what is the best paint
« on: July 01, 2012, 08:39:32 AM »
Righto, I'm almost finished the boat rack on the canvas Camelot and I'm looking for a paint system that can withstand the knocks and bumps. I'm kind of swaying towards a two pack Luxathane but I'm open to suggestions from those with far more knowledge in this field.

Im not an expert on paint,  but Hammertone is an easy DIY job to apply and to reapply over scratches. Only negative is you are limited to a small colour range.

Can't remember if it was here or somewhere else that said to use machinery quick dry enamel and add some 2pak hardner to make it more durable??

If your trailers out in the weather abit, I'd steer clear of hammertone.  Every trailer I've painted in this stuff has turned to a chalky mess inside 18 months.  Hammertones only advantage is that it needs almost zero prepwork other that a wipedown prior and it hides imperfections.  Hence why it's popular in the trailer industry!

Stick with an automotive finish if you have the skills and equipment to apply it, but they're only as durable as the prep work under it.

LIC 40 (gloss) LIC43 (semi gloss).  Being used on all John Deer, New Holland chassis's as well as crane hooks.  Once cured it is 4 times more durable that powdercoat.

It's a 2 pack polyuerethane enamel, tough as nails.

Thanks GU. I reckon I'll go with your suggestion. As I mentioned, I was swinging toward a two pack. Just wanted to get the best.

Thanks for this info as I'm looking for some paint for my chassis soon too. I'm concerned about spraying 2 pack paint at home for safety reasons. I reckon a respirator would be necessary, right?

Here's the MSDS for that paint: http://www.licindustrial.com.au/pdfs/msds/LIC40.pdf

I've painted super yacht's and lots and lots of industrial machinery over the years ,IE : steel , aluminum , fibreglass etc  it depends on what expense you want to go to really , go 2 pack it holds the gloss will last any where between 10-15 years its very durable  if you don't have all the correct tools , compressor  for the job and its only a small area to paint I'd take it to an industrial coaters , they usually paint it when they are doing another job saves a bit of money and time for you probably cost you a carton , or you can go buy your paint which will cost way more .
1st use a acid cleaner wash with fresh water and dry properly apply a light coat of etch primer then apply a2 - 3 coats of epoxy primer , after 24 hours apply 3 coats of 2 pack gloss or semi gloss , good luck .

When you spray paint , the air coming out of the spray gun atomises the paint into small particles messy stuff , I wouldn't paint the chassis I'd use a bitumen sealer and brush it on , less chip resistant and way less cheaper than the paint

Hi ,I,M an industrial spraypainter with 32 years exp and all my 4x4 racks ladders jerry can holders etc etc are sprayed with colourthane which is similar to luxathane and it is easy to touch up. Yes you do need a mask gloves and throwaway overalls. I would never use or recommend powdercoat.

Sell paint for a living these days, Industrial blaster painter in another life, and I think for the average Joe the best paint by a mile is Killrust epoxy enamel.
Be mindful though not all the Killrust branded gear is epoxy enamel. The Hammer finishes ain't and nor are any of the satin finishes.
I use the Gloss black under the camper and the tug even under the arches, magic gear gets absolutely smashed on Pilbara stone a gazillion k,s across the central rd,Goldfields ,Kimberley and hangs on superbly. Best bang for your buck, get it most places, safe to use at home and any mug can use it, spraypack, brush or cheapo conventional spray. You can even put it on without priming on well degreased oranged black steel and it will not move!
Catalysed urethane's, Acrylic enamels, polysiloxanes etc etc all great products but unless your in the trade, got the gear and all the rest its pretty much out of reach for most.
The other thing to note is that very few trailers are built with anti corrosion in mind. Poor design, engineering and construction contribute substantially to your pride and joy turning to a pile of ferric oxide. Stitch welding, inappropriate fixings, thin galv coatings lack of seam sealing etc in many cases will not allow full coating of the painted area making failure inevitable.
Do your prep and seam seal everything , check your fixings to ensure that you are not promoting a cathodic point for dissimilar metals and make sure you put sufficient film builds on particularly on edges and corners according to manufacturers directions, ergo read the bloody instructions!

I've used a product called "Por 15" on the floors of our HQ Holden, seems pretty good.

Google it and read up on it. A mate has just used it on his caravan chassis. Its weird stuff, you brush it on and it sort of finds its own level, looks almost, pretty much, sort of, as if its been sprayed when finished.
