So to the people thinking that an unethical politician, or a disputed (by some) election means that our political system is f$%ed, wake up to yourselves. The shock jocks and deliberately divisive elements of the media would like everyone to believe that the country is going to hell in a hand basket (ratings), but the truth is we live in one of most stable and healthy democracies in the world. The whole debate over Craig Thompson is simply a sign that things are going well. If he's found guilty he should go to jail with the other thieves, no question (and maybe a couple of other squeaky clean HSU high ups as well).

The sad thing is that if we didn't have a minority government at the moment this wouldn't have even made the news.  These kinds of scandals happen all the time, if we had a majority government this would have been swept aside and the media would not have cared.

Just saying that I think that calling the whole democratic process into question over one d@%khead is over the top.

I don't recall anyone calling the whole democratic process into question.  ???

Labor themselves have hounded people out of office for less than what this grub has been up to. No "innocent until proven guilty" then. This germ justifies why I have refused to ever join a union, even when face to face and harassed by officials.

If this was in the hands of a previous Queensland ?? Government, they would just change the statute of limitations on crime a, and crime b so that they will be up a week before the finalization of any charges against a particular subject.

The above story is complete fiction and any resemblance to actual people or parties is purely by complete coincidence or accident.

Apparently A Current Affair paid an escort $60000 for her story on sleeping with him. I wish they would have come to me first!!! I would have confessed to anything with him too for that sort of money. Could have done some really cool mods to the camper with that moolah.

Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman.   http://usmilitary.about.com/od/punitivearticles/a/mcm133.htm

This should apply to pollies as well. I don't give a rats about having an eye witness.  His conduct is clearly unacceptable to be a representative of the people.  We need to pass something like this "Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman" for politicians. This SHOULD be a law.

---------------------------
“Any commissioned officer, cadet, or midshipman who is convicted of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”

Elements.

(1) That the accused did or omitted to do certain acts; and

(2) That, under the circumstances, these acts or omissions constituted conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman.

Explanation.

(1) Gentleman. As used in this article, “gentleman” includes both male and female commissioned officers, cadets, and midshipmen.

(2) Nature of offense. Conduct violative of this article is action or behavior in an official capacity which, in dishonoring or disgracing the person as an officer, seriously compromises the officer’s character as a gentleman, or action or behavior in an unofficial or private capacity which, in dishonoring or disgracing the officer personally, seriously compromises the person’s standing as an officer. There are certain moral attributes common to the ideal officer and the perfect gentleman, a lack of which is indicated by acts of dishonesty, unfair dealing, indecency, indecorum, lawlessness, injustice, or cruelty. Not everyone is or can be expected to meet unrealistically high moral standards, but there is a limit of tolerance based on customs of the service and military necessity below which the personal standards of an officer, cadet, or midshipman cannot fall without seriously compromising the person’s standing as an officer, cadet, or midshipman or the person’s character as a gentleman. This article prohibits conduct by a commissioned officer, cadet or midshipman which, taking all the circumstances into consideration, is thus compromising. This article includes acts made punishable by any other article, provided these acts amount to conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman. Thus, a commissioned officer who steals property violates both this article and Article 121. Whenever the offense charged is the same as a specific offense set forth in this Manual, the elements of proof are the same as those set forth in the paragraph which treats that specific offense, with the additional requirement that the act or omission constitutes conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman.

(3) Examples of offenses. Instances of violation of this article include knowingly making a false official statement; dishonorable failure to pay a debt; cheating on an exam; opening and reading a letter of another without authority; using insulting or defamatory language to another officer in that officer’s presence or about that officer to other military persons; being drunk and disorderly in a public place; public association with known prostitutes; committing or attempting to commit a crime involving moral turpitude; and failing without good cause to support the officer’s family.

Lesser included offense.

Article 80—attempts

Maximum punishment .

Dismissal, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and confinement for a period not in excess of that authorized for the most analogous (similar) offense for which a punishment is prescribed in this Manual, or, if none is prescribed, for 1 year.

Despite the picture posted above, I believe the guy has the right to the presumption of innocence and the right to a trial. I find it difficult but not impossible to believe his version of events but it is not up to the Federal Opposition, or us to convict him with out a trial.

Fair work is like the local council that wants to sell you home from under you because they claim you've not paid your rates for years.

The council has to prove this in a court. You get a chance to provide a defence, and then a judge or magistrate actually decides your fate. Not the frothing council debt collector who might see a juicy financial gain in dispossessing you of your home.

TOPNDR, Would you let him marry your daughter?

I agree with you that all of these 'departments/councils' are as dodgy as each other.  I just hate to see a thief walk free. Even if he did not spend all that money, we know the money went missing. And what did he do about it?

It's just a shame that honest folk get ripped off in all of this.

G'day schmik,

No I wouldn't want my daughter to marry what I think he is.  BUT and it's a BIG BUT, I wouldn't make a decision on that until I knew him.

AND with regards to the current furore, at present there are only allegations.  Not until he's charged with an offence and found guilty, will there be any certainty for the multitudes hanging and quartering him.

It's a bit like the war in Iraq. So many were in agreement because the pollies of the day, and the media of the day, and much of the populace of the day, all took at face value the claims, never justified before or after, that Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

The world, and Iraqis particularly, have paid an enormous price, in lost life, buggered lives, and financially, because too many were ready to charge in without ANY PROOF, or ANY TRIAL.

In theory I agree about the trial and innocence.... but in in real life???

I am not sure that the people running the investigation or the judges or fair work australia etc etc are impartial.
Unfortunately the judges, the police force, etc are all funded by the public purse provided by the GOV'T of which he is a part.

He is alleged to shave acted in a way that is 'above the law' and he very well may be above the law.

I am not sure that the people running the investigation or the judges or fair work australia etc etc are impartial.

And the people calling for his hanging and quartering are impartial?

Let's change the name of the alleged perpetrator to schmik. Would you still agree to being found guilty. Or believing yourself to be innocent, would you expect a chance to prove it?

IMHO one can't agree in theory about the right to a trial and the presumption of innocence, and then deny it to someone with NO ESTABLISHED OR PROVEN FACTS, just allegations.

The people calling for him to see justice are probably more impartial than the people who aren't going to deliver JACK SQUAT.

This 'good' ladies story, $60,000 or not, means nothing.
He is quite entitled to visit her as he pleases.
How he pays for it is another matter altogether.
I cannot see her having evidence of the credit card transaction, etc.

What I find more abhorrent than anything is the fact that the ALP must have had some idea of the dodgy stuff happening with Mr. Thompson (and Peter Slipper), but for the sake of maintaining their position as the governing party, they sink to any depths to do so. The LNP only distanced themselves from Peter Slipper when it was convenient to do so, once they were in opposition. If the ALP were in opposition at the moment, I wonder how quickly this issue would have resolved itself?
