I need more length
« on: June 22, 2012, 01:57:13 PM »
Hello people.
After serious thought, a few bashed knuckles and some swearing I have decided we need a longer draw bar on the CT.
There is too much gear on it for the space we have.
I want to build a new one entirely, and the old man reckons we should extend it, you know the old cut and shut.
To get away with that you'd have to run extra steel alongside, making it twice the weight, or at least stagger the join.
May as well be new all the way. Old farmers can't see the point in replacing stuff when you can bodgey it up.
Will someone here please help me explain to him why I don't want to butt weld two joins in my draw bar.

Because, no matter how good a welder you are - (and probably much better than me)!

In case of an accident, breakage, whatever, you dont want the body of your CT detaching from your vehicle and spearing some unsuspecting family of 6 coming the other way.

Then you dont want the ensuing legal battle/compensation claims/stress/divorce/etc.

That shoud do it!

my thoughts are that fatigue will eventually catch up with it and it will break and you will be left stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere, and if it causes an accident it wouldn't be a very nice feeling knowing it could have been different.

The other thought is wether it is illegal to do such a thing.

I own a farm and know all about bodgeying things up where it doesn't go any faster than 40 k/hr and isn't on the main roads. if I was you I wouldn't join the draw bar for any money.

I also work with my father who suggests many options on how He thinks things should be done, you just have to go with your own peace of mind and do what you want, the old man still won't agree but at least you will have the design mod as you would like it.

 All the best

Thanks, fellas.  Exactly what I am thinking. Just wanted something in writing, as it were.  Someone might want a cheap draw for a box trailer in town. To do all the extras on that job I will use near on the same amount of steel anyway.
It will be a while before it's done but I will put up some pics in the mods section.

Because by the time you cut and patch, it is quicker and easier to build a new A frame and a length of RHS shouldn't break the bank.
Been there, done it and learnt my lesson when we had the farm.

How much extra length are you looking for? For me, this would determine whether or not to build an entirely new frame or to cut the hitch off and insert 400mm of thick wall channel section (which can look very professional and allow you to alter the hitch height if necessary).

No one wants to hear about my welding, hence the attention grabbing title.  I am looking for a metre more on the draw.  Between the tow hitch on the Triton being slightly under the tray, and with a big toolbox, spare wheel and stoneguard fitted, there is not much room to operate the handbrake or the swing up jockey wheel without a bit of messing about.
GG, your extension looks the goods and I think it would be the quickest but with the jockey wheel being a swing up it might not work.  Have to get on with the tape measure and see.  Still leaning toward a new A frame.  All steel in gal will only be around $260, so not an issue.

Pics of us a Marsden, the closeup shows how much space we don't have.

Thanks again for the tips.

What GG has done is what I was intimating, but that's not going to work for 1 metre. Will your ramp over still be acceptable?

Looking at the pix you provided it appears to be a bolted on drawbar anyway. i would p!ss it off and redo a drawbar from RHS. i would start the new drawbar from back close to the front spring hangers and possibly put another RHS through the middle of the trailer.

Cheers!!
