There is a restriction on bringing raw honey products into the country due to the risk of disease and pests. Things like varroa mite and colony collapse disorder  could cripple the Australian honey industry (much like the USA) .

As for interstate movement I believe that most states are still on an application basis.

Hi,
I use salt to get them off.

Didn't know about the honey to relieve the itching, though they don't bother me a lot.

cheers

Hi austastar,
Usually just burnt them off or pulled them off(getting my finger nails as close as possible to the skin) without a problem, had many leeches latch on over the years without a problem, as I get older  8) they tend to itch more.
Will carry some salt with us to help with removal on the kids.

Edit, That's removal of the leeches from the kids, not removal of the kids, don't know what does that  ;D

Honey is a great healer.

When I was 5, we were stopped on the roadside (family moved from s.a to QLD) and I stood on a broken bottle which sliced thro my tendon at the back of my ankle. Mum slathered honey on it and strapped it. I have no issue with it at all.

Let's not get carried away here.   If a wound is deep with the possibility of damage to underlying structures like tendons, it should be assessed by a doctor.   It's hard to comment on what might have been damaged on Becboo's ankle and tendons do heal if rested, but that is much less likely if they are "sliced thro".   Appropriate first aid would be to cover the wound with a non adherent dressing and apply pressure via a bandage to prevent bleeding.   As mentioned above, if it's more than trivial then it should be seen by a doctor.   You don't need to apply antiseptic to a wound like this and as a doctor I would much prefer to examine a wound that is not gummed up with honey or antiseptic creams.

I'm not knocking honey, but I don't want people to apply inappropriate first aid because they read it here.   (A bit like learning your recovery techniques from Colorado ads.)

I totally agree with Patr8Ol

Appropriate first aid first, however for small infections/cuts/rashes/bits, honey can work wonders (all without the need for antibiotics)

I agree Hairs

In my above statement I was relaying my experience. In no way was I suggesting people should do this.
Every case can only be dealt with as it is at the time.  My mum did an excellent job with limited resources.

Each to their own.

Your Mum did well.
I'll always try alternatives to using antibiotics. Ok, so the leech bite became sore and purple, I'm not one to be running off to the doctors at the drop of a hat, It may well catch up with me one  ;D
