Went Camping & Came Home Early
« on: April 28, 2013, 09:05:05 AM »
Went camping to Bramston Beach over the weekend with the three month old baby, we were with friends and their eight year old girls, the baby kept being woken up by the girls doing what eight year old girls do, it was a bit too hot for the baby so he was sweltering in his wrap, then the bats kept him awake all night, so we were kept awake all night.

In the end we put it in the 'too hard basket' and came home early. Next time it will be Tinaroo, it's cooler, less noisy as there are no bats and everyone is a lot more spaced out, and because its cooler you can zip up the tent Turing the day so it's pitch black and the baby sleeps.

It's funny how babies change things, we used to stay up late with these same friends chatting and having a few drinks when we were camping, this time we retired to bed at 8.00pm!

You live and learn.

Keep at it Baz, it is worth it in the end, once they are used to it.

Exactly what Crackacoldie said, was half way thru typing the same reply when I seen his come in, we are going thru it with my grandson at the moment, tough on my daughter but every trip he is getting a bit more sleep. Had my kids away at that age and they still going away with us in their mid twenties, wouldnt miss it for quids. Dont know what your power set up is like but we got a small 12 volt fan for him, works wonders for getting off to sleep

We've been where you are Baz and what everyone says here is spot on.

The little one will need some time to adapt to your lifestyle. If camping is in your DNA then be patient and give them plenty of time to get used to it.

My grandson on the first night of a planned 5 day trip wanted to go home.
Cause : no internet access/xbox/tv/dvd player could have throttled him. Next morning all good again.
That night, all on again. Lasted 4 days and 3 nights, by that stage the whining of a night time had just got too much, even though it had reduced heaps.
Now I take a laptop which we can watch a dvd or he can play a game or two on (rarely gets used past the first night).
When I was packing up he asked my WHY, almost pissed my pants laughing. ken

for ours the plan was a warm bath, the biggest most absorbant disposable nappy we could get away with, a big feed, and they were virtually conked out after that. Noting would keep them awake......

for a while.............

Number 1 would sleep through.. Number 2 was more of an early riser

Is it worth getting bubs used to noise when sleeping? My wife used to have our two sleep in front of the Telly during the day with vacuum going and didn't try to be quiet. Both sleep no matter the noise. It's a tough game no matter what with little ones.....:-)

Or little boys is nearly 10 months now,his first trip he was only 3 months of age and it was very cold at night.
We found he slept better in the camper than he does at home,I think getting lots of fresh air tires us all out.
He has now been away for at least 5 weekends as well as a 3 week trip with a rolling camp over easter in the camper,he is getting used to it now and as longs as you make it fun for them they will always want more.
For sure its much more work when they are little, but it does get better...........wait till your away and they are cutting teeth.

Never give up. My best memories was when I was very young camping out near Bourke NSW.

Cheers guys, we will keep plugging away, we are off to Broadwater in a few weeks so we will see how we go then.

On another note having children changes what's on your 'if I won the lottery' wish list, it was an Aussie Swag, now it would be a Complete Campsite hard top / caravan. Just pull up and open the door, no more drying out wet canvas when you get home from camping, and trying to stop the baby screaming when you are setting up!

He he that brings back memories of how we cut our honeymoon (camping trip in WA) short to buy a Troopie (in place of a Ute) because we thought maybe we wanted lots of kids  ;D *we ended up with 2 instead of 7 lol

We didn't do much (any?) camping while ours were really liittle, did quite a bit of traveling (moving from WA to Qld to NSW to WA) up until school age. Now they're 8 and 10 and a good age to remember more of the exciting time so we're planning a big trip (4-6 weeks) at least every couple of years all going well, and shorter trips between. I do remember going on a camping trip with family when our first was 3 months old, camping on the beach and it was really windy and he was getting sand blown in his face all the time, not the most pleasant memory!

It seems to be not too bad (to travel long distances) when they're under 3 and they mostly sleep eat and play a little, then the toddler stage can be a little tricky, and school age onwards seems to be easier in some ways, more interesting and challenging in others. I must say digital devices (Nintendo DS, iPods etc certainly do buy some quiet time when necessary).

I guess if the baby has changed your life it probably means you're being a good parent :) It's funny how everyone else seems to have perfect babies though...I never had one of those that slept through the night from weeks 6 or whatever lol mine woke every 3 hours probably for at least a year! But theyve turned out to be pretty good kids, they love it when we go away and they get to sleep in their swags and we also look forward to hopefully taking them somewhere overseas one day.
