Rant for today - bottles and cans in fireplaces.

you can get home brew PET screw top bottles. Buy some and go to somewhere like the Beer Factory

and put down a batch of your favorite. Using plastic bottles will save weight (compared to glass) and you will not get breakages plus you drink your favorite and not just the couple that are available in cans.

I tried to buy beer in cans for this exact reason, but the big chains don't stock much beer in cas these days, only VB and XXXX. Even if you cannot have a fire and burn them, cans are easier to squash and carry out as rubbish.

I HATE setting up at a nice camp site and there is the remnants of the previous campers rubbish in the fire pit. If you can take it in with you, you can take it out with you.

This is my biggest hate.
And I do have a few hates that get my blood boiling, but rubbish is the biggest.
We are so fortunate to live in an awesome country where it really isn't a problem to dispose of rubbish, yet some see fit to think others will clean up after them.

Well cans DO NOT burn away to nothing, they melt to a blob(albeit a small blob) as they started before they became a can(molten aluminum)

Put your cans in a bag and take them with you to a bin if there are no bins where you are, I always drink from bottles, I put my empties in a bag and take them with me till I see a bin or just put them in our bin at home, it's the whole reason we have a rear wheel rubbish bag, to take our rubbish with us, it's not that hard really.

Agree with all that is said above.
Littering is a big pet hate and really grinds my gears. Moving back into our house after being rented and I dig around the garden and find 2 garbage bags size of rubbish littered. The renters probably had fires in the garden or just chucked waste everywhere. Judging by state of garden and house after we moved back in, anythings possible.
Disgusting.

I heard the other day that when your tile fire is hot and roaring, throwing in an aluminium can will help the chimney and flue to not gum or wax (soot) up??

Any truth to this?

Works very well, beneficial for me in several ways, 1. Cleans flue, don't have to get up on roof. 2. Get to drink contents of can, 3. Get to sit in front of fire and prepare more cans for burning

What the hell.  Yes they do burn away to nothing.  I've done it hundreds of times, nothing left in the pit.  Think whatever you like but I'll still keep doing it.

The fact is, that you should not be burning them.  At the very least I'm sure that your friends sitting around the fire do not want to inhale the burning paint fumes. 

I'm certain that you have space to take the crushed cans home, how else did you get them there? You've also consumed all the weight in the products, so it's not like carrying these empty cans is going to affect your fuel efficiency.

I note that the caravan association encourage people to "join" one of these programs / watch the DVD / be good little campers (I just read one from 2011) ... just wondering why camper trailer associations don't??  Gee I hope some magazine editor is reading this and thinking it would be a great article for their next mag ... or to encourage readers to join up in some form like the cv group do.

Anyone can tell it's a great idea to be responsible ... and not with JUST GARBAGE or FAECES ...  being a smoker, I refuse to even leave cig butts behind on a campsite. 

You could learn something by visiting that site ... even just to humour me a bit.     Go On!
