It's hard to buy a really crap guitar these days, but I would consider having it set up correctly. I spent $65 recently having my guitars set up and it has made my playing MUCH easier (and hence I'm making better progress than I was. Even my wife would might agree  ;D). The music shop would lower the string to bring them close to the fret board (called lowering the action) and that has a significant impact.

This x 1000. Set up makes even a cheap guitar enjoyable to play. Buy what you can afford, then take it to a guitar pro and get a proper setup.

Well in the end, I took him down to the store and let him choose what he wanted.

Of course his first choice was $2300.... which met with the NO ****IN WAY CLOWN response.

So he ended up with a good Black Electric Guitar + Amp + handful of picks + carry bag and 2 lessons thrown in.. $25/half hour for more.
It was a little more than I intended paying, but poppy chucked to get him what he wanted...

With a gentle prod (EG: me wanting to have a turn), hes out there now practicing. Hes nearly got the first 1/2 of this done.

Yea, personally not a fan of it. Like the sound of the firewood myself.

We was recently camping and some frozen dog was going thru a bandsaw.. quite annoying.

So far so good.. he has been doing lessons from the shop he got guitar from, and likes the teacher, who is a bit of a wild dude... :)

Apart from pootube, theres a few others found that are reasonable.

This looks great from the demos that you see.

I'm still trying to get my fingers to work properly.  The fingerboard is such a hard thing to operate.  I think I'm Guitar-Dyslexic  ;D   Maybe I'd do better with a much smaller version?

Have you considered a baritone ukulele. Has the same tuning as a six string, minus the A and low E strings. Great fun to play, much easier to throw in the car when camping, easier to do bar chords, sound sweet as. I have one for sale with hardcase if anyone is interested, with piezo pickup.

How much does such a thing sell for?

(asks) Kit_e (who's guitar cost her $49.95).

Mine cost about $300. The actual uke was about $150, plus another $100 to get the pickup installed, and about another $50 for the hardcase, but I'd let it go for $100.

You can get varying quality baritone ukes starting from as little as $20 bucks. The good thing about them is the chords are the same as a 6 string, but minus the two thickest strings, so there is  no having to remember different chords structures, unlike sopranos and concert ukes. The strings are nylon and are spaced like a nylon (nice and wide).

They make really cool looking ukes nowadays as well. Les Paul look-alikes and other electrics

Stick with it.

One day it will all COME TOGETHER and be EASY.

And use the pads, not the points of the fingers.

...fail...

I broke a middle finger years ago in a bike bingle. The specialist paid close attention to getting the alignment right.
Did a good job, too...........but I still don't play guitar.......
