Samsung are about to release the Galaxy Tab 2 in competition of the Kindle fires and other cheaper tabs. The 7 inch will be about $250US.

There is a story going round thatthe Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 version will be delayed (withdrawn by Samsung) so they can upgrade the main processor. They may be replacing the processor with a quad core CPU unit which also has a quad GPU. It should fly.

I guess it will come with Ice Cream Sandwich which is reported to be very good.

Not sure how these ones from Aldi would go but it may be a cheap option until you sort out what you want.

cards, chess, tic tac toe, thats the way I entertained my self as a kid so that is the way my kids travel . Leave the electric computer dvd gizmo games at home . There is a game called eye spy it gives the kids an opportunity to take in the scenery as they travel if they start getting restless just adjust the rear view mirror and watch them attack each other , it is great parent entertainment . If they get loud just adjust the volume up on the stereo , if they get totally out of control pull over throw them out the car drive off until you see the tears then let them back in , and the rest of the trip you wont notice they're in the car.Every time the wife travels she feeds the kids lollies chips and cool drink,if the wife is not with us all the kids get is fruit and water and that makes a huge difference.

Our roof top console was the best money we ever spent.... If I purchased another vehicle that would be one of the first extras going back in.

All of these are available at the appstore/market, probably even I spy. Short (only just) of administering sedatives I'll use every tool at my disposal, how much would one of those limo privacy screens be?

With the release of the iPad 3, iPad 1's are really cheap and very versatile ie. movies, music, ebook reader, games & Internet

We bought a cheap 16gb and a decent case with adaptor to mount on rear of headrest...works a treat!

And good for adults when kids are asleep

I even recreated the old Spotto game , we played as kids .
Made my own list , and my son loved it .....
eg. blue ute , post office , emu , statue , number plates with the numbers all the same .... and so on ... about 100 items I think !

Also get them to study the map with you for the next day's drive , so they know what towns are coming up .

Hey UTE 701 (or anyone, for that matter), do you still have a copy of that 'spotto' list? I'm doing a trip in October and was thinking of doing something like that for our kids...

Thanks

Steve

I go with the iPod touch suggestion as well, especially for younger children. We have a variety of gadgets- iPad, iPods, portable DVD ($80 and gives a lot of entertainment value- also has some corny games on it), DS, laptop. Last time we did a big trip I made up 'car karaoke' by burning 'mixed tape' CDs from our iTunes playlists and printing all the words and putting them in a folder. obviously the driver can't read the words, but the passengers have lots of great singing competitions. We also play 'guess my animal' where the kids think of an animal and you ask yes/no questions until someone guesses correctly. Not as successful, but more humorous is 'guess my number' where someone thinks of a number and you guess (hint: limit 1-50).
Always planning my next adventure.

well, good news,
my daughter won a Kindle fire at the local library with an undersubscribed competition, the problem is, now we have it, it is an americian version, now with our (new) amazon account and lack of wi-fi, we use a broadband stick and dial up (that will make the crowds cringe....)
so my question is does anyone else have the same problem or lead me to a website that I can download android apps or books and then put them to the kindle via usb cable?

we don't use dvd's or ipods (or the kindle) for travelling at all, no point travelling if they are going to sit and look at a movie or read a book while travelling(besides the carsickness thing)

we are pretty happy with the kindle and it's quality/functions (reads pdf and jpeg files etc)
best of all it came at the right price, just be good to load a heap of books on it
