Actually complained about an ad on the idiot box
« on: June 12, 2012, 07:49:56 AM »
Couldn't stop myself, over the last couple of years there have been several reports about tragedies occurring during bogged vehicle recoveries.

I was horrified dismayed to see the new Holden Colorado ad, the bloke casually throws a looped chain over the towball and proceeds with a snatch style recovery of a bogged vehicle. >:(

I would hope that my complaint directly to GM has some effect. I pointed out the facts and asked that they consider removing their ad and then reshoot it using safe recovery techniques.

If you feel strongly on this issue, please also make a formal complaint.

Stay safe

I thought I saw the same thing on an add recently but it was so brief I wasn't sure, and haven't seen the add again.  But good on you for being proactive.

Yep, saw the same thing on Saturday, was appalled and will be lodging a complaint too.
How could they even contemplate showing such a dangerous thing to the public.

Seriously, how would an ad agency know?

We only know because we are around them.  I saw a ad with the bloke crossing his arms as he steered - how dumbs that!

You would think by now with litigation they would run ads past industry before release.

Ok, maybe a dumb question, I reckon there is a fair potential for damage to either vehicles given the 'snatch' type recovery speed - but my understanding is that a chain won't recoil like a strap or winch wire. My theory is if anything failed it would fall to the ground fairly quickly without causing injury.....and, no I wasn't the driver  ;D

Comments on chain breaking under load?

When you see a chain snap while trying that type of recovery , you don't want to be near it .Have seen first hand the damage it can do to machinery and person's.

Sorry to add a touch of fairness, but the bloke doesn't "casually throw a looped chain over the towball"; the chain is already attached to the tow hitch the first time it's shown strung out, and it's distant enough to be unclear how it's attached.

I know underestimating public intelligence is the only safe option, but really, if we were to be requiring tv programming to show only what we should be doing, Top Gear would never have got off the ground; and that's been reasonably popular.

I saw same ad last night and will contact them today.I have also contacted Ultratune about their ad where they recover a car from the river using a tow strap around the tow ball,it must cause some dismay to those who have lost loved ones through this method of recovery.

I once saw some blokes pulling a 4wd (patrol I think >:D ) out of one of the big muddy ditches at landcruiser park with a snatchy over a tow ball. It went off like a gunshot, luckily straight over the top of the other car (rather than through it!) and thank goodness no one was standing behind the recovery vehicle. We were inspecting a best approach route for another track about 80-100m off to one side but we didn't realise what they'd hooked the snatchy over until we saw it snap, otherwise we would have stopped them.

Cheers!
Hefty.

I reckon the ad men though that big heavy chain looked super tough.   Much more macho than a whimpy bit of webbing.

The scary thing is I have seen this at the Cape. People snatching vehicles out like that.

My $2 worth I could not be bothered to waste the energy to complain. Next we will be complaining about everything we see that we think is wrong.

I complain on the basis that there are enough idiots doing stupid things and endangering other people, they should not be encouraged by witnessing dangerous behaviour on their bible and main form of education.

I disagree Hal H - towball loaded and ready to fire - deadly missile mate. Do some research on the deaths and injuries caused by this practise and you may change your stance - no fairness asked for, nor expected - it is just wrong.

Lost - what the hell was that number again and "come on, are you serious?" you must care a great deal to think of that number >:D

I did a recovery on the weekend and the bloke hooked his dental floss like ironman strap over the towball. I ripped it off and hooked it off to the hitch mount directly.....................second snatch and the strap broke.........rather that than the towball.

Then when another cruiser hooked up to my front tow mount he wanted to hook up over his towball................why don't people know better.............

I agree 100%
Not even worth all the attention its gotten on the forum really.
There are alot more dangerous/scary things on the television than this 30 second advert where most viewers dont even notice/care where the chain is hooked...

I think in the following snip you can CLEARLY see where it is attached ........ over the towball.

And the other end is looped over an open ended RHS box section bumper.  Just as life threatening from that end as well.

Aired again tonight.  How do you complain about this stupid, stupid behavior?  >:D

Silly Holden - people don't know enough about what is safe and what isn't for four wheel drive recoveries, let alone teaching them bad habits.
