Jayco camper question

I'm taking my Jayco Eagle on its maiden voyage tomorrow morning. I was thinking of giving my fridge a headstart overnight on 240volts with the roof down. Is this advisable or am I likely to set the canvas on fire.

Hi,

no your good, we always put ours on the day before. They seem to get a bit hot when on gas but the 240v is no problem with the roof down. Have a great trip

I always run the fridge on 240v a day before we head off. You need to do this every time as running on 12v when driving won't pull the temp down, it will only hold temp when its already cold.
Remember, when the roof is down, the bed is slid over the fridge vent and the canvas folds down over the mattress, so no worries there

We have wanted to try this too but I've been too scared to with it wound down. Do you have to plug the electrical cord plug thing in behind the sink to just run the fridge of 240v?
(probably a stupid question, I know)

That plug should be in all the time and not touched, then you should only have to switch it to 240 via the front of the fridge  :cheers:

I generally put the fridge on 2 days before we are going, just in case it doesn't cool down the first day.  I've been caught by the old "camper not level" trick!

Thanks lots for the advice. I feel better now knowing the fridge will be cool by the time we leave tomorrow morning and the camper will still be intact..

Really? But all the signs on camper say to unplug before winding down, and there is the big sign on the inside & outside of door to say turn lights off & unplug?

I crack the roof about an inch when I have the fridge on. Adding some frozen 2L water bottles will also help bring the temp down quicker.

Sorry i thought you were talking about the Power plug to the fridge.  No that plug your talking about does not need to be connected  :cheers:

Oh lol thanks! I didn't even know there was a plug for the fridge, well obviously there is but I haven't looked for it. Okay great so you just turn fridge to 240v and plug camper in to power?

Oh and one other thing, we don't have an amp fibian lead or converter or 15 amp plug so I spose next step is to get one of those?

Hey mate... so you don't swicth it to 12volt when you travel? I have mine on a few days on 240volt first up and then switch it to 12 volt at the start of our trip...

Oh please don't laugh at me but no! I've always been too scared. We bring our dometic 3 way as well and so I normally turn it on and have it keeping things cold before we go and on the way then normally turn camper fridge on when we get there, but it takes ages to get cold. I thi I need to invest in one of these leads...

I have a Goldstream and always run the fridge 2 days on mains before heading off.

I wind the camper up about 15 cm but this is mainly to allow access to the fridge to allow easier loading.

I can't recall,but does your Jayco have a vent in the benchtop? This could be obstructed by the canvas in the wound down position?

It is definitely a good idea to have your fridge cooled down before running on 12 volts.

Not going to laugh at you mate... Been doing this for years with my previous campers and never had an issue.... The only difference I have with my new Swan OB now is that I have an anderson plug that I use to charge the battery (from the pajero) on the move as it is running the fridge = quite safe....
