Check the fork crown carefully - my brother's Z1s went about 12 years ago after they cracked... at 10 years old....

Thanks, I'm actually thinking of getting a bike shop to do the rebuild as they're a bit squelchy at the moment...

These are 22 years old now, and I raced them pretty hard for 6-7 years...

His were very early Z1's - they had the twin disc brake tabs!

I've ended up on some of the Retro bike pages (Much to wife's dismay) as my bike up until a few years ago was a 1999 model Cannondale.... it's still in the shed, and is one of the bikes I want to clean up this weekend.

Hey Paddler Ed

Think you might like my old bike as well. Bought as a frame only out of the back door of the factory in 2000.

Dragging out the multi-bike bike rack was becoming a pain when I was riding solo so I purchased the Yakima Singlespeed. It's nice and light and very sturdy, although there are no built-in options to mount license plate/lights. I built this plate/light mount yesterday as a prototype, I'll see how the ply holds up, I'll probably replace it with some thick plastic, I used conveyer rubber for my other rack.

Nice!  I'm into stainless for fabrication at the moment - finding it nice to work with, and can be sent straight to powder coat without passing zinc coating for rust prevention...

If you pump multiple coats of pressure pack into the ply it'll last years...  When I was fitting and servicing outboards, we only used painted ply.  My boat has a sheet that's 20 years old on it that's spent heaps of time in salt water, and still fine.

In this video i will be talking about the mountain bike I made in 2007 for my son Stephen Millyard to ride in the British National Down Hill series after spending a small fortune on derailiers, gear cables and chains the previous year when he was riding a conventional DH bike.
The Millyard Racing  001 bike solved all these problems by sealing the whole drive system inside the swinging arm out of harms way in an oil bath.
I will be making a more detailed part 2 video covering the 002 singles sided swinging arm version, with some riding and in depth review.
Thank you for watching my videos

Got an early mark this afternoon and decided to start the drivetrain swap on the two bikes. Put the Trek up first and removed the chain, rear wheel, cut the inner gear cable and took the derailleur and shifter off.  Grabbed the wheel and removed the 9 speed cassette as well. Next up was the Aldi bike and repeated what I did to the Trek. Cleaned all the 9 speed stuff up and fitted it to the Aldi bike with a new inner gear cable.
So now the Aldi bike has an 11-36t Shimano cassette, Shimano Altus derailleur and shifter and ProWheel 170mm cranks with a 34t chainring.  Just need to do a final adjustment on the derailleur and she's done. If it hasn't got enough gearing for Wifey I can always throw on a 11-40t Sunrace cassette for her.
Hopefully the new cranks and stuff will turn up tomorrow and I can put the Trek back together with the Deore stuff from the Aldi bike.
Cheers, Mike.

Sounds like good progress, make sure you setup and double check your limit screws. It is not fun trying to extract a chain from between the spokes and the cassette on the trail.

It is actually, on my son's bike from a bent mech hanger rather than limit screws.

Hey guys im looking at giving the roadie a rest and getting into the dark art of mountain biking

As it will also be my work commuter so will have to fill some road duties as well should i be going for a single or double chain ring up the front

The work commute is 24k round trip and i dont really care about speed as i only do it to not feel guilty about my beer consumption on the weekend

Looking at the Giant Talon 1 which i can get in a single or double up front or specialized Rockhopper Expert 29

Was just worried i may spin out the high gear with the single chain ring on the front

Definitely 1x, I'd also look at a short travel dually, more versatile for what you want. Something like the Scott Spark with lockout.

Hit the shops up for a Demo to ride for the weekend. Try before you buy. If you've not ridden a bike with a Sram drivetrain, it may not be you're cup of tea. My Trek Roscoe 8 has a 1x12 Sram NX (1 step above the SX specced on both those bikes you've listed) and I'm not a fan. I haven't ridden a 1x12 Shimano drivetrain but if it shifts like their 1x10 and 1x11 stuff I'd prefer it over the Sram. And lastly, air forks all the way. So much adjustability and way more comfy than the cheaper coil forks. Don't forget to have a look at Polygon, they do some nice bikes with good specs.
Just my 2c worth
Cheers, Mike.

Drivetrain swap complete
Bit of MuckyNutz action for Wifey's bike. Trek rides really nice now. Amazing how a nice drivetrain makes so much difference. Can't wait to take it back to old mate that sold me the bike. Reckons it couldn't be done.  Wacker.
Cheers, Mike.
