From what I understand, the motels are booked out in Cairns, there are road closed around a lot of the beaches, and the range lookouts.
I heard today the police intended to tow any vehicle parking in the closed areas if found parked where they should not.

I would have loved to come up, there is a marathon and 1/2 marathon event being held on the same day in Port Douglas, calling it the solar eclipse marathon. I really wanted to do the 1/2 but @ $315 entry fee + trying to find accommodation was a big expense way too close to xmas.

Hope you enjoy the eclipse up there :)

Must be a new way to trial Daylight Savings ... turn off the sun for a short time!  LOL!  It would be nice, but I'm sure my boss is expecting me to be working that day ... alas.   :'(

Funny,
Met an Italian guy in Coles Bay, Tasmania .
He chases the solar eclipses all over the world.
His mode a transport was one of those folding bikes. I was surprised how it was holding up.

Talk about making a killing with the Eclipse. Theres a big gathering at Palmer River. approx 10,000 people. Price is $350.  ???

Check out the website. There are hippies everywhere,

Every portable toilet from Townsville to Cairns has been taken.

Apparantly Dan Muphys bottle shops have nearly run out of beer.

Apparently Dan Muphys bottle shops have nearly run out of beer.

Isn't it like 5.30 in the morning.  Wonder how many of them will wake up in time after a big night on the grog.

Well we all know that they don't often get it right, but the weather bureau are saying that the eclipse will be a bit of a fizzer because they have predicted cloud and rain. Cairns hasn't seen the sun today and it seems the conditions will continue.
Obviously it will get dark and cool off as the moon crosses in front of the sun - but as for viewing - well who knows.

Mate most of them will still be going strong because of the pills and the powders.
Half of Noosa is going to be up there.
Cheers Nomad.

I for one hope they get it wrong.
Morag and I have a perfect view from our back patio and are really looking forward to seeing it.
As we live in Edmonton and I work at Smithfield I sure as heck am NOT looking forward to the drive to work.We had so much extra traffic last week and it is getting worse the closer we get to the day of the eclipse.

+1 there Bill - I don't have as long a drive a you do, but my work is right in town, three blocks back from the esplanade. I don't think anything will be going in or out of there for most of the day.

I hope it's a nice morning. We're currently running 50/50 - Saturday was rainy, Sunday was perfect, today is raining. If the pattern continues, it doesn't look good for Wednesday :) .

A mate of mine is coming up for it. He couldn't get flights in/out of Cairns, so is flying into Townsville on the 13th, picking up his rental car and driving to Cairns - he gets in around midnight. He leaves around 10am to head back to TSV. He's keener than I'd be, but it is in his field of expertise.

Got to hand it to the Palmer River guy - he's going to make a killing out of it. I was talking to a bloke who was talking to a bloke, etc, apparently the spot where they're holding the festival is just in a paddock on the cattle property. There's a dam in the middle, but no running water/creeks. This friend-of-a-friend had done a beer delivery out there, and was aghast at the lack of toilets, and the fact that it's just 10,000 people in a cow paddock for 10 days. If it's dry, it'll be messy, but if it rains...

No idea on how true it is, but I've heard the cops have contingency plans to shut down the Capt Cook highway if things get too busy/stupid with people stopping on the road. Same deal for the beaches - once they get full they'll close the access roads in off the highway, and no one gets in or out until the rest of the traffic settles down. Might be a long day for some people if that's the case. They're talking about 200+ busses heading up the Capt Cook on the morning, so...

Cheers!
Matto :)

On Newell Beach this-morning at 5:45am there were hundreds of people with cameras & tripods setup doing a 'trial run' for tomorrow.  They even had the high tide line marked with tape.  I'm going to have to climb a tree in my backyard to see it at this rate. >:( Which reminds me. Must get some of those eclipse sunglasses 8)
