the bug spray would effect the canvas or maybe the canvas's waterproofing.  Just a thought.

We just usually use a shoe (was going to say thong but figured Jeepers would get all excited again  ;D)

Last time I was at Lake Lyell all I brought home was a cold and a buggered outboard.  We camped on the other side of the Lake and had to ferry over all of the food, swags, tent beer, people etc over two trips.  The outboard failed during the trip and i had to ferry everything back using the little electric motor. Half way across on the return second trip the battery ran out of steam and we had to try and paddle against 1 foot high waves and 30 knot winds.  Eventually got to the other side but no where near the boat ramp.

Muzza that sounds like a fun trip (not).

As for the shoe, I used that when I saw the bugs. It was the ones that came home with us that I haven't found yet that I am worried about.

Think I might just give the inside a light bug spray before we pack up at each place we go to just to make sure we don't bring home any unwelcome travellers.

There's a product called "Webzone" which is an inceciticide for crops.  It's as dear as poison, but a 1 litre bottle will last for years if only using it around the hose or camp.

It's safe for "food preparation areas" and dosn't smell too bad, but it's great for killing all sorts of bugs and keeping flies and mozzies and sandflies away.

I have a 9 litre spray bottle of it made up and I do around the house and farm to keep the redbacks down and fleas and ticks around the dog  area.

Spray it under outdoor tables and chairs and that will keep flies away for a few hours at least.  Spray it inside the bottom of the tinnie when out fishing and it'll keep mozzies and sandflies away.
It's a residual type spray, so if you spray it around the wheels and legs of the camper and around the edge of the room area , it'll keep creepy crawlies out of the tent and trailer.

No good for bees so dont spray it anywhere that bees might be.

Cheers

Then I feel your pain.

Missus Marschy  is scared of anything that crawls and she's from FNQ! Thankfully the insects down here in South Oz aren't big enough to saddle or as prolific.

I've had issues with ants from time to time. When that has happened, I've just sprayed a surface spray around the edges of the floor and benches when I've been packing it up. W always make sure we wipe the benches down before we use them after setting it back up again.

Hi Socks

The stock and station agents  / rural supply places should have it.

Here's the website:

http://www.webcot.com.au/Rural_Control/Insect_Control_files/WebZone%20pmanual.pdf

There's contact details there for the distributor, so they should be able to tell you where you can get it near your place.
