mud tyres for Prado 90 series

I'm trying to put muddies on my 90 series Prado, either BF Goodrich or Coopers. 265,70,16s are standard. All muddies are 265,75,16s which makes them 23mm oversize and illegal. 255,70,16s undersize and illegal. I have seen muddies on same model, so how do they get round this?

I don't think that going up one size in sidewall would make that much difference. And even if it did I don't think you'd have an issue.

You can increase tyre size, so of the 75 series Tyres are 23mm bigger that wouldn't be illegal.

Depends on what state you are in. In Qld more than 15mm over standard is illegal, or at least it was.
Many do not worry and chances of being caught are slim. More likely to come to grief with anal insurance inspector if you claim...

No disrespect to any on here but..have you seen the nose on one of those buggers...sniff out anything that is not spec and not declared...come with tape measure and callipers...

Hey PradoProud,

I assuming you're in QLD.

The miata.net tyre size calculator (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html) shows that a 265/70r16 has a diameter of 777.4mm. A 255/70r16 has a diameter of 763.4mm, 14mm smaller. QLD rules let you go 15mm larger, or 26mm smaller, so you'll be right with them.

Cooper do the STT in a 245/75r16 (http://www.coopertires.com.au/index.php?page=tyres&tyre_id=8), which is 773.9mm in diameter - basically the same size as your standard tyres.  If you could find a 255/75r16 tyre, that's only 11mm over your standard size, and would work.

You may have better luck finding odd sizes in non-mainstream brands. People on the PCOA forum have good luck with finding odd sizes from Maxxis, General Grabber, and other non-BFG/Cooper/etc brands.

Good luck - it can be tricky at times!

Good one Matto, that's what I was looking for. There was no way one size up was going to be illegal.

Good luck PradoProud, your truck will look taller, have more clearance, use more fuel and you'll be stoked.

The trouble with a 265/75x16 is the lack of clearance at the back of the front guard, the tread will rub on a metal seam at full lock
You can get a Bridgestone D694 in the right size numbers wise. It's not a mud tyre but they have a pretty deep tread and will serve well in most conditions
Somethnig else, Like Matto said - I saw some 265/70x16 retreads in a mud pattern on E-bay not sure how you feel about that but also saw some new mud 265/70x16's in there as well.
Another thought - you could try your luck for a mud fitment on a 17" rim like a 265/65 17 but that's extra $$ maybe don't go there

It's too bad we can't fit 15's on the things

I put 245/75R16 onto the wife's 90 series Prado and it worked fantastic.  As mentioned above they are basically the same size and there is a great range available.  I ended up putting the Goodyear Wrangler DuraTracs on it however I could've quite easily put any of the mainstream MTs on instead.

Thanks to all that replied, I have gone with Coopers STMax 245/75/16s. 1mm under my 265s and 20mm narrower, which I can live with. In fact I was out with my 4x4 club on Saturday and am more than happy with them. oh yes I am in Qld and I wasn't so much worried about the law as the Insurance Co, this way everyones happy and I feel comfortable on our trip up Cape york in June and the Simpson in September.   Cheers Pradoproud

Doing the Cape next year and looking for some muddies for my 90 series. I currently have Procomp AT and really happy. I would likt to get someting a bit more aggressive for the cape as I will be towing a Mountain Trail CT I hope. I will keep an eye out on this post.

Just to ask a silly question, I was reading an Overlander from the end of last year, and they had an article where a guy was running 33" tyres on his 150 SWB prado. There was no explanation as to how he did it?

Does anyone know how this would be possible or how it was done?
