Kogan Mobile
« on: January 07, 2013, 06:20:53 AM »
Kogan, been around for a long time now,  but now there into the mobile market, have some cheap plans there also.
considering it as a back up come mobile internet option.
$29 a month (or better) unlimited calls and 6GB data..... sounds a bit to good to be true. there using the telstra network so coverage should be good.
Anyone using them yet? your thoughts people ?

It is...

If you read the fine print using part of Telstra's Mobile Network don't expect coverage to be the same as the Telstra network.

Hey Mr. BHG,

Looks OK for local coverage. Not so good for travelling.

Have you checked the coverage map for your area?

Maybe Telstra is offering specials to third parties on their 3G network now that they are pushing their 4G.

What are you thinking regarding a mobile internet option? Smartphone whilst out and about locally?

coverage looks ok,, speeds for 3g are caped going by feed back, but still seem ok, i am using Virgin at the mo, (optus). don't have any major issues with them. coverage in my home area leaves a lot to be desired  at times..
But with Kogan offering 6Gb and unlimited calls etc, it sounds ok as a back up.
Was/am using telstra mobile internet for back up now, $150 a year, but i'm sure its gone up in price now.
i'm not looking for 100%, as i know i will never get it no matter who you use.
At 29 bucks. i'll give it a go.  if it's ok. i'll top it up as i need it..

Sorry John just noticed the bit on the end, i have a modem under the seat in the ute, and it serves me well, so i can use laptop and phone when needed.

A relative has been using them for a couple of weeks now.  He's very happy but is metro based so not sure on the coverage issue.

Guy here at work has just signed with Koganmobile. He reckons it is only using the old 3g network as they don't offer 4g at all even though it is through Telstra. He's happy with it so far.

Would not expect anyone to have 4g . Telstra is not going to share that round yet, besides 4g only around the city at this stage,
looking at the coverage of Kogan compared to Teltsra on 3g. there seems to be bugger all difference.

I have signed up..and yes it uses the Telstra 3G network only. So those interested to use the 4G city central network, you are out of luck.

But saying that..I am able to stream of youtube or internet without any caching etc.

The only hitch is you have to supply your own handset..but you can get those cheap off Kogan as well.

Forgetting 4G for a second - this kogan deal apparently does not have the same coverage as NextG although it seems to use the same towers for the most part - just not all of them.  There's a long discussion on whirlpool.
So basically beware - you may not get coverage where you expect (ie. where someone with Telstra does) or it may be at lower speed for data.

4g only around the city at this stage

I get 4G in Roma, was in Caloundra the other day and got 4G, had 4G camping in the gold coast over christmas....currently back in Brisbane....3G.

I think if you never leave a capitol city then Kogan will be as good as any (unless you want 4G)...having said that we are counting the days to dump the wifes Vodafone...so many drop outs

There is an absolute stack of comments there. It goes on and on. The following link goes to just part 2 of the discussion.

Really, for $20 or so, just do it and see how it goes.

It is interesting comparing the Telstra and Kogan coverage maps.

Yep, you hit the nail on the head John. it's worth a try.. i will not be porting my mobile number.! As it stands i get fair to good coverage with Virgin (Optus). and the cost is reasonable, well as far as mobile cost's go.!
I have sent away for the sim, should be here within the next few days. will activate it on one of my old phones till i unlock the S3.
Will give it a work out around the metro area as i travel between jobs.
so for  cost of postage and sim   $4.95
and the cost of 1 months access $29.00
                                                 +$33.95
I'll take the gamble

Saw Kogan recently advertised on one these current affair shows one night recently.

Currently pay $39.90 per month, for 'Amaysim' Unlimited. ($37.90 with my wifes staff discount)
Amaysim Uses Optus network. Not yet had a problem with the coverage. Data seems to be ok, call quality seems ok. B
4gb per month, unlimited calls, text sms/mms.
Use the 4gb with tethering on my phone to use pc/laptop as currently using.
een using for about a year now.

The 6gb from Kogan, for cheaper cost per month definitly looks interesting.......... (same unlimited calls/text sms-mms etc)

(Virgin is non existant here, Telstra is too expensive, Optus coverage currently using)
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Ok, Sim arrived, took 24 hours to get it activated.! could be a pain if needed in a hurry..
so far coverage has been good. speeds around 3mbs download .. i can live with that, get about the same with virgin.
At the moment this laptop is tethered to the phone and running well...
Will pick up a cheap Android phone so i can use it more often...
but it's main function will be running in the modem in the ute for mobile internet use..

I had Amaysim for one of my phones and it was useless as tits on a bull, when you left the major centres but that is typical of anything to do with Optus. ;)
